You're forgetting the most important factor: That god awful voice. The music is pretty rockin and all but the vocals... ugh.

This album pretty much DEFINES alternative rock. If you were living in a hole during the 1990s and missed the entire movement, this album would be pretty much all you'd need to hear to understand exactly what "alternative rock" is and was.
Maybe Nirvana got the most hype, but Smashing Pumpkins are definitely the definitive American alt-rock band for me.

I actually think that the second disc is superior to the first in some ways---like, it has all the songs that bore you first time round, but you come to love them if you give them a chance.
Especially Bodies, X.Y.U, Thru The Eyes... most of em'.

I think the second disc is put together very well as is the first.
On a first listen I could pick out a lot of filler, but since I've listened to it more times then I would remember the only track I wound label filler is Cupid De Locke. Album still deserves a 5
