A 3.5???!?
Stingy

somehow a 4.9 seems stingier than a 3.5, why the withheld 0.1?
though I kinda agree, as fantastic as this is, I wish there was a bit more experimentation a la Challenge or Leaves

4.9 is the most generous rating there is tbh — it's the highest praise possible for something that doesn't have the personal attachment to stick as a 5
and this is the perfect balance of no nonsense punk bangers and moody battery acid bs, absolutely no further experimentation needed. Future of What fills that niche for noisy Unwound anyway

Well said, there are quite a few 5s that are more 4.6-4.9s for me

i can dig that take, i wish users were given the ability to do 0.1 increments instead of the standard 0.5 ones, id have a lot less 5s then lol

"why the withheld 0.1?"
Johnny's comment (defending my stolen rating) aside: I slightly prefer Leaves, yet I'd take this over most any other album. I think my rating shows that.

i may be the lone one who thinks Challenge is their most fulfilling listen, then again im a relatively new fan
repetition probably has their highest highs though, stacked discography man

Challenge is easily one of their less satisfying to me, only rivalled by the s/t for their weakest. Takes a while to find its groove, largely underwhelming in its uptempo tracks and oddly airless prod-wise. It figures as a transitional effort into Leaves, but Future of What and (less so, as it generally get its due) Repetition deserve more rep as far as their experimental mid-career albs go

My problem with Challenge is that it (outside the s/t) has the weakest returns of any Unwound album. I like every song on it, more or less, but there's just something cluttered and annoying about the songwriting the rubs me a little more wrong every time I return. Data and Side Affects of Being Tired are two of my fav Unwound tracks tho

that makes sense, I personally think the second half of the record starting from Sonata is the best they ever did
future of what is probably my least favorite behind the self-titled, it’s still good but doesn’t capture my interest as much as the others, though I’ll keep listening

Challenge was up there with their best at one point for me, alongside Leaves even. I’m in agreement with the diminished returns to an extent tho. The prickly flow definitely became less enticing once the novelty wore off.
Repetition is my go-to Unwound jam (Leaves is tops but not an everyday sort of thing), I do love Future of What too.
This has kinda always been in that “still enjoyable but I cannot place what makes it so special” realm and that tide is now turning it seems. It doesn’t experiment as overtly perhaps but the quiet consistency here is paying off upon revisiting

You edgy bastard. A Fake Train shout (currently 6th for me but I need to revisit). s/t is definitely last

painful contrarian take that tec has been trying so hard for so long to die over that we should just put him out of his misery at this point
can vaguely fathom it coming from someone who a) does not actively listen to this band and b) has conveniently forgotten that the second half of that album exists
ngl the data supports both claims https://www.last.fm/user/tectactoe/library/music/Unwound/Fake+Train?date_preset=ALL

Confused at the notion that one side of an album being definitely better than the other somehow precludes that album from being someone’s favorite lol v weird take. Three full listens is more than enough to cement this as Unwound’s best for me - again sorry i don’t meet your arbitrary listening criteria to have a valid opinion. I will do better next time, senpai.
