I remember loving this album when it released. Once my brother pointed out how bad the drumming was it practically ruined this album for me. The first song especially has the same sloppy drum roll over and over. Heard the drummer got better over time, though, so that's good.

I remember going on forums back when the album released, and people were talking about the drummer being bad. There were articles written about it, etc. I think the band even addressed it publicly at some point. It was pretty well known that he was regarded as a bad drummer. But I don't listen to Pelican much anymore, so I don't know how much he improved over time.

From a 2010 Metalsucks interview with the drummer himself "Larry Herweg’s role in Pelican is arguably its most distinctive and most controversial. Some say his on-par-with-AC/DC beats allow the winding guitar lines to breathe; others argue that his drumming is sub-par and holds the band back from greatness."

I had a friend that sued the police, then a talk show host got wind of if and called my friend a 'pelican' on air, so he reached out and got an on-air apology. Ray Hadley is a piece of garbage and i'm glad my friend got 150k out of the lawsuit. More people should purseue suing the police if they feel they have been mistreated, it's a bit of mental anguish but you can get serious bank

Also Pelicans are gracious, lofty and beaufiful and to be called a Pelican should be a term of endearment

that’s the thing, this is a riff band. same people talking shit back then didn’t know how to doom metal. I was on those same forums as a jit. the slowdowns on time and meter as if they got randomly hit with molasses were done on purpose here cuz that was their style

Saying the drummer is bad here is like saying the lettuce is bad in your hamburger haha

yeah, never got the bad drummer thing lol like, his drumming is not the point lol I think he could push his playing a bit more even within the confines of the genre, but that's not the main attraction here
