A 3? Although the review was excellent, I find this album a beast.

And...I love the Drapery Falls :upset:

A glance at the river of drool stuck to the responses to Blackwater Park, the band’s magnum opeth,

I believe you mean "opus," but I'm not sure. Is opeth even a word?

You got guts to give this a 3, Ill give you that. I can see where youre coming from when you mention some songs boring you to tears, but I find such beauty in it.

Great job on the review. You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I have to say though, Damnation and Still Life are so much better than this.

Is opeth even a word?

No, it was taken from a book. The word in the book, opet, meant 'city on the moon'. They just added an h on it. I don't know the book or the author, but its in their website I think.
yup.

how low can we go with album? Can I get a rating of 2 for a review? anyone?
I'm on it kthx.

The Leper Affinity is the only thing that doesn't suck hardcore balls here. The acoustic tracks are like Protest the Hero acoustic section cheesy.

Finally a slightly negative review I like this but it isn't even close to Still Life.

Not a bad review but your use of commas almost makes the review fell choppy. Thats just a grammatical nit-pick.

Even though this is one of my favourite albums of all time, you back your opinion up well when you say that this album can be boring. I feel the tracks on this album are so well thought out, especially the heavy/ soft elements, that I can see why it would go over someone's head like yours.....................just kidding! Nice to see a different perspective on this 'Grandiose' of an album.

Haha, yeah, i know about the commas thing. Its just that i love writing in a 'speakerly' fashion, as if someone were talking the review, rather than 'writing/reading' it. That my only problem with this review of mine, that i didnt quite achieve that. I got my point across i think, but im still not a fan of the way i did it. My voice here is still too passive, not aggressive enough. Hah, sorry, i just get a bit uppity about style.

Sounds to me like you didn't give this album its full chance. Opeth isn't something you can pick up and immediately enjoy, even if you're a seasoned metal listener. I've listened to metal for over 10 years now, and even in the midst of all of that, I found Opeth initially boring, in the exact same way you did. The Leper Affinity was incredible but the rest fell short.

It took me months, possibly years before I truly began to see Opeth for the art they craft. I spent many, many nights falling asleep with headphones on, listening to Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries. Beyond the exterior impressions you get from The Leper Affinity, every single song here is loaded with amazing instrumental layers that come together to form some unbelievable atmospheres and soundscapes.

It takes effort to really enjoy Opeth to the fullest, but if you haven't been listening to them very long or thoroughly, it's no surprise you don't care for them near as much as everyone else seems to. Opeth takes some real effort and interest to uncover what makes them so special, and in my experience, few have really given them the close attention they deserve with each album.

Hm, yea i guess, but thats the thing. Its not like i didn't give this a genuine try. My last review must have been about 3 months ago, and throughout that time the only album i seriously listened to with the intent of reviewing was this album (I lie, Radiohead's Kid A is on this list too). And no matter how much i did listen to it (its at the top of my last.fm list), the more i listened to it the more i was convinced that i really didn't like this album. It got to the point where i simply couldn't get through the entire thing without stopping it at some point. Not saying you're wrong, just relating my experience with this album.

Opeth didn't take forever to grow on me. I was instantly hooked. A couple of people gave this a 2, so there's no reason to be bummed out from this review. This Message Edited On 06.30.07

Yeah, its not like Opeth is some super genre-bender or some crazy avant-garde stuff. They simply go from one extreme (death metal) to the other (acoustic sections). Good review, never saw the big deal of Opeth, though Still Life does have some pretty kickin' stuff.
