Yeah these dudes get better with age imo

Divine Wings is far and wide their best imo. I remember being like 16 years old and being blown away by it. Deep in the midst of the obligatory DT & SX phase.

Divine Wings of Tragedy takes the cake for me, but this is a close second.

The Odyssey upped the ante for SX's sound and this one continues the great run of albums. This band pushes all the right buttons for me, another 5-star effort.

Top 5 power-prog right here

This is so insanely heavy for prog/power metal.

Different bands trying to accomplish different things really. DT in their prime had the wankery down to a science and individually were all elite musicians. Symphony X were always better songwriters though.

Last 3 SX albums are godly

This is definitely the heaviest album they made before delving too far into the direction heaviness > progression witnessed in Iconoclast. Cool moments there but not nearly as memorable.
Blind Guardian could/can get pretty heavy too in the realm of power metal.

Yeah, like Somewhere Far Byond and Imaginations from the Other Side are pretty heavy for power metal.
There are some great soft moments in Paradise Lost like the title track, one of their best ballads. I think the guitar solo on Serpent's Kiss is probably my favorite solo that is just pure unashamed shredding lol

I think Kevin Moore and then Derek's departure definitely hurt DT in the songwriting dept. They still had some good albums after, but delved way too much into self indulgence

still one of my all time favorites
only knock on it is that the solos don’t have a lot of character

Michael Romeo can do almost no wrong in my eyes. Amazing guitarist. I remember thinking "The Sacrifice" solo on here being dope.
|

Yeah he's beyond human, no idea how the fuck he does it and he hardly even looks at the fretboard half the time. And to boot, he can write some amazing riffs. He ain't just a soloist

Agreed so hard. Michael Romeo and Jeff Loomis are the 2 metal guitarists that to me stand above the rest. Just unbelievably creative, skilled, and overall incomprehensibly good.
