this album is one of those masterpieces of which my favorite song kept on changing periodically... I guess most songs of the album have had that distinction for me at some point. Elusive cure, hands of reason and Jaded are possibly the only exceptions. Really saying a lot about the consistent awesomeness of it!

how close is it actually though? this is one of the best records of all time imo. no album can make this one feel lesser than. I do believe Obsidian is as good as a post DT PL record can get, but this right here is the real deal. Icon's amazing too but it doesn't come close as a whole. that being said we need a review that appreciates the magnitude of this shit

Yeah there are some really great songs on it like Forever Failure. But what holds this album back for me is the poppy song structures. Too many choruses, even in most of the 3 minute songs.
I like Faith Divides Us much more. That album isn't perfect in that departure, but it's a bit more my taste. I really don't understand the average for this album here.
Also today I checked out The Angel & The Dark River by My Dying Bride for the first time. Came out the same year as DT. Songwriting is much better, doesn't even need recurring choruses, it's more about the atmosphere and much slower. Well I think DT isn't even in the same genre, more like gothic metal, with not much doom left.
To be fair, I think Paradise Lost was always much easier accessible than other gothic doom bands.
