This is a pretty great collection. I prefer disc two over disc one, though. "Big Decision" and "Whatever" are two standouts.

Smith's melodies and lyrics reveal their greater strength and substance with repeated listens. And make no mistake, the songs do require repeated listens — not just because of Smith's often whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery, but also because of his deceptively angular melodies and chord progressions, which threaten to float away until the listener hears them enough to latch on and know where they're going.

the main reason i didnt like either/or was i could barely hear his voice and thats a huge deal to me...maybe it was to copy i heard was messed up but i prefer to hear the vocals. im sure in a few more listens ill come to enjoy his music

every single song on here is great, but i think it suffers from the fact that so much is being thrown at you at once it all sort of blends together.
24 songs of elliott smith gold, but listen to any 24 songs of elliott smith and they all begin to sound the same.

That's the problem with Elliott Smith. I heard Either/Or and loved it, then went out and bought s/t and the debut, but now I sort of feel satiated with his stuff. At first I thought I'd be buying his entire discography more or less at once, but now I don't really feel urged to check anything else out.

His later stuff is more distinguishable but this early stuff is so great, but at the same time repetitive.

Either/Or is a great album and this sounds good, so I'll probably buy it/borrow it from a friend.

every single one of his albums definately has a different feel to it. its so easy to sense his progression as an artist.

Nice review. Elliott Smith is my favorite artist that I've found out this year (a bit late, but whatever), and he keeps growing on me more by the minute.

probably my favorite album at the moment, talking to mary is sublime. the only real problem is it gets rather same-y after so long, but an excellent collection regardless, with multiple standouts.
also, high times as the single/promoted song? wtf....

a long and sprawling album/compilation, i found it suffered a lot from inconsistancy, upon one listen the melody's tend to drift from hook to hook at which point by the end of the album i'm unsure of what just happened. But it's not the individual tracks that really make this album special (although high times and the replacements soundalike all cleaned out do stand out as favourates) but rather the atmosphere that Elliott Smith conjures up. One of haunting lonliness, a stark beauty he finds in a reduced use of instrumentation and barely anything but his brilliantly expressive voice. It's rather like observing a rolling landscape and appreciating it's expansiveness, the sheer beauty. If anything this album makes me eager to delve into Smith's past catalogue.
