Well I’m going year by year right now so instead of comparing with just the band’s own discog you get to compare with their peers that year - it’s working
I think

Currently deep diving 1990 - but actually I didn’t know 1990 too well so it’s not needing to be too deep a dive so far
The last year of the nineties I’ve got left after that is 1999...then I’m spreading out into the late ‘80s and early ‘00s
Finding some absolute classics...and skipping a lot of pointless 2018 releases

I've only heard around 50 releases from this year, regret over half of them, most of the rest (whilst decent) will probably be completely forgotten come 2019. You've got to keep plugging away at the older stuff, especially someone like me who knows (relative) jack s*** compared to some on here. I listened to a Moby album for the first time today, not exactly deep diving, haha.
Good work.

If I spent a few months focusing on 2018 I’d find maybe ten or so extra 4/5 quality albums
The same time looking through the nineties has resulted in more than ten 5/5 ratings.
That’s the difference and why I’ll continue to prioritise going deeper into old releases for at least a couple more years :D

Maybe this is an over simplification & probably not relevant to you & your 'deep diving' but it's logical that a release that's say 20-25 years old (as you cited the 90s) that STILL has a fan-base & recognition, even if that recognition is relatively small/niche/underground (vs mainstream) then it gets a few extra points for successfully standing the test of time.
There are so many albums people highlight as 'must hear' that have only just been released & whilst it's nice getting caught up in the hype, the chances of me liking them AND want to keep returning in future years is actually absurdly slim. It can be fun at the time though, sure.

Which Moby album? His stuff varies stylistically a bunch

Well, some of the best stuff I’ve found has been out of print or close to forgotten...so I’m not sure. Sometimes stuff makes more sense many years later for whatever reasons, or sometimes there was an element of bad luck in something not reaching an audience.
I think trawling the nineties has been helped by the fact those were my teenage years, see how the eighties fare
Also I lived through the ‘00s as a music fan and I don’t rate that decade too highly - will I find enough interesting stuff by delving deeper? Maybe not. Might be a lot of effort

The stuff you can’t help but revisit is the real stuff, you usually know pretty quick it’s that standard

I should be doing the same tbh but new releases are just so tempting. Much great stuff as there is out there there's something exciting about discovering new stuff as it comes out. There's more FOMO involved with not checking new releases than old ones.

I try to balance new and old as best I can. There tend to be lulls in music releases or general down periods where not as much is happening, which is a great time to go back in time.

Even the poppy songs like Missed the Boat are hilariously cynical. The line ''We didn't need the water but we just BUILT THAT GOOD GOD DAMN'' always makes me lol.

This album (like every other MM release) is near perfect. 5/5, 10/10, my favorite album.
Edit: forgot to add, this album is severely underrated.

This is way better than Good News and I listen to it more than Long Drive on the whole (though the highlights from that album are next level). MM albums are always a bit all over the place for better or for worse tbh

Second listen of this and it feels like it may end up being my least favorite MM album (although from what I’ve read/heard, StO will likely take that title after I hear it).
I dunno, the album just feels a bit overlong and same-y. Granted, it’s only two listens. Might take another listen or two before the songs take on their own unique sound and flavor. Could be a grower..
Spitting Venom is absolutely amazing though, and one of their best songs. So far, this is looking like a 3.5 for me, but that could possibly go up.
LCW 5
Long Drive 5
Building Something 4.5
TMAA 4 (been tempted to bump to a 4.5 lately — has really grown on me)
Good News 4
WWD 3.5

Yeah this one isn't that great. Good News is leaps and bounds ahead of it.

But if we include Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks, that’s in last and would be a 3. Night of the Sun is amazing, the opener is good and the rest is pretty forgettable.
I haven’t listened to Noone’s Next yet. I’m going chronologically so that one will be next

Egregious and erroneous
but they're both not all that amazing so it's more like comparing bruised peaches to spotty bananas
Yeah just put me at the top of the page, love it up here.
