Californian hard-rockers Van Halen continue their output of 1 record per year with their 3rd LP 'Women and Children First'. Their 1st album not to contain any cover versions, this is a more seriously themed release which dials down the partying nature that the quartet had emphasized in the past. Tellingly, experimentation with mood & song structure is prevalent here, with 2 tracks crossing the 5 minute barrier & greater use of acoustic guitars. The result is a solid album that is more an intriguing stepping stone than an outright classic in its own right. Recommended Tracks: Romeo Delight, Fools & And the Cradle Will Rock.
