Review Summary: Boggy Depot: Jerry Cantrell's first solo album during the end years of Alice In Chains. Cantrell uses very similair writing styles as Alice In Chains including the verry dissonant chords and harmonies. Although much more mellow than Alice In Chains, Cant

1- Dickeye- Strong opening song. Intro comes in soft and grows until guitars come in. When the guitars arrive, you cant help but bang your head and maybe whip out that imaginary guitar you play so well. Great Guitar riffs and vocals. 4.5/5

2- Cut You In- Song starts off with an odd/different sounding acoustic riff for a few measures until the bass and drums kick in. First reaction is "this is weird" until the chorus jumps out at you, knocking you off your seat. once again the result is an instant head banger. 5/5

3- My Song- Nice, more mellow song that, at different parts, swells and grows hard then backs down to mellow. A little of the dissonant harmonies we all know from Alice In Chains that some find intriguing and some find it annoying. 3/5

4- Settling Down- Nice piano riff playing with Jerry playing a beautiful guitar part. Chorus swells a little but backs down to the piano and nice guitar. Great vocals, and the solo is beautiful. 4/5

5- Breaks My Back- Well written guitar part, but vocals lack a little due to an interesting effect. Vocals do improve towards the end where the effect is dropped but only remains dropped for a sentence. Not a bad song, but not the best on the album by far. 2.5/5

6- Jesus Hands- The most Alice In Chains sounding song on the album. The intro and verse guitar reminds you of the song "Frogs" by Alice In Chains. The voicing is great showing off Cantrell’s Higher voice capabilities. Chorus explodes on you with a heavy guitar riff and strong vocals. 4/5

7- Devil By His Side- Cool guitar riffs and a clever melody. This song lacks motivation to keep listening to it as it becomes repetitive and drags on. Lacks a solo which is disappointing. 3/5

8- Keep The Light On- Starts with one snare pound and guitars drop in with a heavy drive. Voicing is great and matches the guitar very well. Another head-knocker to add to the list this cd has. Chorus is significantly lighter than the verses which displays quite well the meaning of the song. 4/5

9- Satisfy- Soft. Nice Guitars with somewhat of a phased-out guitar effect. Song Builds as it progress towards the Chorus and backs down again. Good vocals back with amazing guitaring. 3.5/5

10- Hurt A Long Time- Soft song that grows at the chorus but not by much. Beautiful song with great lyrics, nice guitar, and amazing vocals that all combine to captivate you and tells you its okay to push the repeat button for days. 5/5

11- Between- A softer, folk sounding song. Jerry Cantrell Captured the Country or Folk feel of the song very well while adding his own style and great guitars to the mix. another song worth the repeat button. 4/5

12- Cold Piece- The last song on the album. a different sounding song with cool guitars and vocals, but something feels missing to the song which you feel. Song tends to drag itself on for too long. Although it has these flaws, it still shows off Cantrell's guitaring. This song is a disappointing closing song. 2.5/5

Boggy Depot has a pretty wide variety of music. This album would appeal to many Alice In Chains fans and is often regarded as Alice In Chains' "Lost Album". It’s a must for all 90's enthusiasts. Great Album. 4/5

An excellent first step for Cantrell as a solo artist and a great table setter for the crushing Degr...

I suggest you write some kind of an introduction, rather than just jumping in to the songs themselves. Also, in your track descriptions try to move away from "the guitars sound like this", "the drums do this" and get into analysing how it compares to other songs on the album/in his catalogue, how well it works in establishing a theme and flows in context with the other songs, discuss what makes the lyrics great etc. When you say "beautiful lyrics" or "the vocals have an interesting effect", try to describe these things. Other than that you have some decent descriptions, just keep it up and look around the site for some ideas on how a review can be done.

I'm so glad I bought this. It has has plenty of variety from the sombre acoustics to the mellow electric melodies and some crunching hard rock riffs thrown in for good measure... I officially love Jerry Cantrell and I love this album!

I wasn't crazy about them when I first heard the song but it really adds to the mood. Alice In Chains is my favorite band but I'd much rather see Jerry do another solo album and tour. I'd kill to hear these songs live.
