i think desolation row is the best piece of songwriting ever, and it's quite funny too!

Yes, I received your letter yesterday

(About the time the doorknob broke)

When you asked how I was doing

Was that some kind of joke?

JWH is marginally better than Nashville - c'mon it has Frankie Lee and Judas Priest!

yeah, but if you're in the mood for some light country, it's as good as it's gonna get

Don’t put on any airs

When you’re down on Rue Morgue Avenue

They got some hungry women there

And they really make a mess outta you

it wouldn't get in my top 5, always found it overly long, inconsistent with a couple of insanely good cuts

dylan's always been good with closers; desolation row, sad-eyed lady, baby blue, buckets of rain, they're all great

nashville is underrated as hell and much better than JWH

consistent songwriting > overly portentous lyrical themes

I don't find anything pretentious about the song writing themes on JWH. And the song writing on Nashville isn't of a consistently high standard unlike on most of the albums that preceded it but it's still great musically with a few really great songs. Definitely prefer JWH due to the superior song writing but Nashville definitely has its charms.

and yeah Blonde on Blonde is really consistent for a double album and probably my second favourite Dylan overall, behind Blood on the Tracks.

mine goes:

1. this

2. blood on the tracks

3. blonde on blonde (was the first i heard)

4. bringin it all back home

5. the freewheelin Bob Dylan

then comes new morning, time out of mind, nashville, desire etc.

My top 5 would be:

Blood on the Tracks (clearly head and shoulders above the rest for me)
Blonde on Blonde
Bringing it All Back Home
this
John Wesley Harding or Desire
