Of course, even the most original patterns tend to fade with time, but I think YOB are playing it really nice atm. Not quite sure what the future will bring, though.
Well said Voivod. However, the statement above is the uncertainty I'm at now because they seem to already be there (songs drift off into nothing, at least that's how I feel). And trust me, I love drone/ sludge as much as the next guy here.

agreed that this is more along the lines of Catharsis than any of their other albums. I dig this a lot, but wouldn't put it towards the top of their discography (that is reserved for Elaborations of Carbon, The Unreal Never Lived and maybe even Atma)

I'll see these guys live along with Pallbearer on Friday. I feel really stoked.

still a fantastic album, but as far as 2014 sludge/stoner/doom goes this gets beat out by Thou, EHG, Electric Wizard and Indian. great year for that type of music though m/

yeah for sure, in the running for #1 for me. i've missed a lot of music over the last 4-5 weeks since i haven't been online at all really, so i have some catching up to do. anything particular i've missed in the realm of sludge/stoner/doom or death metal?

well, compared to you my knowledge of those genres is pretty plebeian, but I'll give this a shot
Sludge:
Conan - Blood Eagle
Generation of Vipers - Coffin Wisdom
Dirge - Hyperion
Irreversible - Surface
Earthmass - Earthmass
Alaskan - Despair, Erosion, Loss
Death:
Auroch - Taman Shud
I'm a fan of, if not gushing over, the new Ne Obliviscaris, but I'm not sure it's really your thing
not even gonna try harder with death since my taste therein is pretty much limited to Ulcerate. doom is a genre I'm
just now getting into, and I have a sum total of one stoner album on my itunes, so the only thing I can really rec with
any confidence is sludge. of those I listed, I'd especially look into Generation of Vipers, Dirge, and Alaskan.

Check out Black Moth - Condemned To Hope. It's a bit lighter, but still belongs to the stoner/doom genre. And it's excellent.

"YOB aren't reinventing the wheel nor are they even trying anymore. If you want to argue subtlety then talk about every album they've released before their comeback in 09. They're just doing their rounds; same old, same old"
agree 100% but they still do it better than lot of bands. no matter how safe this is, it's still executed well. 3.5-4 for me.
