I disagree too, I put this and 'Boxer' above 'High Violet', though I rate them all 5's. The dirge tone on HV just makes it the one of the three I reach for the least.

There's no way 'Alligator' is a perfect album, that's a transitionary album with some guts, but there's definitely some less impressive and/or clunky stuff on there.

Of that miraculous 5 album run, I'd go: TWFM > Boxer > High Violet as well. I generally think HV is a more consistent album, it feels more thematic/cohesive for whatever that's worth, and the difference in quality between its best song and its worst song is puny. Boxer has lower lows but significantly higher highs, with tracks like 'Brainy', 'Fake Empire', 'Slow Show', and 'Apartment Story' being among The National's very best and so high in my personal canon that I can easily forgive the very minor missteps like 'Squalor Victoria' and 'Racing Like a Pro'.

Now choosing the 4/5 spots between Alligator and SWB is tough. Not sure I can rifle off a quick answer without giving it a lot more thought.

I prefer Alligator to SWB, but it’s close. Alligator introduced me to the band, and it holds something special for me.

High Violet > Alligator > Boxer > this > Sleep Well Beast > Sad Songs > none of their other albums matter

Racing Like A Pro is arguably my least fave on Boxer (their best album).

Boxer > HV > TWFM > Alligator > SWB

for a moment I thought HV and this would progress to becoming my faves, in a ‘going through the years’ kind of way. Honestly, I put a lot of bloody time into trying to make this happen, so much so that it ended up feeling like I was forcing things. I’m content with the current state of play.

Agree 'Racing Like a Pro' is BOXER's weakest moment, a hair below 'Squalor Victoria' imo.

I just spent an hour trying to remember what kind of fucking chair Matt says in Pink Rabbits

I thought knitting or thinking or painting and it turns out fainting. I guess I was close.
