It always blows me away with how good this is, especially for a comeback album. Pretty much unheard of.

another amazing album by Dinosaur Jr.
wasn't expecting "I Got Lost", some Bon Iver vibes there

Revisiting the whole Dino discog this week and this is the best of the reunion albums - ‘Farm’ has the sound/power but this has consistency, variety and just simply the songs.
Both good but this one is better, third best Dino after You’re Living and Bug

Farm has the power though

songs and variety win - esp with this band where I'd say sameyness is the biggest enemy
'Farm' is 4th best though, no doubt
then for me 'Green Mind' still 5th although strangely 'Hand it Over' I tried for the first time this week and that was pretty good
I want to like the debut more but that I'm struggling with a little bit, lo-fi doesn't cover it

'Beyond' sounds like 10 years of Dino song ideas edited to make one album - usually they'd be spread over four releases. I like that it's more like 'Bug' and 'You're Living' as it has non noisy tracks, real indie schmindie stuff cos that's part of the Dino experience - 'Farm' is 'amplified all the way' and you miss a third of the band's personality I feel. You need 'We're Not Alone' and 'I Got Lost'. 'Crumble' is so good too.
'Farm' still has some ideas and the guitar playing is immense, 'Said the People' is one of their top 5 songs...but every album since has been 'Farm Revisited' to lesser returns

the closer on this is so fucking good

It's an album of immense songs throughout almost Tommy - I rate 'Bug' and 'You're Living' more highly because they had that early spirit...but I'd say this is their most consistent and most well thought out for variety and track flow.
'Lightning Bulb' is probably the weakest tune and even that's very decent for a Lou effort.
I really liked the J Mascis solo album 'More Light' so this album was like a refinement of that too.

This band is well overdue another proper try from me. I’ve heard YLAOM a few times and didn’t like it, wonder if this might be a better re-entry point for me... Thoughts Doof, knowing my taste?

this has some of the cleanest production and some of the more 'indie' 'mellow' songs are the best on it - could be the no.1 Boney Dino album I think
they are so Neil Young you will have a breakthrough
|

That sounds promising. I do think I’ve gotten more into scrappy/noisy/lo-fi indie in the few years since I listened to YLAOM so I might retry that first but sounds like this could be more my bag overall.

Your next steps after this one should be 'Bug' and (I know it might seem a weird choice) but 'More light' by J. Mascis.
Plus you have J's other recent twee mostly acoustic albums which are nice too.
