Review Summary: Tape in, turn on, freak out

Have you ever wondered what tunes the keyboard player from Foals likes to relax to? Did you know that they even HAVE a keyboard player? Are you willing to pay full RRP for what amounts to a compilation CD made by some bloke from Oxford? If the answer to any or all of these questions is “Yes” then by jove you’re in for a treat.

Ignore the sceptic. Despite a dodgy premise, Tapes is ultimately an appreciable effort. The album is, philosophically speaking, an ode to the largely obsolete art of mixtapes. With a wide variety of tracks culled from Foals’ record collection it can appeal on two levels; fans are keen to hear what makes the group tick, others might be drawn in by the opportunity to listen to new music.

The compilation is also suited to a particular mood. Records like this need a setting. Get some friends over, commit whatever sin you generally rack up and just go with it. By the time Dorian Concept’s “Tropical Hands” bounces out of your speakers like the music to the Streets Of Rage level they should have made, the party should already be in full flow. The Invisible’s “London Girl”, with its sleazy and mockingly derivative bass line, sets the bar higher still.

Alas, Tapes is hampered by unimaginative mixing and a serious lull in proceedings at the halfway point. The album’s smart start descends into an innocuous blend of low-rent soul-dance tracks and later on, more intense electronic noodling. Aside from an excellent double whammy supplied by In Flagranti and Carl Craig, a large part of the album passes by without incident. The record’s partial salvation is found toward the end. The shifting rhythms of Caribou’s “Sun” are followed by the funk-led preaching of “Yes God Is Real.”

Commercially it’s a turd, but at face value (and given the right surroundings) it can be a genuine curio; a digital flyer for their after-show DJ sets.

"Are you willing to pay full RRP for what amounts to a compilation CD made by some bloke from Oxford?"

This has always bothered me about these types of releases. Never fails to baffle me that they get so much attention.

Ugh, if I bothered to care enough, I think I would have issues with Foals' name being associated with this.

Confused as to why this is in the database to be honest. Doesn't really belong.

Why are you confused? It's a DJ mix they put out - I'm confused at your confusion

Also, mix is absolute garbage

It's barely a mix. More a playlist put through the trial version of Virtual DJ.

It's just that here we have an album from Foals which (a) does not include any music from the band, (b) was compiled by only one member and (c) serves absolutely no purpose at all.

Well whether you think it serves any purpose or not is irrelevant (not trying to be an ass here, but it's true). The reality is that it is a mix (however loose that term may be), that was officially released and is attributed to the group. I see no issue here

But the site doesn't allow singles in the database for what I assume are similar reasons to why I'm wondering this is on here. That's where the questioning comes from.

Though to finish this with a word: meh.

The site doesn't allow singles because they're singles - this is not (obviously). What are you confused about? That there's no material from Foals on here? There's plenty of additions to the database that don't actually contain material attributed to the artist in question, that's because they're mixes. Foals' name is on the cover, they picked the tracks and "mixed" them together, thus it falls under their band page. Simple really

But then singles include maybe a b-side or two and some remixes. But as I said before, I don't really care, it's just odd to vote on an album by an artist when their input is minimal at best. It's even further gone than attributing an entire compilation to only them when they may have only one track on it. Since there's a line in the equation already I'd have thought it covered this, too.

And now that I've realised what I've spent several comments discussing, I'm going outside...

I kinda doubt that people were taking into account how better Foals album may have been than this when they were deciding on what to rate it

Because they assembled it. You (and I for that matter) may scoff at their "DJ credentials" or whatever, but they're still an integral part of the process. And you're forgetting the even bigger thing: they released it!

Now, are you sure you don't care?

Nope (well, I don't think so)

If you're querying what I think you might be, I was referring to Total Life Together, their last album

It just didn't make sense when I was reading it.

Sucks this is a mix tape... I was hoping for a proper new album.

"Are you willing to pay full RRP for what amounts to a compilation CD made by some bloke from Oxford?"

I sampled most of the tracks and I'd say this sums it up nicely.
