ERRA Cure | 3.5 |
For sure their weakest overall record yet, which is not saying much, considering that ERRA is and always has been the spearhead of modern metalcore following the tried and true, cookie cutter formula of progressive riffs, breakdowns, growls and the obligatory clean chorus inbetween. Since 15 years they are basically doing the Killswitch Engage routine with better production, better technicality, and more hard-hitting emotional highs as well as bits of brutality. Their breakdowns are just heavier, as well as played more brainy - think Misery Signals (but not entirely on the level on the latter). Unfortunately though, all in all it's getting a bit stale by now. The formula has worn off. 2024's ERRA seem write songs as if they're on autopilot. As if the studio had said, we need a new album by tomorrow - get going guys! Which is a little sad because we as the listeners don't get banger hits like Snowblood, House of Glass, Breach, Skyline, Hybrid Earth, or White Noise anymore. Which is unfortunate, as I already said. Still worth your while though for sure, especially if you're into modern metalcore and just can't get enough from this particular muscial trope. |
The Ghost Inside Searching for Solace | 3.0 |
Masterpieces like Death Grip and Split as well as the interesting experiment of Cityscapes
shake hands with the most mainstream copy of Linkin Park I have ever heard by any metalcore
band ever, namely Wash It Away. If you close your eyes while listening to the latter,
Chester literally becomes alive again. I am not even fucking kidding. Why a VERY well-
respected and basically unhateable band in the genre (not only because of coming back from
their haunting and soul-crushingly sad past) does a shitty choice like this and basically
betrays their own hardcore slash metal roots so much that it's pure sellout is beyond me,
but that is something they will have to work out for themselves. Maybe they got pressured by
the label, maybe they just want more money aka broaden their fanbase with a crowbar, or
maybe they just want to play Rock im Park now, I don't know. But it's a choice I will have
to tolerate for now. There are still many redeeming qualities to find on Searching for
Solace and I will give them the benefit of a doubt. If their next album is another Fury and
the Fallen Ones, we can all grab a cold one again together. |
Northlane Mirror's Edge | 3.5 |
Interesting experiment that equally excels in what it wants to achieve as that it fails. While Miasma is laughably bad and I couldn't care less about Let Me Disappear, Kraft and Dante on the other end of the spectrum are straight up amazing. Afterimage is a track I very much enjoy and that flows exactly in the middle of these two poles for me. Therefore, I can enjoy this for what it is - a fun little collection of ideas, a musical brainfart of sorts, where not every idea has been fully developed before recording it. Now let's make another album and show us if you're capable of greatness again, my fellow Aussies. |
Eidola Eviscerate | 3.5 |
The low-growled screams aren't the best from a technical standpoint tbh and the progressiveness is once more a bit too much for their own good, but other than that, it's another solid entry by Eidola. Just not as amazing as all their previous records. |
Texas in July Without Reason | 3.0 |
Dunno what collins is on, but this is neither Dient nor Deathcore, omegalul. It's bread and butter-Metalcore, played absolutely by the numbers. A bit boring for Texas in July standards, but it's nice to have them back at the ring. |
Acres Burning Throne | 4.0 |
Amazing record. Mitch can suck a horse's cock and go back to listening to pretentious, soulless technical black metal for music students. Enjoying Acres actually needs a heart, not only a mind. Let this sink in and think about it, it will all make sense after two spins of their discography. |
Of Virtue Omen | 3.0 |
Basically a death sentence to their own identity. There is nothing left of their earth-shattering brutality as well as their creative songwriting back in the Heartsounds- and Salvation-days. As hinted on the terrible What Defines You already and cranking this sonical choice up to one hundred, Of Virtue has gone full sellout now. Mainstream to appeal to the masses. Poppy choruses wherever you look, way less growls, way less heavy riffing, way fewer breakdowns, no more progressiveness, softer production...the list goes on and on. What you have to give them credit for is two things though. Firstly, they are still capable of writing absolute bangers that never leave your ear, even weeks after the first listen. And secondly, at least they're consistent in their new style and follow it through to the very end. The entirety of Omen sounds so consistent, you can skip from song two to song seven and know immediately that this is the same record, which is a positive in my opinion. The producer did a good job to at least give their new self a coherent style. Therefore I am changing my rating from a 2 to a 3. They found their niche and people who enjoy this kind of music, for instance fans of new Of Mice and Men, Dayshell, and the like, will most probably very much dig this. |
Rivers of Nihil Where Owls Know My Name | 4.0 |
Justin Timberlake Everything I Thought It Was | 4.0 |
Leaving Man of the Woods in the dust, JT finally comes back to the heights of The 2020 Experience. A sexy, laid-back, and surprisingly self-aware record dealing with regret and mistakes regarding women. The oldest topic in the book, I know, but at least he shows some sense of repentance, which takes balls and is appreciated. He's still got the vocal chops of a generation and in the tracks where he isn't using autotune to pander to the modernity of the radio scene, he shows them big time. Kudos Justin, you crazy bastard - you turned it around. |

Static-X Project Regeneration Vol. 2 | 2.0 |
By far their worst work yet. Gives Cult of Static a run for it's money, truly. It's slow, boring, samey, uninspired, and just rehashes the worst parts of Wayne's legacy. They should have ended with Vol. 1! Please avoid this one at all costs. It's for your own good. And this is coming from a die hard Static X fan since their debut. |

the new version definitely sounds weaker than the old one because the new vocalist is too silent and tries to copy CJ way too much instead of just doing his own thing and making the record his own. overall a big letdown, especially considering the fact that these guys basically were at the forefront of the whole deathcore genre for 5+ years constantly. justice for CJ - looking forward to his new band now. |

It's becoming a bit stale at this point. The relatively weak cleans don't change the fact that you can only play so many double bass, stopped by tons of beatdown breakdowns. Maybe change up the formula more? Or go back to the sheer brutality of older records. Idk. Kiss from a Rose isn't the answer by the way, that much I can tell you for sure. You're not Aerosmith guys. |

Boring and uninspired. I can't help but think I've heard this record already back in 2008. Fortunately it's Unearth, so the musicianship is there and saves The Wretched The Ruinous from true mediocrity. Final question - what on god's good earth happened to Trevor Phipps? He sounds so weak and tired...my god. These lows are so high and shallow, they can't even be called low growls anymore. A ghost of his former self. |

My god. Six years for this? It's very, very tame. They're not rockers anymore, they're only stoners now. Chilling until their own end. Only providing the bare necessities. A huge disappointment. |

Very by the numbers. Also the vocal harmonies have been recycled big time from his debut
album. What not only keeps this new record afloat but makes it great are the amazing solos.

The new Emarosa is like a cupcake. You know you're sinning and eating tons of unhealthy sugar, but in the end it tastes sweet and good. The record is so consistently and catchily built around melody that it almost becomes cheesy. Musically, they move in the poppy waters of Michael Jackson meets Modern Talking. But you know what? It works. And it tastes good. For hits like Again or Rush alone, it's worth listening to. Just don't get turned off by the 80s flair that immediately presents itself. Have fun listening. |

Boring af, good if you're sleepy. I know all musicians here are legends, know their instruments full well, and wanted to craft something epic here, but in doing so, they bit off a bit more than they could chew. I Prevail TRUE POWER | 1.5 |
The production screams loudness war more than your neighbors while you blast Slayer at full volume, the rap parts are laughable, the clean singer still sings with his nose held shut, the lyrics are still cringe as fuck, and the songwriting is still as uninspired as ever. This is cookie cutter popcorn Metalcore for people that have absolutely no clue about the genre. My god. That this band still exists is beyond me. Another proof that the masses are stupid and have no taste. |
Malevolence Malicious Intent | 2.5 |
After hearing Malicious Intent and especially Life Sentence I thought to myself, my god, this album slaps. The speed was way higher than expected and I had good fun with this bro-core style of writing. But then came pregnant with meaning midtempo garbage like On Broken Glass and Still Waters Run Deep which sounded like the worst Avenged Sevenfold-songs ever made, so they lost me right there. Higher Place then felt completely out of place - putting a Disturbed-ballad on a record might work for Disturbed, but not for self-declared roughnecks and whiskey-blasting pussy destroyers Malevolence. Neither Matt (Honeycott nor Heafy) could safe this mess. Sad one, the album had promise. |

Fit for a King The Hell We Create | 3.5 |
Eyes Roll Back may very well be the hardest track they have ever released, even heavier than the stuff from their debut LP. An amazing listen. 10 out of 5 for me. Unfortunately, the rest of the album falls a bit flat and follows the same clean-laden formula that hold The Path back, too. There are some single sparks of greatness here and there, yes, but overall it's classic FFAK going soft. I hope the next record sounds more like Dark Skies again. Still give it a spin if you're into cookie cutter Metalcore. |

Pros - great technicality all-around, very versatile vocals, sick solos, some good songwriting ideas, sporadic bombast-feel of certain tracks. Cons - way too long, bad production, songs get samey after repeated listens, synths are overdone and annoying as hell, slightly uninspired breakdowns that seem to follow the same formula over and over. If you want better Death in your Deathcore but remain as technical, maybe give Brand of Sacrifice or Archspire a go. If you want better Core in your Deathcore and tone the instrumental wankery down a notch, try Thy Art Is Murder. All three are slightly better imho and just make music that is more consistent. Lorna Shore want too much at once here for my taste. That being said, Pain Remains is not a bad record by any means. I've just head better Deathcore albums during my lifetime. |

I mean, let's be real here. Lost Cause is probably one of the best Metalcore songs ever

The Answer and Track 10 are fine, you can take or leave them. But the five interludes are
just a bit much for a record running only 34 minutes in total, granted. Therefore, it should
better have been a 7-track-EP, then it would be a 4.5. Now it's just a 3.5 to 4. A bit sad
they didn't show us more regular tracks, because Deja Vu could have been an AOTY
contender... |

The Hirsch Effekt Kollaps | 3.0 |
Their most easily accessible, but unfortunately
also their weakest album yet imho. The short
runtimes really hurt the creative possibilities
of the songs, most math-heavy prog is gone, and
the tonalities are all over the place as well.
There is no clear focus, no greater idea, while
electronics go hand-in-hand with Nu Metal- and
even Djent-ingratiations. Of course there are
occasional bright spots as well, like for
instance the ending of AGERA, the epic buildup of
TORKA, or the
grandiose title track KOLLAPS overall - but
firstly, this is a Hirsch Effekt record after
all, so did you really expect a complete failure
guys - and secondly, these are also three of the
only long tracks of the album. This speaks to the
theory that THE simply need longer songs to fully
shine. Anyway. It's a letdown considering their
amazing discography, but it's still better than
most contemporary German progressive post-
hardcore. Curious to see them live this year and
check out their energy iRL. |

I love Minus the Bear, it's my favourite band of all time. I have most their albums and EP's
at a "5". I even like the first recordings of Jake's first band, State Route 522. This album
here however, was kind of a weak effort to me. It is very long and drawn-out, songs become
boring and repetitive quite quickly, the singing isn't nearly as prominently featured as in
Minus the Bear, and especially the samples threw me off completely. Listening to random
laughing skits from an unknown female midway into a ten minute instrumental epic isn't
exactly what I am looking for when wanting to chill and wanting to enjoy some Jake magic.
So, all in all, this was dead on arrival. Unfortunately. I'd rather listen to State Route
522 on repeat and miss out on Jake's vocals then revisit this pretentious
snoozefest again, I am sorry. 2.5 points for the musicianship. |

Sad that the production is so bad and mushy. Also some songs are a bit samey. In the end its a great record though and another stable from Like Moths to Flames, which rarely disappoint if you are looking for some standard formula-Metalcore. |

The amazing features (Jason Butler, Caleb Shlomo, Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker) as well as great sonic experiments like in Darkness Bleeds FOTF, Cathedral Bell, Gravity's Rainbow, or Clean Cut Heals keep it from being your run-of-the-mill-The Used record of late. It's mainstream now, sure, but definitely better than average and although featuring 16 tracks not that overly long as everyone says (46mins is totally fine imho). If you would insist, I could agree to cut some filler songs or stuff that didn't work like Paradise Lost, Big Wanna Be, My Cocoon, and Wow I Hate This Song(sic!). |

After the Burial Evergreen | 3.0 |
Their weakest effort yet. Some songs are just plain annoying like the samey 'Behold The Crown' or the one-note Djentfest 'To Challenge Existence' and others are just neither catchy nor impressive (2, 3, 5, 6). It's bland metalcore with weak vocals galore. The only good songs are the pulsing 'The Great Repeat', the pounding closer 'A Pulse Exchanged' and - ironically - the instrumental interlude 'In Flux'. What a shame. After The Burial continue their downwards trend after all the member changes. |

Anthony Green Would You Still Be In Love | 3.5 |

The Parallel (CAN) Weaver | 3.5 |
at parts extremely great, at parts a bit over-ambitious. they want too much at once. modern, proggy tech metalcore cousins Northlane, Invent Animate, Erra and the like...but also deathcore tunes like in Brand of Sacrifice or Chelsea Grin are prevalent here. even electronic bits can be found. it's just too much for a debut, it's not consistent. all this variation keeps it from true greatness. don't get me wrong: it's a good record and the drummer is an absolute beast - but give this band one or two more albums and we have 4.5+ potential right here. |

Great when they use their ambient and epic background sounds (Punish the Poor, Standstill, Benevolent Warfare). The rest is standard deathcore. |
Chelsea Grin Eternal Nightmare | 2.5 |
It's fine but nothing more...Tom should have stayed at Lorna Shore. Imho it's their second worst album after My Damnation. Even their last record had more things to enjoy because of better singles and overall the better breakdowns. This is more death metal than deathcore at times, which is not where Chelsea Grin can shine. They were great when they added in melody like in Evolve and Ashes to Ashes OR without melody via pure breakdown-fests like in Desolation of Eden, their selftitled EP or Self Inflicted. Eternal Nightmare is neither here nor there. It's half-assed, boring, samey and just features the occasional tad of greatness, which is simply not enough. The production is good though and Tom mostly shines. That's about it. Solid, but you're better off with their other CDs. 2.75 or smth out of sympathy. |

Overproduced, compression rate: over 9000, autotuned at parts/oftentimes heavily layered vocals, singing is not on par with legends of the genre (like the 'similar bands' would like us to believe), etc...just too much to hate here. But at least the songwriting is great and truly innovative to be honest. So it's better than the critical mass of the genre, sure, but only barely. They need a new producer asap imo. |

My god. "Grow" might easily be one of the best songs of 2016. And "Stay Close" is also wonderful. Sad to hear that the vocal track of "Stay Please" is mixed so low...could have been 4.5-material. Anyway, new stuff from Kurt is always good. Hoping for Everything is Beautiful pt.2 someday! |

sadly but certainly my least favourite DGD LP so far. it's not bad by any means, but they rsimply wanted too much at once with this one. completely random, loony tracks that don't rfit like young robot, flossie dickey bounce(!) or petting zoo justice; mellow tilian rsoloartist-songs like here comes the winner(!) or exposed; balladesque songs like man of rthe year; or stadium-singalong-baits like frozen one/chocolate jackalope. god damn. if it rweren't for good old DGD epicness like in chucky..., deception, philosopher king or rinspire the liars, I would think this is just a hasty output, rushed by studio bosses in rthe background. - next time more time will! make us wait and make it worth the wait. |

what fool have I been, tricking myself into thinking that other soundoffs could speak the
truth about certain pieces of music and that this particular cd could actually be good. man.
it isn't. it is merely a boring piece of standard metalcore with some rapping on it. yeah,
the MC does sound a little bit like mike shinoda - so what? this linkin park reference of
yours is just a distraction from the reality: that most of you haven't listened to classic
LP in a really long time; because hybrid theory, meteora & co eat this dangerkids record
alive and with ease. furthermore, I have heard at least fourty modern metalcore/post-
hardcore albums in the last two years that are far superior to this bland, boring, generic
and uncatchy dangerkids-mess. my goodness. just listen to our last night, memphis may fire,
palisades, dream on dreamer, issues, old woe is me etc etc. it's all the same, but better.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
now please get back on track and listen to "the real", good old linkin park again or at
least stop bothering with sub-par modern post-hardcore/metalcore mixes that can't keep up in
this already crowded genre. |

2014 - 'the year without good deathcore releases' is no more. No Hope No Morality marks the first bearable effort, even if it is just a decent rip-off of some old Suicide Silence and Chelsea Grin material. Tl;dr: fuck me, it's still enjoyable. DEMONS IN THE MIST brings the pain. |

Aside from the closer, this is by far the most boring Deathcore record I have heard in the last 5+ years. If somebody really thinks this is any good, I would give him the well-meant advice to stop listening to bullshit and to try out really outstanding deathcore CDs instead, like for instance Thy Art Is Murder's "Hate", Whitechapel's selftitled, Fit For An Autopsy's "The Process of Human Extermination" or the last three Impending Doom albums. And no, this is by no means generic Carnifex-hate, I used to enjoy these guys back then and have been following the whole genre since it's formation. |

We Are The In Crowd Weird Kids | 3.0 |
After a somewhat slow and mediocre start (1-4), Weird Kids manages to deliver a really solid middle part (5-7) and finishes with a decent but not overly convincing ending section (9-10). All in all, this is neither 'must have' nor 'shit', which leaves We Are The In Crowd's newest CD plainly in the forgettable/skippable-segment, just slightly above the average Pop Punk these days. Ps. Yes - there is slight progression - but it simply isn't enough to reach the finish line this time. |

I really don't understand all the hate that this album gets. "Room To Breathe" is arguably the best song YMA6 has ever done and features an astonishingly great Dead Letter Circus-vibe. Also "Win Some, Lose Some" is an excellent track plus "Wild Ones" marks the best closer in a long, long while. Then we have tracks 1, 4, 7, 8, 9 who are just hella fun and bring spring right into your minds....idk. Ultimately there is just so little filler material (10, 11) that I would strongly recommend you to give Cavalier Youth another spin or two. Blend out the name(s) and reputation, just for once. |

siding with thomas sanborn. "murder mitten", "we're not in kansas anymore" and "judith rules" are the best tracks on this record. it's easy to tell why: all cheesiness/catchiness aside, they have ambitious dubstep parts that technically outsmart the simple looped electro beats and samples on all the other tracks. you have to have your brain available to get this though, so some ppl might be out for this one. their best record to date. 3.75 |

Korn The Paradigm Shift | 2.5 |
***damn guys, calm down. Yes, Untitled was horrible and yes, The Path of Totality totally lay out of their comfort zone, but: See You On The Other Side definitely broadened their musical horizon plus Korn III was definitely not bad either, what ultimately leaves us with just two out of their four last records being shit. Just because Head himself came back, everyone that stopped after Untouchables crawls out of their holes again and thinks their opinion truly matters. Gosh...now get your facts straight, catch up on these last albums and rate this one again - afterwards. If you would honestly do so, The Paradigm Shift would never in life get ratings above 3.5 - a CD featuring barely 50% tolerable material. I mean come on...Lullaby For A Sadist is the easy carry here and they wrote the song without Head. Also: if you turn the volume up and for one time stick to your good headphones, you would hear the loudness war that goes on in nearly every track, outshining the vocals and disturbing any harmony there is, for instance and especially prevalent with the dissonant synths at the chorus of Track 08, timestamps 1:11-1:33. They are fine before and after, but in the chorus, it just kills your ears. Plain and easy as that. Tl;dr: no guys, instead of listening to this mediocre record, I rather cry for my 'daddy' and 'follow the leader'...jm2c. |

Better than Caves, worse than Earth & Reshape Reason. Dunno what is happening to their vocals though - they seem to change heavily from CD to CD. Caves was very hardcoreish, Earth crazy brutal/low and since one year we mostly get this half-high Northlane-like screams. No one can change his fronter this often. I guess he must have gotten out of puberty or something... Overall an interesting release that mixes Djent with Metal and Metalcore without getting too generic, always pulling something like a solo, melodic keys or the like off the cuff. Even while not catching me to a one hundred per cent degree at all times, Between The Balance definitely marks their most versatile and mature effort yet. |

This should be on the radio.[2] |

Worse than A Lot Like Birds, worse than Hail The Sun, worse than Dance Gavin Dance but still way above average. They did not get everything out of the features imo and also they did kind of a fail tracklisting, giving four of the five features away in tracks 7-10 instead of being smart and mixing them more apart from each other. Aside from 'Our Last Night On Earth' and 'Year Of The Light' also lacking real hits for me...dunno. If this would have been a random band, not pushed and hyped that much (e.g. by Will Swan himself) I would not even give them several more spins. A semi-letdown for me in 2013. |

"ever sea born" is one hell of a song, also "leader in disguise" kicks some serious ass - but why in hell does "try to break light in pieces" drag so long...also the two interlude songs bring nothing meaningful to the table and are mainly filler material. all in all a great effort but not excellent at all - a little unfortunate for the german post-hc gods traeos. |

technically brilliant as usual, but a little too chaotic, overall missing the catchy parts. "Dare To Defy" is skippable btw, what makes Entwine The Threads basically a 4-song EP rather than a 5-track one. 20 percent filler? not that great, especially at such a short playtime (19 minutes). a good 3.5, nothing more. calm down guys. |

Not as epic and touching as "Their Dreams Are Dead,But Ours Is The Golden Ghost", but still beautiful. I hate the ones that created this site. How can anyone with a non-damaged brain POSSIBLY compare them to _AUGUST BURNS RED_ or _MISERY SIGNALS_?!??? What-the-fuck guys? post-hardcore -> heavy metalcore -> hardcore. this band can't decide at all. I wouldn't call it progression either...it's simply constant change. I don't know what to think about this, but each record for itself is pretty solid. Seen as a band, this is heavily inconsistent :D |

Its so bad...their worst actually. Not even several guest appearances can't help American Me...they are past remedy. Time to break up. |
Gloria Victis EP 2012 | 3.5 |

With Life In Mind 2, literally. A little more mosh and less melody, but only listen to "Deadweight" for once - its a masterpiece, nothing else. Kick the fillers "Mindless" and "Giants" and you have a great 4-track EP of a promising newcomer band. |
A Bullet for Pretty Boy Symbiosis | 3.0 |
unfortunately its not as diverse as Revision:Revise was and additionally there are only two or three songs which aren't generic and boring at all. also the cleans have gone worse - don't ask me why..basically you get what you expect by purchasing this record: nothing groundbreaking nor fun, but a slight-above-average modern post-hc/metalcore output from a band that constantly seems to match the genre mean. |
Bersarin Quartett II | 3.5 |

The Contortionist Intrinsic | 3.5 |
It's not what I expected, nor what I hoped for. This does not necessarily mean that the record is bad, not by any means, but it is certainly not anything fans or long time Contortionist listeners would most likely demand from them. EXOPLANET was a heavy deathcore experience with intelligent time signatures, crisp breakdowns and crystal clear ambient/progressive elements, maintaining a good balance between clean singing and harsh growling and/or screaming. But INTRINSIC is more of a progressive metal record that relies heavily on spacy and lofty riffing, keys and ambient tuning while giving a lot of room for cleans only. Comparing these two, one definitely finds a certain lack of heavy parts, featuring very little breakdowns and growled segments at all. Also, when The Contortionist tries to be brutal on INTRINSIC (e.g. on SOLIPSIS or at the middle of CORTICAL) they fail, completely exaggerating it on the brawly, noisy side. So all in all I did not know or could have imagined that TC were going fully progressive/ambient after their first album snippets, but it is not the change I had longed for, at least not in such extent. Finally, INTRINSIC is not average at all and actually pretty good in what it wants to deliver, but it does just not appease my musical appetite and all in all it's just too dull and constant to fully grab or entertain me. In other words: it's a bit boring in all it's consistency. 'Lost in space', one could say. |
For the Fallen Dreams Wasted Youth | 3.5 |
Thank god it's better than Back Burner. The cleans are often times misplaced but not as annoying as they were used to be. Lowlights are certainly weaklings like NO ONE TO BLAME or WAKING UP ALONE but fortunately the album also features tracks like YOUR FUNERAL, SOBER or WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE which showcase that not all talent of a former "genre/niche giant" is lost. A bearable listen for die hard junz-fans that are capable to fade out some choruses here and there plus people that have swallowed the bitter pill of FOR THE FALLEN DREAMS' kind of "downhill progression", if you even want to call it like that. |
The Elijah I Loved I Hated I Destroyed I Created | 3.5 |

P.O.D. Murdered Love | 3.5 |
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Saber, Querer, Osar y Callar | 3.0 |

Gideon Milestone | 4.5 |
I am sorry for all 'generic'-proclaimers but this record is not mindless chugging, it's chugging on purpose. On purpose of emotion, anger and hope. It utilizes brutality to showcase feelings and it does damn well. Consider records like FURY AND THE FALLEN ONES (The Ghost Inside), CHANGES (For The Fallen Dreams) or MESSENGERS (August Burns Red) - yes, it's that good of a chugfest. If The Ghost Inside would play great breakdowns on their new CD (which they don't!), these would sound like the Gideon ones over here. Awesome intervals and time signatures e.g. like at the end of "Bad Blood" aren't the usual metalcore listen, because not every band is capable of bringing technical skills to the table when it comes to junz. What's left is a hilariously straight forward record that features some of the finest modern mosh moments imaginable. A huge improvement from COSTS and definitely a record that makes you wanna break stuff afterwards and/or during the listen. Give it a spin and don't hesitate to move your body. Brain off, junz on. |
Icarus the Owl Love Always, Leviathan | 4.5 |
Strangers Holding Water | 3.0 |
for a KARL SCHUBACH production, the sound of this EP is total shit. everything is just too quiet and only the first 29 seconds of the opening track really shine in terms of mastering. after these I thought to myself 'dear god, what will follow now?' and then I had to face this particular disappointment. Whatever, the songs LAKE NYOS and SEVEN PERSONS really stand out and don't fail to disappoint at all, so ultimately the cd comes out as a little dig of mine. |
Narrow Hearts Strive To Change | 3.0 |
TesseracT Perspective | 3.5 |
Constellations Constellations | 2.5 |
solid output by the germans, for the future they only need a good producer and better mastering. also their main shouter isn't the best, maybe he should attend some vocal courses to improve his range, drive and especially his entry tactfulness. |

The Rendering Voices | 3.0 |
A slight improvement from Protector, but for their next output they should get rid of the synths and massive scene approaches. 3.25 because they know how to play their instruments and have some Legend/Acacia Strain vibes at times (e.g. listen to "End" in full). |

Bearable music and technique but their main singer is just outrageously bad. I cannot stand
his cleans because they are often shockingly off-key and because he uses a pitch I just find
very hard to listen to. He honestly ruins the whole cd. If this would be my band I would
either kick him out or collect money to sponsor singing lessons for him.. |

Artifex Pereo Ailments & Antidotes | 4.0 |
At the Skylines The Secrets To Life | 2.0 |
Aside from "143 Princess", "Turbulence" and the leastwise catchy "Chapter 7" this is pure rubbish. It's hard to even bear the first three songs of this disc. Imagine a bastard of Asking Alexandria, Enter Shikari and Cartel. Sounds retarded? It is. Brutal scenecore takes turns with cheesy, poorly sung pop punk. Thank god they borrowed Kellin Quinn from Sleeping With Sirens which tries to make a brave rescue effort at the end of the record...only the light of his presence keeps this longplayer above total squits-material in the 1.0/1.5-regions. |

even if I dislike 'bluebird' and 'spring' a little, 'summer', 'fall' and 'winter' are far too epic to get a 4 denied. an interesting and charming listen. |
Tasters Reckless ‘Till The End | 3.5 |
solid firstling, a little uninspired but nice technique at times. also fail track order, because all the best songs are in the middle of the record - start and finish are lacking a bit of quality. |

I cannot remember the last time I instantly loved a clean voice. It seems apparent that .Architect. changed this estimation. Five spins of this EP and you are lost in their heartfelt sound. |

a huge release. semi-"underground" post-hardcore/screamo from cardiff. definitely keep an eye on them - they're worth it! |
Helia 2036 | 2.5 |
a truly average output. they had potential and wasted it. "memento mori" showcases what they COULD have been. but no, they still preferred genericness, overediting and bad screams. |

this record is much better than CANCER but it ultimately fails at copying Parkway Drive appropriate. |
Jes Unleash The Beat | 3.5 |

Anathema Falling Deeper | 3.0 |
an interesting and calming listen. very gentle and scarce instrumentation. finally I get to know what the term 'turned down' really means, even I ultimately would prefer sigur ros' records over this one any day. |
Volumes Via | 3.5 |
more near to a 3 than to a 4. two fillerintro's, two rehashed tracks and six forgettable songs, leaving us with only two new outstanders from this record which is much too less considering their previous work. our sad result: the EP was much better, not productionwise but in terms of musicianship and consistency. nevertheless this is no bad listen at all and still one of the flagship's of modern day's djent. but as we see they wasted tons of their potential... |
Basement I Wish I Could Stay Here | 3.5 |
We're Not Friends Anymore You Are Television | 3.5 |
a huge step in the right direction. the very short intro seems to be waste.com, but the four songs that follow really show progression and musicianship. I hope they will release an album in the near future.. |
We're Not Friends Anymore The Constant Dreamer | 3.0 |
interesting and honest first EP, unfortunately not autotune-free. |
Thrice Beggars | 4.0 |

The Word Alive Empire | 3.5 |

Polar Bear Club The View, The Life | 3.5 |
solid PBC material in the usual manner. |
I, the Breather These Are My Sins | 4.5 |
Oh, Sleeper Children of Fire | 3.5 |
This seems like a typical grower to me. Despite of 3-4 tracks, Children of Fire is not really accessible and furthermore not as catchy as expected. A long term listen. For now, it's a good 3.5 for me. Might grow and advance to a finite 4, but as I said - this will most probably need some time and concentration/focus. At the moment it is slightly behind Son of the Morning. |
Bayonet Bayonet | 4.0 |
true hardcore like it has to be played. strong, harsh, wild and nothing but straight-forward. great vocalist, great lyrics...heartfelt stuff. slightly behind this year's killer release of heart in hand. a good 4 over here. |
The Venetia Fair The Pits | 4.0 |
very fresh, even if it's reminding me of older chiodos and newer panic! at the disco. either way I like it. a 3.8-thing, which seems like a weak 4, basically. |
Of Virtue Heartsounds | 4.5 |
me-lo-dy. misery signals 2. karl schubach himself would have been proud of this. |
Circle Takes the Square Rites of Initiation | 4.0 |
excellent. this is excellent. and it is the first time these sputnik rating words fit more than perfectly. the greatest improvement of a band in the last ten years, facing the fact that I probably hated ATRU more than any other record on the planet. |
Beneath The Sky In Loving Memory | 3.5 |
The Mars Volta The Bedlam in Goliath | 4.5 |
Alexisonfire Old Crows / Young Cardinals | 3.0 |
It Prevails Stroma | 3.5 |
3.75 with my expectations this could have been better.. |
Betrayal Abandonment | 3.0 |
a rock-solid moshcore record - nothing more, nothing less. if you like Legend, For The Fallen Dreams or Altars, you might dig this. the track 'Abandonment' shines most because of the TGI-guest vocal spot. 3.25 |
This Romantic Tragedy Reborn | 3.5 |
Motions and Miles Grace | 3.5 |
great EP but unfortunately nowhere near real In:Aviate material. it seems the drummer had a bigger impact on the band than someone would have thought. also sad they seemed to split again...let's wait and hope for a final reunion, I heard some rumours about this one or two months ago. |
The Paramedic The Devil in Me | 2.0 |
2.25 |
Then Falls Caesar Survive The Night | 2.5 |
boring. the cleans are the only outstanding thing about them imo. he sounds much like jordan blake, jagmin, ryan randall, stephen rezza and all the other modern emocore/post-hardcoresque countertenors. maybe stop the shitty metalcore parts and follow an original path...dunno. 2.25 |
Across Five Aprils Tragedy in Progress | 3.5 |
the problem with mr. higgins is, that he always speaks the truth. not okay, really not okay fellas...seriously. classy record. mainstream metalcore oldschool². 3.75 |
I Am Abomination The Passion Of The Heist | 1.5 |
boring, soft and the opposite of catchy. 1.75 |
That's Outrageous! Teenage Scream | 3.0 |
listen to my mate chris higgins, he speaks the truth. this record is hella fun and shouldn't be taken serious at all. 200% flippancy. |
APOSTATE Seaborne | 4.0 |
a bit hereof, a tad thereof...Apostate know how to steal and whom to steal from. but they do it in a technical, versatile and mature way, far away from genericness, so that you don't a priori notice that they aren't the most original band in the world. a recommendation for fans of maroon and august burns red. technical metalcore done the right way. 3.75-4 |
All Shall Perish This Is Where It Ends | 3.5 |
more like a 3.75. this record is really great. close to awaken the dreamers but more straightforward, even with the memberchanges. slightly worse than suicide silence's new though. and no competition with BoO/beheading of a king/circle of contempt because ASP are deathcore and want to be deathcore, no future-tech-ambient-chugridden-metal-deathcore ,) these bands can coexist without any difficulty. ps: I forgot - the record itself is definitely too long. |
Suicide Silence The Black Crown | 4.0 |
thank god it's better than no time to bleed .> suicide silence are back, remembering their cleansing-roots while bringing some new fruits to the table like guest appearances (korn, suffokate), whispered vocals and more guitar diversity. it's not the quality-record and instant "blow your ears up"-cd like their firstling but ultimately they are back on the right path, finally leaving the trail of fail that NTTB was, haha. good for them. |
Chelsea Grin My Damnation | 2.5 |
album is really weak compared to Desolation Of Eden+EP. without the comparison it's still nothing special and just a boring deathcore record tbh. sad one for CG, to me it felt they had huge potential.. |
The Dangerous Summer War Paint | 4.0 |
The Crimson Armada Guardians | 3.0 |
MyChildren MyBride Lost Boy | 2.0 |
Tangled Thoughts of Leaving Tiny Fragments - EP | 3.5 |
Forevermore Moths And Rust | 3.0 |
Breathe Carolina Hell Is What You Make It | 2.5 |
even facing heavy inconsistencies in musicianship plus generic and mainstream
instrumentation/singing, this record can at least be considered as a bearable effort and a
step into the right direction. maybe it will need another three records for them to really
produce something true and original, but that is not the point. the point is that these guys
are slowly waking up. slowly but steadily. |
We Are The In Crowd Guaranteed To Disagree | 3.0 |
some shiners but very short and a little bit boring overall. with a paramore-like songstress and old mayday parade'sk dual vocals there could have been done much more tbh. |
Falling in Reverse The Drug in Me Is You | 3.0 |
Crossfade We All Bleed | 3.5 |
consider me epicly stoked. one of my guiltiest pleasures in youth music history. |
There For Tomorrow The Verge | 3.5 |
Alkaline Trio Damnesia | 3.5 |
Alkaline Trio This Addiction | 3.0 |
The Air I Breathe Great Faith In Fools | 3.5 |
comparable with for the fallen dreams', better than eyes have seen the glory's but slightly worse than altars' new record. overall a nice piece of generic metalcore/moshcore. |
Beheading of a King Quasar: Preserving Legacy | 3.5 |
Heart in Hand Only Memories | 4.5 |
fresh, innovative, original, atmospheric, heartfelt, promising, huge, awesome. in short: a great record. nearly perfect for a debut. |
Voices (US) Anchors | 3.0 |
it prevails fake with weak breakdowns, boring cleans, solid shouting but huge melody and riffing potential. also the track fade out's/in's are hilariously good. overall no standout firstborn but definitely a band to keep an eye on, especially if they get a good producer for their full length. |
Oh, Sleeper Son of the Morning | 4.0 |
Rooks Infinite II | 3.0 |
not bad but not nearly as great as Infinite I's approach on a vague term like post metalcore. definitely needs a certain amount of spins to shape a trustworthy opinion. |
Carry Your Ghost Decisions | 2.0 |
weak, bumptious and hubristic for the fallen dreams-rip off with no feeling for time signatures at all. guitar and drum production are an 1:1 copy of FtfD's "Changes" and fifty percent of the breakdowns are horrible. some enjoyable moments of guitar harmony save this record from the tales of 1.X-newschool faggotry. these guys should seriously rethink their musical future. |
Of Mice and Men The Flood | 4.5 |
Dream Theater Octavarium | 3.5 |
Dream Theater Train of Thought | 4.0 |
Limp Bizkit Gold Cobra | 4.0 |
Blindside With Shivering Hearts We Wait | 3.0 |

Incubus (USA-CA) If Not Now, When? | 3.0 |
Eyes Like Diamonds Frequencies | 3.5 |
Destruction of a King Consumed | 3.5 |
Scar Symmetry The Unseen Empire | 3.0 |
it's definitely a suitable record for scar symmetry, even if they are too much trying to copy their older sound. The Unseen Empire stands above their latest effort Dark Matter Dimensions, but does ultimately not reach the quality of Aelvestam-material (their first three records).
something between a 3 and a 3.5 for me. |
City and Colour Little Hell | 4.0 |
Endwell Punishment | 3.5 |
Maroon The Cold Heart Of The Sun | 2.0 |
Trivium Ember to Inferno | 3.0 |
HRVRD The Inevitable And I | 4.0 |
really great listen. a band like a sea between the coasts of circa survive and minus the bear. tame and interesting post-hardcore with good ideas, huge emotions and a fine production. unfortunately a bit vast in it's length, what leaves the record a tad dull. outstanding tracks are "on with disease", "ghost" and especially "the earth" & "what we had". |
For the Fallen Dreams Back Burner | 3.0 |
listen to what steven spedding said, he speaks the truth. the cleans are annoying, the songwriting is weak and it's easily For The Fallen Dreams' worst album so far. sad development for them. |
Sleepingdog With Our Heads in the Clouds... | 2.0 |
one great and one bearable song aren't able to override six weak songs with obtrusive ambient parts, too extreme volume changes and overall evident boredom & mediocrity. everything that shined back in "Polar Life" (piano arrangements, vocal harmonies, perceptible emotions) is gone, what automatically leaves "With Our Heads In The Clouds And Our Hearts In The Fields" as the biggest letdown in 2011's music history so far. |
House Vs. Hurricane Forfeiture | 2.5 |
House Vs. Hurricane Perspectives | 3.5 |
LGND The Pale Horse | 3.5 |
Caliban Coverfield | 3.5 |
actually a bearable listen for nowadays caliban standards. they should become a full cover band, lawl. |
Caliban Say Hello to Tragedy | 3.0 |
Moving Mountains Waves | 4.0 |
Bermuda Isolationist(s) | 3.0 |
good and promising debut EP of a band I would like to rename into "Little Volumes". they kind of rely on the sound of last-mentioned band in 2-3 of their songs and even deliver a feature with the Volumes-shouter on one of them. unfortunately the actual djent parts are very rare and sparely used which could be an issue to fix for a possibly following full length. all in all the deathcore portion is still too high to really shine in a crowded and flooded genre like this. |
Arsonists Get All the Girls Motherland | 3.5 |
considering the sound, ideas and stuff, this is basically Portals 2. first half is kinda boring, the second is more varied. especially "will someone please turn down the ocean?", "tempest" and the beautiful "west cliffs" rule as fuck. unfortunately the rest can't keep up with these killer tracks. still a great record. |
Katatonia The Great Cold Distance | 4.0 |
Monuments (UK) We Are the Foundation | 3.0 |
dredg Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy | 2.0 |
aside from chillout tracks six, seven and eight (which really stand out) this record is just plain boring and weak. a shame for standard dredg material. |
Sleeping With Sirens Let's Cheers to This | 4.5 |
Defiler Pangaea | 2.0 |
poor record from a technically bad band that get's a little bit better in the last tracks, saving it from a 1-1.5 rating. |
Consider the Thief Signs and Wonders | 4.0 |
interesting and musically great thrice fake lacking some hits. |
In Fear and Faith Symphonies | 3.5 |
Here Comes the Kraken Hate, Greed & Death | 3.0 |
interesting and kind of solid deathcore with experiments and poor vocals. more like a 2-2.5 - dunno...in the end they are bearable/listenable. |
The Rise of Science Casey | 2.5 |
after comparisons with tides of man, closure in moscow and even circa survive, this was a huge letdown for me. tame music, boring vocals, awkward song lengths and flows, many good ideas but poor execution. also the phone calls(wtf!!!!?!?!!) are killing me. never heard such annoying and disturbing rubbish on a record. |
In League Where the Silence Is Easy | 3.0 |
no bad record for a first release, featuring some real standout tracks, but all in all too bland and unexperienced to really shine/satisfy. |
A Lot Like Birds Plan B | 4.0 |
The Destiny Program Gathas | 4.0 |
Memphis May Fire The Hollow | 4.0 |
Memphis May Fire finally get loose of their southern experiments and go "scene" - but do good at it. a new Woe, Is Me is born, equipped with more ideas, enthusiasm and versatility. unfortunately a bit weaker produced than WIM's straightforward "Number(s)". |
We Are The Ocean Go Now And Live | 4.0 |
Texas in July Uncivilized | 3.0 |
Texas in July One Reality | 3.0 |
Killswitch Engage Killswitch Engage (2009) | 2.5 |
Motionless in White Creatures | 3.5 |
I'm not able to not enjoy the junz. vocals are fine, too. also huge improvement for them, as far as I remember the EP's were shitty as hell. the goth passages are annoying at times though. |
The Plot In You First Born | 3.5 |
really enjoyable for a "standard" newschool/scene metalcore record. nice cleans and overall interesting for the fallen dreams-fake with a weaker shouter but less breakdownwanking. |
Minus the Bear Menos El Oso | 5.0 |
Circle Takes the Square As the Roots Undo | 1.5 |
Holiday Unheard Of Carta Marina | 4.0 |
Lady Radiator Party With Villains | 4.5 |
EP is epic and even better than their full length. "uglywoman" kills me, this song is just soo~o good. sad that they are dead and the singer left for 'the murder and the harlot'. poor destiny. |
Lady Radiator Bounce Energy Hear Me Out | 4.0 |
Between the Buried and Me The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues | 4.5 |
brilliant release. the first BTBAM that instantly grabbed me. |
Guano Apes Bel Air | 2.5 |
seriously. it's bad - for apes standards. 2-3 really enjoyable tracks, the rest is washed-out & mushy pop. easy forgettable, but sad for a comeback try. ps: the fact that the best track on the record (Fire) is just one of two bonus tracks on the deluxe edition symptomatically speaks for the many false decisions the band made on this record. |
Limp Bizkit Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water | 4.5 |
Limp Bizkit Significant Other | 3.0 |
August Burns Red Looks Fragile After All | 3.5 |

definitely their best work up to date. enjoyable record, reasy to listen. |
Thursday No Devolucion | 4.0 |
Thursday Common Existence | 2.0 |

Aglacia Generator. Operator. Destroyer. | 4.5 |

Various Artists (Punk) Punk Goes Pop 3 | 4.0 |
Asking Alexandria Reckless and Relentless | 4.0 |
It's not out nor leaked yet, so stop rating this record or I will butt fuck the shit out of your mother. Guaranteed. |
If I Die Today Liars | 3.5 |
Emery We Do What We Want | 3.5 |
a letdown considering In Shallow Seas. I hate Devin Shelton for leaving this band, seriously. the circumstance of two clean vocalists was the key factor that made Emery special, just like e.g. Mayday Parade. both bands screwed it. good job. not. aside from all that the record is fine in what it does. but it is just sad that they wasted so much potential. hopefully this will turn out as a grower in the end. |
Sum 41 Screaming Bloody Murder | 3.5 |
Panic! at the Disco Vices & Virtues | 4.0 |
who would have thought they come back with an album like _this_. it's so versatile and chameleonic...wow. I love the quirky moments and most of the diverse song outros. I would recommend anyone: listen to this record and form your own opinion. ps: my 700th albumrating - YEAH! :D |
Memphis May Fire Sleepwalking | 3.5 |
Ten After Two Truth Is... | 3.5 |
Underrated with a 3, overrated with a 3.5. Probably a 3.25-thing. Even if they come with great technique and good ideas, Ten After Two aren't able to grab me at first listen. They certainly delivered a fine record here, but I would heavily suggest them to work on their catchiness and accessibilty. |
Everyone Dies In Utah Seeing Clearly | 4.0 |
a good candidate for the introduction of the numerical value 3.75 here on sputnik. it's really not 'excellent', but surely kind of better than 'great'. it does not feel generic, even by definitely being generic at some parts. it's neither fish nor fowl. it's just a catchy record that clearly overshadowes the previously released EP of a band that hugely showcases something what - in the majority of cases - we like to call: potential. |

really enjoyable pop punk record. makes me smile. the singer sam sounds a bit like the old mayday parade singer john lancaster(now in go radio). |
We Are Defiance Trust in Few | 2.5 |
what IAmKickass said. sometimes he is so right that it get's scary. few words, huge outcome. |
Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows D.R.U.G.S. | 3.0 |
Adam Kills Eve They Almost Killed us With Their Hypocrisy | 1.5 |
hurts my ears. bad riffs, bad timing, bad singing...wtf. terribad ./ can't get into them, even if I try very hard to do so. actually one of the first times I had to stop a cd shortly before the end because it annoyed and disappointed me so much. at least it features one more or less 'good' song with Ready Steady Save The World. When Icarus Met John Nash is bearable too. |
Lions Lions The Path We Take EP | 3.5 |
nice listen along the way. next full length will be very interesting and certainly a record to look out for. |

Transit Something Left Behind | 2.0 |
did not work out for me, even if I am a sucker for acoustic music and cheesy pop punk. the guitars are quite plain and not technical & catchy enough for me plus the singer annoys me at times because he is off-key so often that it hurts my ears .Drmaybe or most probably it is a disadvantage not to know their older songs & outputs yet...dunno. all in all there are like 2-3 good songs on here but that is definitely not a strong reason for me to listen to this record like on a daily basis or so. |

Lena Good News | 2.5 |
This sophomore effort alarmingly showcases what is meant by the common term 'wasted potential', especially for a skilled songstress like Lena. 'Good News' features boring & tame songwriting and feels kinda rushed with this abrupt ending. On top of that it lacks the bluesy/jazzy touch of the forerunner and is not able to compensate the erstwhile hit frequency on 'My Cassette Player'. Apart from all that Lena is overall fortunately able to cover up the writing and carry the record with her warm voice and singing abilities. For the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, I would definitely have suggested to choose "A Million And One", which is easily the best song on the record. The song they have chosen ("Taken By A Stranger") is the only track that is kinda different from the others on the album and hence marks a bearable, but not a winning alternative. |

Not as classy as the EP and less hits than Wires..., in short: a better Adelphia. |
Emmure Speaker Of The Dead | 4.5 |
Surprisingly interesting output by a band that reached it's bottom with their latest record 'Felony'. On the one hand 'Speaker Of The Dead' is an incredibly brutal and heavy ride with some outstanding tracks like 4 Poisons 3 Words, Lights Bring Salvation and their two singles. And on the other hand it features weak, replaceable material like Area 64-66 or My Name Is Thanos and shows a kind of undeniable redundancy in breakdowns and overall musicianship after examining the whole length and consistency of the record in detail. In terms of production, it's easily Sturgis' best work ever. The bass lines are perfectly audible, dubstep elements, electronic parts and samples fit nicely and the general groove knows how to be hypnotizing and tight at once. All in all not really an excellent record, but a great one for Palmeri & Sons. Their third best, placing shortly after 'The Respect Issue'. 3.8 |

Calmer and softer than Homesick, coevally feeling kinda rushed. Overall a quite catchy pop-punk output with very few core elements left and a really short running time. This EP seems to be pensive, thoughtful and overall kinda meditative. I like this aspect. Solid live output of a band playing relatively consistent over the last couple of years. One song more out of "Impossibility Of Reason" for one "Infection"-song would not have been that bad, but overall nice choice of hits. Tone quality is fine, DVD with 7 hours+ bonus material is sick. All in all a very pleasing collection for a fan and nicely intriguing to newcomers. |

The Reign of Kindo This Is What Happens | 5.0 |
A versatile, mature and heartfelt symphony of melodies and honest emotions, paired with astonishingly beautiful jazzy moments. Fine musicians crafted a lasting, inspiring and fleet-footedly delivered piece of art that really seems to deserve the term 'art' more than any other record in 2010. I am speechless looking in the face of this magnificent work. |

Surprisingly good and nice atmosphere over here. Definitely a huge step up from the mediocre and bland 'Depravity', which also had a much creepier production.
