Flunk Lost Causes3.5
A remarkably consistent effort in which Flunk further solidify their sound. Lost Causes sees the band incorporating more of the trip-hop elements from their older album into the indie sound that dominated This Is What You Get. The result is a nice balance of more "catchy" songs with electronic and trippy influences. And of course there's Anja Oyen Vister's vocal delivery, which defines all of Flunk's music. All in all, I would consider Lost Causes to be their best album since, at least, Morning Star.

Catchy as hell, excellent vocal performances, great instrumentation, quite eclectic, bits of cynism, melancholy, and yes, beautiful ladies.

Pop record of the year.

So in the past years, LNA essentially released the same album three times in a row. But that wasn't really an issue, since their blend of house and dream pop (with excellent vocals) was extremely enjoyable. However, this album seems to have lost the magic. The vocals are still great and the instrumental work hasn't really changed either: the main problem is that the songs just aren't as memorable or engaging as the ones on the previous albums. Just go listen to Empty Streets instead.

The album can at times be a little too academic, but makes up for it by being so intriguing. Herndon clearly has good ideas and the combination of "classic" minimal techno and acid influences with more experimental sound manipulation is definitely a style deserving further development.

The shortest way to describe this album is probably as a mix of alt rock and EBM. Be sure to check out the title track.
Hidden Orchestra Archipelago4.5
Hidden Orchestra have created a worthy successor and natural progression of Night Walks. Archipelago is organic and electronic, classic and contemporary, relaxing and exiting, subtle and vibrant, varied and consistent. Although not ground-breaking in a major way and clearly not meant for everyone this still is one of the most beautiful, haunting albums of the year.

This is quite some beautiful music and technically well-executed. However, the sole use of piano makes this a bit to sparse for my taste.
Future Of The Left The Plot Against Common Sense4.0
Ryat Totem4.0
What do I like about this album? Of course there's Ryat's prominent voice and the way it is used as a major instrument and defines the album as a whole. However, I think the production is even more important: it's al about awkard, glitchy beats, manipulated instrumental samples and things I can't exactly identify - when listening to the album, it is impossible to guess what will happen next. As strange as this all may be, I can't imagine how the album should have "worked" otherwise. A great introduction to this album is Ryat's Boiler Room set, which is basically a condensed (but even more powerful) performance of her album: youtu.be/7dAPs5Pw5Twr

Obviously, a "real" rating of a classical opera requires mention of the specific performance. Needless to say that the 2011 performance I saw in the Sanspareil "Felsentheater" (Germany) was marvelous.
