Lacks the giddy bliss of their last two releases. It is both noisily tuneless and incredibly boring, an amazing mix that betrays a band so in search for their next direction they abandon the elements that made them palatable in the first place, instead burying their vocals and instruments under effects until it becomes a slurry. A few bright spots aside, this band has released far better music than this |

Spacious, Futuristic, and clever, Ocean's major label debut is both far flung and intimate. Production favors
warm summer-y synths and gentle drums that cater nicely to Ocean's croon. Ocean's songwriting is the real
star here, able to turn a 10 minute track like "Pyramids" into a multifaceted journey relating imagery of both
distant galaxies and sleazy bars without collapsing into R-Kellyisms. The album's sore misstep is in it's
length. There are too many short tracks and interludes for the album to have a real build of any kind; With a
smaller song selection and tighter sequencing this album could be something. For now it's a signal of rising
star in an oft-maligned genre. Frank Ocean will great things for RnB. This little gem is just the beginning folks |
