This actually might be one of my favourite ambient albums ever. No kidding. The only real blip is "Afterimage (-)" which goes on for a bit too long without anything really happening, even for the album which, as a whole, is extremely subtle. In some ways, though, it makes the album highlight "Dead Branches..." even better. Terrific effort.

Continues Mono's downward spiral since For My Parents. It's another decent-enough offering but nothing here really stands out. The opener and title track have their moments, but the truth is Mono just aren't able to deviate from their formula enough to remain interesting. By the time Hymn to the Immortal Wind rolled around they had taken their sound as far as it could go. Despite trying to change it up by moving in a darker, heavier direction these last couple of albums, it still sounds far too familiar.

Considering it's been 11 years since the debut, this was always going to be a disappointment on some level. Enjoy Eternal Bliss has slowly risen to become one of my favourite albums of all time but there was no way this was ever going to justify a decade long wait. rRegardless, it's an enjoyable outing with some of those familiar Yndi Halda elements rearing their heads every now and then. The highlights are "This Very Flight", which is the song most in tune with the sound of their previous outing, and "Golden Threads from the Sun" which has some gorgeous melodies. The opener is solid but nothing to really write home about and "Helena" strays after a beautiful opening few minutes. rAll in all a good effort from a band that most people had forgotten about but let's hope it won't be so long before their next one.

An incredible album that really transcends the sum of its parts. Individual tracks are certainly beautiful and can be easily appreciated on their own, but the experience can only truly be had by listening to this front to back. The field recordings are brilliantly placed and give a sense of narrative to the record. This is slowly becoming an all time favourite - it reminds me of the days when Sigur Ros' ( ) was the most important album in the world to me. Highly, highly recommended.

Michael Gira is 60 years old. He fronts the noisiest band I have ever heard. He does harsh vocals in half hour long songs. To Be Kind rules.
Agalloch The Serpent and the Sphere3.0
This is Agalloch sounding like a watered down version of Agalloch. "The Astral Dialogue" is
pretty sweet and the opener is a nice return to their earlier doom influences but overall
this is just a chore to sit through. Vanilla as fuck.

I'm not sure whether I should be taking these guys seriously or not. This album is the most fun thing I've heard all year (especially "Bloom") but it's ridiculously excessive. It sounds overambitious and the Dream Theater-esque wankery is a bit much at times - but if you take BTBAM with a pinch of salt and just enjoy the progressions and fun elements of the album it's pretty fucking great.

Not sure how this has a better rating than "Desolation of Eden" or a 2.8 at all for that matter. They aren't as bad as say, Waking the Cadaver, but they give them a hell of a run for their money. Awful, awful album - even the breakdowns suck

Definitely some of the best DSBM out there. Even though it's just a demo, there is a wonderful amount of potential here. I love the solos and the fact that there are no blast-beats, it adds to the melancholic nature of the music so well.

Alcest Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde4.5
A very consistent, dreamlike shoegaze release from a quite unexpected source (at the time) in Neige. There are very few, if any black metal (or metal in general) elements and this is a great accomplishment for Alcest. A fantastic debut that has its flaws, but makes up for them with sheer beauty and ethereal atmosphere.

These guys are just so tribal! While not their best album by a long way, this is a more-than-solid effort from Neurosis and with tracks such as "To the Wind" and "Origin" (with the latter's hypnotic tribal drumming and softly resonating guitar strums leading into a vicious and dense sludge metal assualt in the final 2 and a half minutes being one of the album's biggest highlights) the band prove that they are not going anywhere anytime soon. Neurosis are here to stay

Tempted to give this a 4.5 just because it's so underrated. It deserves something in the middle probably because the highs are so damn high on this thing. "Pink Cellphone" is godawful, yes, but the other 'lows' (Rapture, Mein) are still quite enjoyable, just not quite up to the standard of the rest of the album. Actually nice to hear an album with such a strong second half for once - most albums that are inconsistent are very frontloaded. "Xerces", "Rats!Rats!Rats!", "Combat" and "Kimdracula" are all some of the album's best songs.

Looked at from the perspective of a pop album, which is exactly what this is and is meant to be, this is a pretty fantastic set of songs. You can't help but sing along and admire the beauty of tracks like "This is the Last Time", "Bedshaped", "Somewhere Only We Know" and especially the heartfelt "She Has No Time". This is an excellent album that doesn't get enough love. It may not be the most musically complex or meaningful record ever made, but to look at it from that perspective defeats the point of what "Hopes and Fears" is - a beautiful pop album.

This is a rare, unreleased album that has been circling on the net. It's definitely legit so it's worth a listen if you're a big fan of the band like I am - however, if you're expecting the same grungy, metallic shoegaze that made up albums like Weighing Souls With Sand, you will be disappointed. This is very stripped down by TAP standards and doesn't live up to the standard of their other works. However, there are many good moments here, such as the mostly acoustic title track, as well as the decidedly metal Dismembered Antonella (one of the few tracks that sounds as though it could fit into one of their later albums). Overall an interesting listen and a few really good songs, but the many average moments make it clear why this was never an official release.

It's difficult for me to be objective on this album because it means so much to me. "Alone in December" is one of my favourite songs of all time and got me through an unbelievably tough period in my life. However, objectively, this is no more than a good screamo/hardcore album with outrageously cheesy synths and (on the odd occasion) lyrics. The emotion in this album is what bumps it to a 3.5 and a worthwhile listen.

This album lies somewhere between a 4 and 4.5 for me. While perhaps nothing on this album is lifechanging, it's an amazingly consistent release - weak tracks are hard to come by, and with classics such as "Citizen Erased" and "Micro Cuts" (my personal favourite), it deserves all the praise it gets.
maudlin of the Well Bath5.0
Making some of the most original metal music I've ever heard, maudlin of the Well have created an absolute masterpiece with "Bath". This album has it all - emotional gems ("Geography", "Marid's Gift of Art"), unrelenting death metal attacks ("They Aren't All Beautiful"), acoustic pieces ("The Blue Ghost/Shedding Qliphoth", the interlude tracks), as well as those that bring them all together (highlight "Birth Pains of Astral Projection"). Perfection.

In fact, there is a fairly close resemblance to Extol's 'Burial' (although not quite as professionally executed). Excellent album

If the production wasn't so bad (even on the remaster) this would be much better. Just not quite up to the standard of those though, but a fantastic debut nevertheless and one that is sadly overlooked by many fans.

Undoubtedly the best thing the Foo Fighters ever have and ever will do.

A classic in every sense of the word. I've been listening to this album since it first came out in 1997 and I still listen to it with the same sense of awe as I did when I first heard it. But there are also amazing drone, ambient, techno, indie, and post-rock compositions on here too, all of which contribute to the album's brilliance.
