Flunk Morning Star3.5
Flunk For Sleepyheads Only3.5
Flunk Lost Causes3.5
A remarkably consistent effort in which Flunk further solidify their sound. Lost Causes sees the band incorporating more of the trip-hop elements from their older albums into the indie sound that dominated This Is What You Get. The result is a nice balance of more "catchy" songs with electronic and trippy influences and of course Anja Oyen Vister's characteristic vocal delivery. All in all, I would consider Lost Causes to be their best album since, at least, Morning Star.

Hidden Orchestra Night Walks4.5
Hidden Orchestra Archipelago4.5
Hidden Orchestra have created a worthy successor and natural progression of Night Walks. Archipelago is organic and electronic, classic and contemporary, relaxing and exiting, subtle and vibrant, varied and consistent. Although not ground-breaking in a major way and clearly not meant for everyone this still is one of the most beautiful, haunting albums of the year.
Holly Herndon Movement3.5
The album can at times be a little too academic, but makes up for it by being so intriguing. Herndon clearly has good ideas and the combination of "classic" minimal techno and acid influences with more experimental sound manipulation is definitely a style deserving further development.

So in the past years, LNA essentially released the same album three times in a row. But that wasn't really an issue, since their blend of house and dream pop (with excellent vocals) was extremely enjoyable. However, this album seems to have lost the magic. The vocals are still great and the instrumental work hasn't really changed either: the main problem is that the songs just aren't as memorable or engaging as the ones on the previous albums. Just go listen to Empty Streets instead.

I appreciate the concept, with the first half being focussed on abstract sound design, followed by a second half of more violent club tracks (I mean, "Decoder", fuk...). Still, these interesting moments are a bit held back by some less engaging parts of the album.

Veil Records Veil/Unveil Issue One4.0
Veil/Unveil Issue One is the first issue in a new series and is the successor to the Symbol series on Veil's parent label Auxiliary but differs by the fact that each issue features four tracks by four different artists. This first issue is certainly quite varied because of that, but of course the tracks still firmly showcase the "Auxiliary Sound". That being said: all tracks are great with "The Noncolour Entity" maybe being the best solo track ASC released so far this year and ASC's spouse Vaccine drops the gorgeous, delicate "Irradiate" (why don't you produce more, Christine???).
