There are a few scattered clean vocal hooks later on in the album that are decently catchy, and the synths aren't overly offensive. However, this album is plagued by really bland writing. I was barely able to tell the songs apart from one another except for the horrendous "Alive", a full-out EDM track that is easily the worst on the record and perhaps that I've heard all year.
Abandoned by Light No God, No Sun, No Future1.0
Absu Abzu3.0
Abzu brings the riffs for sure. There is plenty of fast paced instrumentation all over this album. The production holds this album back from sounding as heavy as it should with a real lack of bass, and the songs can be a bit samey with all of the double-kick runs. But Abzu is definitely packed to the brink with a lot of fun for any metal fan.
AC/DC Black Ice2.5
Action Bronson Saaab Stories3.5
Action Bronson being Action Bronson. A major difference here is the production of Harry Fraud, providing a more relaxed backdrop most of the time compared to the music on Blue Chips or Dr. Lecter. Action is his usual carefree self, cracking sexual jokes and making food references. Most of this EP is quality and worth hearing. A few missteps, such as the cringe-worthy hook in "No Time" and a lame Wiz Khalifa feature hold this back from being up there with the amazing hip-hop releases this year. Definitely still worth any Bronson fan's time as this is incredibly solid.

After the Burial This Life Is All We Have3.5
This is an incredibly pointless EP, just a re-recording of a few songs off their first album. Despite this not being worth your money, the music is well produced and impressive as always. This is a decent little piece of melodic metalcore that would fit well on a playlist with ATB's other work.

Akissforjersey New Bodies3.5
New Bodies is a great and welcome return for akissforjersey. They manages to change and refine their sound (and become a little heavier) while keeping all the catchy elements of their music the fans love. The production is great and the vocals are the main selling point of this album. Some of the hooks sound similar to one another, and the album itself is nothing groundbreaking, but almost everything here will have your head bobbing.
Alaya Thrones3.5
The vocals are here are incredibly catchy! The production can be a little unclear at times, but the instrumental performance is proficient enough to make up for that. Alaya's debut album is a nice amalgamation of genres that sounds refreshing for the most part, even though it's a blend of stuff that has been done before.
Alesana On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax3.0
Alesana Where Myth Fades to Legend3.0
There are a ton of issues with Where Myth Fades to Legend. The overall mix is poor,
it's worse than their debut. Also, there are a fair amount of moments where the clean vocals are
just a tad off pitch that are scattered across the album, which is bad for the catchy sound they
were going for here. Many of the songs sound similar to each other, and the runtime is too long.
However, there is a lot of solid riffing, and most of these songs are well-written. I'm a big fan
of their approach to harsh vocals, and the constant trade-offs between the four of them create a
chaotic sound that I dig. Listening to Alesana's sophomore effort all the way through is like
eating an excessive amount of value menu items from Mcdonald's. You will deeply regret it after
the fact, but it's satisfying in the moment. 3/5

Alive In Standby Dream Status3.5
Dream Status is an incredibly catchy and solid album that seems to be striving to be something unique but just misses the mark by a couple inches. The soulful clean vocals are the selling point of this release, and there are some flashes of creative guitar playing as well. The rest of the album is pretty standard-fare post-hardcore, including keyboard/synth work that is limited but tasteful.
All Shall Perish The Price of Existence4.0
This album takes the intensity of Deathcore but keeps it interesting with the breakneck paces and melodic guitar playing. The songs are very well written but there are a few too many breakdowns in my opinion.

Amarionette [US] Amarionette4.5
Previously, on their 4-track EP, Dangerous Times and My Dangerous Ways, Amarionette showed us that they were a band capable of writing catchy post-hardcore tunes and that they had the potential to become something great, with a singer that did his best (albeit slightly overbearing) Claudio Sanchez impression throughout the release. On their 2013 self-titled album, you can tell Amarionette put a lot of work into this record, with the instrumentation being much more technical and calculated and still retaining their catchy factor. The vocalist finds his own voice, and works better as a unit with the band while still having his stand-out moments. Amarionette is a criminally underrated record that deserves to be heard and loved by more fans of Coheed & Cambria or Dance Gavin Dance.

Architects All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us3.5
Architects's new album, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us is a very technically proficient release. The production is great, taking atmospheric cues from Northlane's Node and Singularity. There's also challenging riffing reminiscent of their 2009 effort, Hollow Crown, and perhaps a bit of August Burns Red. There's a bunch of sections with vocals that land somewhere between clean and harsh, and they can become a bit grating when they go on for too long. Closer "Memento Mori" was definitely the highlight of the album with excellent use of synths and overall dynamics. The rest of the songs range from acceptable to great. I'd definitely recommend this to fans of the genre, it's a solid album, but it'd be nice to see them sonically branch out more in the future.

ASAP Ferg Ferg Forever3.0
Ferg Forever is a decent mixtape following his 2013 effort, Trap Lord. His flow is solid on most of the tracks and there are some great instrumentals. However, some of the songs are complete filler and come across as thoughtless. The features are hit or miss, with highlights from Twista and Big Sean. If this mixtape had the fat trimmed off of it, it would definitely be a lot better. 3/5

I don't really know why I was expecting better, most of these songs sound exactly the same. From Death to Destiny is a complete chore to get through. The occasional catchy moment here and there saves this from being complete garbage, but it doesn't make up for all of the boring breakdowns and the overall phoned-in performance from the entire outfit.

August Alsina Downtown: Life Under the Gun3.0
Alsina's EP Downtown: Life Under the Gun is insanely catchy! It's a shame a lot of it sounds the same, since he's an incredibly talented R&B vocalist. The features on here also drag the quality down a bit. Despite being derivative and unoriginal, this release is still really fun and I highly enjoyed listening to it.

August Burns Red Constellations4.0
This isn't the most original piece of all time... But Constellations is probably one of my favorite metalcore records alongside Stages and Controller. They really improve their sound from Messengers. In my opinion, Messengers had way too many breakdowns. Constellations, however, is more creative and is their best record to date.
August Burns Red Rescue & Restore4.0
This 2013 August Burns Red album sports improved production and the similar high energy
performances that are always expected with this particular metalcore outfit. It employs just
the right amount of experimentation that doesn't sound as forced as a few of the moments on
Leveler. The only downside with this album is that the songs still occasionally blur
together, which seems to be a recurring problem. Aside from that, this album is still worth
hearing immediately.

Despite occasionally being repetitive, BBNG2 is a refreshing listen that includes covers of popular hip-hop songs and a selection of original compositions. The musicians display a lot of talent throughout it's runtime (see "DMZ"). The production is also very clear, with each piece of the trio having their noise heard equally. Recommended for fans of jazz, hip-hop, and math rock.

This is a really great hardcore album that has good guitar harmonies and a unique sound that also takes from classic metal along with hardcore. I plan on reviewing this soon.
Baths Cerulean4.0
Baths Obsidian4.0
Baths is the pseudonym for Will Wiesenfield's electronic solo project. Rewinding to 2010, he
presented us with his debut piece known as Cerulean. Wiesenfield's debut displayed
itself as a carefree record that was as enthusiastic as it was ambitious. The glitchy and
stutter-laden feel of Cerulean, combined with its scattered falsetto vocals and
overall optimistic feel, was something unique-sounding to me, as someone who is relatively
new to this field of sonic exploration. This year, with his sophomore release,
Obsidian, his style has taken a drastic turn towards a darker side of electronic
music, I'd almost describe it as similar to Burial's 2007 record Untrue, except
noticeably more vocal driven. It's arguably even more vocal-driven than Cerulean,
which mostly works out for the better than for the worse. This is one of my favourite
records from 2013 so far.

Behemoth Sventevith (Storming Near the Baltic)3.0
Behemoth's full length debut has a nice blend of black metal and folk. I didn't really love the
production on this, the performances can be a bit sloppy at times, and some of the material blends
together to an extent. However, the interludes and "Hell Dwells in Ice" offer nice changes of
pace. For someone who doesn't listen to a lot of black metal I could sense it was very genuine,
and I even found a lot to enjoy. 3.1/5

Birdman Rich Gang: All Stars1.5
On a positive note, there's a handful of quality verses/songs on here. Busta Rhymes, Mystikal, and Ace Hood all do a decent job on the release compared to the rest of the cast. Birdman himself isn't even that bad, even though he doesn't really do much. With incredibly samey beats, and overwhelmingly bad features in abundance from Lil Wayne, Future, French Montana, Gudda, and the laughable DJ Khaled interludes. Rich Gang: All Stars really doesn't deserve a much higher rating than what I'm giving it.

Another solid album from Blessthefall that is about on par with Awakening. The slight shift to a more metalcore sound is more of a sidestep than a step forward, and the song-writing can be a little samey at points, but the performances are still solid nonetheless. Interesting synth sections and guitar leads are effectively sprinkled throughout the album that place this band slightly above their countless contemporaries.

Born of Osiris sounds reinvigorated on Soul Sphere. This is more or less the album Tomorrow We Die Alive should have been, a slice of synth-heavy progressive metal with more of a melodic emphasis. Unfortunately, the clean vocals are a bit hit or miss, and the complicated rhythms mixed with keyboard parts can wear thin when listening all the way through. However, this display of excellent musicianship, and it's overall catchy nature will definitely appeal to the fans, myself included. 3.6/5

It's really hard for me to peg an album like Pumpkin, is it just hard for me to
understand? Do I not "get" it? Or is this album just way too strange and a little boring for
almost anybody? Don't get me wrong, there is some great stuff here and Buckethead is able to
create creepy atmospheres on the record at times. This could definitely be a Death Cube K
album if there was less bafflingly weird banjo playing. But there is just too much
derivative filler that keeps me from genuinely enjoying it.

Buckethead Pike 133.5
Pike 13 is another one of Buckethead's softer, more heartfelt outings. The album cover shows him unmasked with his father, who was apparently ill in the hospital around this time. The album shows that Buckethead is still able to create relaxing albums that can tug at your emotions. The minimalistic nature of this album really has the power to draw the listener in. The only issue with this piece is that it lacks many highlights other than Track 6, the longest piece on the record that features percussion. The rest of Pike 13, while still beautiful and performed with conviction, sort of lacks the emotional climaxes and crescendos found in classics like Colma and Electric Tears.
Buckethead Pearson's Square3.5
Pearson's Square is one of the better entries in Buckethead's hit or miss Pikes series. The melancholy and beautiful melodies bring to mind other great Buckethead albums A Real Diamond in the Rough and Shadows Between the Sky. Unfortunately, some of the longer passages plod on, and the album itself isn't really anything new, especially for a dedicated Buckethead fan.

Buckethead began his "Pikes" album series in 2011 and has released a barrage of entries over
the past couple years. It's safe to say that It's Alive allows this enormous body of
work to start off on a strong note. While it contains a couple typical heavier tracks that
hardcore Buckethead fans would possibly deem as generic or by-the-numbers for his standard,
the album seems pretty inspired as a whole. The fun and energetic riffs, healthy doses of
experimentation, and numerous noteworthy moments make the overall experience a memorable
one.

Chiodos Devil3.0
This new offering from Chiodos is solid at best. While it is a little boring at times, it's packed with catchy choruses and Craig Owens shows a lot of improvement compared to the first two albums. Thomas Erak's playing leaves a little bit to be desired, but the sprinkled leads are enjoyable. Illuminaudio still retains the title of the best Chiodos album, but I feel as if there are still great things to come from this group.

CHON Newborn Sun3.5
An extremely colourful and catchy second release from the SoCal instrumental wizards. This is definitely a softer affair compared to the much heavier debut, but it still brings the heavy and the wank whilst still being pleasant to listen to. A couple interlude tracks and riffs feel a little empty andor half baked which hold this back from being truly amazing. Despite that, this is still definitely worth your time.
CHON Woohoo!3.5
A nice little jazz-fusion EP from CHON. It's a little lighter than their previous EPs, which makes for a nice change of pace. The vocals in "Ecco" are a great touch. This release doesn't soar musically like it has the potential to, but it is still quite the engaging record that is worth your time.

Infinitas is a beautiful, polished record crafted by talented musicians. Unfortunately, it's all fluff to me and all of the incredibly dry and compressed djent chugs run together after awhile, which makes all the songs sound a bit too similar to one another. The clean vocals are the strongest factor in this equation. Circles show a lot of potential here but just fall short of being memorable by a hair.

Confide's fan-funded album All Is Calm is definitely a step up from their 2010 album
Recover (which was a pretty generic affair). The band tries a few different things, throw in
a couple well-placed electronic parts, but a lot of it just comes off as Sempiternal rip-
offs doused in Risecore. You'll be trying hard to remember anything you heard after all of
the breakdowns and BMTH posturing. Joel Piper has a few catchy clean spots on the album, but
his vocals are way too processed to properly appreciate his efforts. This isn't really
worth listening to unless you're a huge fan of this genre.

sounds like it would be a B-side off of a Jonny Craig solo album. I'd definitely recommend

This must be one of the most emotional and bombastic albums I've heard this year. Sunbather is quite the beast of an album with multiple 10+ minute tracks. Deftones' debut album Adrenaline has a very fitting title. The album rarely takes its foot roff the gas, save for the occasional softer section featuring Chino's brilliant clean vocals. The rproduction is raw, but clear and fitting for a record of this sort. Unfortunately, while the rperformances are solid, the band is underdeveloped at this point. Elitist Between The Balance2.5
I really wanted to love this EP. After hearing Reshape | Reason, and thoroughly enjoying it
since it was chock-full of awesome riffing and metal in general, Elitist's Between the
Balance comes off as a bit boring and maybe even tired. The mix muffles the drumming,
killing the music's power a little. There is also more of an emphasis on clean vocal
sections this time around, they sort of sound like slightly less boring Miss May I clean
vocal sections, and slightly less boring isn't really saying much to Elitist's credit. They
seem to have dumbed down and slowed down the frantic pace that they had on the Reshape |
Reason and Caves (and Earth to a lesser extent), ESPECIALLY during the aforementioned clean
sections. Finally, "Echo in the Room" is one of the most boring songs Elitist have released
thus far. However, with all that said, Between the Balance is still not at all bad in terms
of metalcore, and I find myself going back to "Vice Versa" every now and then, which is the
highlight of this EP. But fans of more *progressive* metal will be a bit disappointed by
the band's technical regression.

Elitist Earth3.5
Elitist Reshape Reason4.0
Elitist have replaced their vocalist for a second time and dropped one of their guitarists,
thus becoming a 4-piece group. The music of Reshape | Reason falls somewhere in between the
metalcore sound of Caves and the djent influence on Earth. Fortunately, Elitist manages to
take the best of both avenues and compile it into an extremely hard-hitting slab of
metalcore.

Eminem The Marshall Mathers LP 23.5
Is MMLP2 the classic that hardcore fans have been begging for? Not quite. However, we have been graced with a slew of incredibly solid tracks that not a lot of people were expecting from the once washed-up emcee. It's unclear whether he'll even be releasing more material in the coming years. If MMLP2 is Em throwing in the towel, it would be a great note to end on.
Eminem The Marshall Mathers LP4.5
the MM LP is infamous for being one of the darkest mainstream hip hop albums lyrically in its generation. Eminem rarely missteps here, with the flow, production choices, lyrics, and humor being almost always top notch. The skits and constant profanity can wear on the listener near the end of album, but that doesn't stop it from being the hip-hop landmark that it has become.

Diagonal-ass niggas put out the latest volume of chugging patterns. Eternal Enemies brings back some of the nu-metal sound heard in 2009's Felony. This album falls somewhere in the middle of their catalogue in terms of quality.

Etienne Sin The Art of Stealing Hearts1.0
I can't even think of anything good to say about this. Awful production, incredibly shallow
songwriting muddled with breakdowns and cringe-worthy pop sections, ego-centric effeminate
vocal wankery (in the worst way possible), the album cover, and mostly basic
instrumentation. The only value this has is that it provided me with a couple cheap laughs
at how shit it is. Like seriously, just look at that album cover and you'll have a good
idea of what the album sounds like.
Etienne Sin The Paradox Divide1.5
This is ALMOST as laughable as his debut album except everything is marginally less shitty. Perhaps his 9th album will be a 3.
Evan Brewer Alone3.5
Evan Brewer is an excellent bass player, and it really shows on this collection of compositions. There are definitely a ton of interesting ideas on the record! However, unless you are some sort of aficionado of the bass guitar, you probably won't be coming back to this that often after hearing it initially.

Falling in Reverse Fashionably Late1.5
"I've been in rap since I've been shittin in Pampers" would probably be enough to justify
this rating. But I'll go into more detail, most of the rap here is garbage, some of the
songs seem to just wildly fly around random genres on the fly, probably at Ronnie's whim.
The cheesy ballad "Keep Holding On" (Which manages to include a breakdown), slapped together
country song "Drifter" and "Bad Girls Club" (I can't even explain this one, hear it for
yourself) are probably three of the worst songs I've heard all year. A few shining moments
like the guilty fun I had listening to the opener "Champion", the pure hilarity of the
record, and some of the lead work (most notably "Born to Lead") gives FIR's sophomore
release a couple points, but not enough to recommend this to anyone.

I'll start by saying that I've heard this music done hundreds of times before, and this EP can even be a bit predictable at times. However, Farewell, Dreamer have crafted a brief EP that is so fun and catchy that it can be an enjoyable ordeal for anyone who is willing to turn their brain off and listen. The clean vocals are typical but well-performed, and there are a couple impressive solos sprinkled in the mix (which I haven't seen much in this genre for awhile now).

The first five songs on this are absolute garbage, and all of the memorable moments that were of some quality on this LP were due to guest appearances, of which there is also way too many. There are so many posse cuts on this album that it might as well be called a compilation album, since that is what it really is. Cuts like "Gifted" and "Fuck What Happens Tonight" are actually half-decent, but the rest of the album is just boring or plain awful.

From First to Last Dead Trees3.0
Dead Trees is alright. There is some truly catchy material here, but it all seems a bit over-produced and way too polished. The production, and to a lesser extent, the writing, makes it sound more like a Periphery album than a From First to Last album. Fans (myself included) clamoring for a true successor to Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has A Bodycount will be a bit disappointed but will still find something to enjoy here. The last original song was a bit cringe-worthy, but brought back the occasional humor their aforementioned older material had. The re-recordings of older tracks were nice, and Spencer Sotelo performs them well. Unfortunately, it's just not quite the same without Derek Bloom playing his signature drum parts. Overall, I mildly enjoyed this, but these guys were definitely way better as a grittier Thrice-inspired post-hardcore band. 3/5

Fugazi In on the Kill Taker4.0
Fugazi is a very consistent band with a unique sound. In On the Kill Taker is a heavier and
noisier affair that builds on what we heard on their last album, Steady Diet of Nothing.
There are some interesting noise sections peppered throughout the album, a notable one being the
end of "23 Beats Off". Their production is always quite raw, but clear and well-suited to their
sound. "Sweet and Low" is a laid-back jam which is the highlight of the record. With a few minor
tweaks to their sound, this is par for the course for Fugazi, which is by no means a bad thing at
all. 4/5

Fugazi Steady Diet of Nothing4.0
Fugazi The Argument4.5
Fugazi's 2001 album The Argument has a lot more laid-back numbers compared to the rest of
their catalog. However, in the first half of the album, we are treated to a refreshing amount of
changes in dynamics. Following a strange noise intro, we have two bombastic numbers "Cashout" and
"Full Disclosure", with the former having excellent changes of pace throughout it's runtime. "Life
and Limb" and "The Kill", on the other hand, are much more subdued cuts that feature a lot of
guitars with heavy reverb, and a plethora of other textures used to instil an ethereal atmosphere.
"The Kill" is probably one of the most creative songs the band has written. The guitar interplay
here is probably the most interesting it has ever been. The bass chugs along right in the pocket
with the percussion, while still playing unique parts that cut through the mix. While a couple
songs drag on, or don't live up to the quality of the rest, The Argument is the most
creative and varied that the band has gotten in their extremely respectable career.

Funeral for a Friend Conduit3.0
A solid album that showcases the heavier side of FFAF. The vocals are passionate and performed well, and I found myself nodding my head a lot to the music. Unfortunately, a lot of this album comes off as stripped-down b-sides of Welcome Home Armageddon. The music can be a bit bland at times and the songs seem to run together a bit sometimes. However, this is still worth a listen if you're a big fan of this band.

This album is an absolute snoozefest, it's filled to the brim with breakdowns and syncopated 9 string chug bits. Perfect War Forever takes everything melodic and interesting from The Royal Thousand and swaps it for a buttload of binarycore. Also, the production is pretty bad here, with the guitars being way too muddy and unclear in the mix. There are a couple good moments scattered across the EP ("Lilac" is a highlight) and some head-bobbing parts that wouldn't be out of place on a Danza album, but overall you're probably not going to remember much after listening to this.

Godspeed, unsurprisingly, remains in top form with this LP. The closing track is fantastic and is the highlight of the album. The grand instrumentation, while being par for the course with this band, is always breathtaking to hear since no one else can do it much better. The drone tracks are an interesting change of pace, but run a little bit too long in the middle of the record. Overall, definitely one of the better records of 2015. 4/5

J. Cole's Born Sinner is easily his best in my mind. With skilled production and lyrical prowess in songs like "Villuminati", "Rich Niggaz" and "Born Sinner", and an ear for pop hooks (see "Crooked Smile") there is definitely a lot to enjoy here. The sparing use of guest spots is nice too, seeing as lot of mainstream hip-hop releases seem to be flooded with them lately. The only issue is that nothing here really breaks the mold, and sometimes I feel like I'm just listening to some amalgamation of all the other big rappers in the game right now.

This album is the definition of a mixed bag. There are some great tracks like "Ignorant Shit" and "I Know", with great flow, and really lame tracks like "American Dreamin'" and "Hello Brooklyn 2.0" (which could have done without the Lil Wayne feature). The production falters occasionally but is solid for the most part. While American Gangster isn't terrible by any means, it just sounds like Jay-Z on autopilot... Which just makes me want to listen to his better albums.

Jay-Z The Blueprint4.0
Jay-Z Magna Carta... Holy Grail4.0
Jay-Z's incredibly hyped up 2013 album more or less delivers what it promised, even though
it is sort of carried by everything except the MC himself. This is kind of funny considering
the amount of braggadocio in the lyrical content. Save for a handful of shoddy verses, Hov's
lyrics and flow are solid at best and mediocre at worst. However, the best parts of the
package lie in the production, and the excellent guest features from Beyonce, Timberlake,
Frank Ocean, and Nas.
Jay-Z Reasonable Doubt4.5
Reasonable Doubt is the essential Jay-Z album. He is at his best lyrically. "Dead Presidents
II" and "Brooklyn's Finest" are two of the strongest tracks I've heard from the MC, and
possibly a couple of the strongest tracks in the big pool of 90s hip-hop. The consistent
series of quality cuts and the nostalgic old-school production make Reasonable Doubt deserve
this 4.5 rating.

I really wanted to love this. Jonny's voice sounds as good as it always does, which is a
plus. The fact of the matter is that the musical backdrop of Find What You Love And Let
It Kill You
is mostly sterile synth pads and boring rhythms for Jonny to do his
signature vocal runs and melismas over. It seems like he took more than a few pages from
Abel's book this time around. Nothing here is offensively bad per se, but you won't feel any
need to listen to this more than a couple times.

Part 2 of Timberlake's 20/20 experience is another great addition to his grandiose comeback to the music field. Catchy and epic cuts like "Amnesia" and "Cabaret" make the 2 of 2 worth coming back to for more. Unfortunately, a few duds and plodding, repetitive sections make this the lesser half of Justin's series. Ultimately, the fact that Timberlake can release this much quality material in such a short time is admirable, and I'm excited to hear what comes next.
Justin Timberlake The 20/20 Experience4.5
This is easily Timberlake's best release so far. Sporting darker, more atmospheric cuts like "Tunnel Vision" and "Don't Hold the Wall", and tracks on the poppier side like "Suit and Tie" and "That Girl". This is probably one of the most epic "pop" albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

LGND LGND3.0
Legend changes a few things up with their follow-up to The Pale Horse. There's more clean vocals, which are a nice touch, and less djenty riffs this time around. The album is a mixed bag, and seems to be conflicted in it's direction. With less plain-sounding breakdowns, this could have been a lot better. Overall, with the added variety, it is a small step forward from the previous album.
Life on Repeat Blacklisted3.5
Blacklisted is a decidedly heavier affair for Life on Repeat. The riffs are fast-paced and the vocals are quite strong. The choruses here will always have you bobbing your head. While the music has taken a different direction and still maintained it's catchy-factor, Blacklisted can still feel a little bit static, with not much variety from song to song.

Lil Wayne I Am Not a Human Being II1.5
Lil Wayne, while I don't think he's out to be taken as seriously as other mainstream hip hoppers in his league, has put out some truly insipid music as of late such as the "rock" album Rebirth or that dreadful mixtape Hottest Nigga Under the Sun. However, with decent albums like Carter 2 under his belt, I always seem to be going back to check in on him every once in awhile, listening to a recent mixtape or LP from his prolific discography. I Am Not A Human Being II shows Lil Wayne at his sloppiest, which is saying a lot. After hearing a 5+ minute ballad about his dick, the rest of the album is the typical trash "rap" probably done better on his thousand mixtapes. A definite contender for worst mainstream hip-hop record this year.

MGK has never been a downright terrible rapper, and all of his releases have at least a few cuts that I find myself replaying a decent amount. From all the samey synth driven production to the weak guest spots (French Montana and Wiz), I hold Black Flag in the same regard as his releases in that it is only worth hearing to pick out a few highlight songs like "Breaking News" and "Skate Cans" .

Pretty much a bunch of 12 year olds messing around. There are some cheap laughs to be had out of this ("thundars!") but I can't even muster up the resolve to even give this a 1.5 due to the cut-and-paste guitar solo in "Electric Chair". I suppose this'll be something they'll regret recording in the coming years, if they stick with the whole writing music thing...

The songwriting on this record is good, and it is equal parts heavy and catchy. I feel myself coming back to it every now and then as well, which speaks to its replay value. Unfortunately the performance is a little too sloppy and the production is a little too rough to warrant a higher rating, but this band has the potential to be something great in the future.

Illmatic is a classic hip-hop album that many (including myself) consider essential listening for any fan of the genre. Chalk-full of excellent story-telling and aggressive flow, there really isn't a bad or even mediocre song to be found on here. The laid-back production compliments what Nas was trying to accomplish almost perfectly. Long story short, Illmatic is a must-listen.

Nothing really special here, Oceano's old stuff takes a bit more of a brutal death metal turn
that's interspersed with by-the-book deathcore elements. The production for the guitars is really
bad and both tracks sound almost identical to each other. Occasionally, you'll find yourself
tapping your foot to some of the chunkier parts. However, there's much better, and more fun,
albums in this vein to listen to. 2/5

Okay!Okay! Dear California3.5
Dear California is an extremely catchy post-hardcore EP that sports an incredibly soul influenced vocalist. The songs almost never let up the pace, and when they do, the softer parts are placed perfectly. The band is quite talented, and the production is quite raw but fits their style. The only issue I have is that the tracks can be a little repetitive sometimes with their verse-chorus format.

Hanson just because you didn't like something 5 years later doesn't make it the universal

Anyways, the new pth album is great minus a few dumb lyrical choices. It's a lot more catchy
and memorable, and chalk full of sweet top tier riffage. Adler's performance is top-notch
and supports the rest of this prog metal outfit near-flawlessly.

Pusha T My Name Is My Name3.0
Pusha T's solo debut is solid, containing enough tracks of decent flow and interesting beats to warrant a few listens. However, this album can be a bit of a bore at times, and he can sound like he's just bastardizing other peoples' flow and production. "Nostalgia" is easily one of the record highlights here. Overall, this is an album I'd definitely recommend to Pusha T fans, but it didn't QUITE win me over.

Red Seas Fire's new EP is basically an extension of what we heard before with their previous self-titled release. While nothing offensively bad happens here, you'll be hard pressed to remember anything interesting that occurred in the first two tracks, which seem like watered down versions of their previous material. "Of Motion" is the highlight of the EP, being a soft song with the clean vocals taking the main stage (it was nice to see the band trying something a little different for once). EP closer "A Life We Used to Know" is also a solid track that stands as the best heavier song here. Exposition is worth hearing if you're a big fan of this band and this scene, but I could think of a lot of more rewarding progressive metal releases to listen to instead.

This new album is definitely a step-up in terms of songwriting. The music is still way too technical, over-the-top and fun as always. However, this stuff is almost TOO ridiculous for it's own good and can be a pain to listen to unless you're in the right mood and even like technical deathcore.

Static-X Start A War2.5
Static-X is:
Wayne Static - lead vocals, guitars
Koichi Fukuda - guitars, keyboards
Tony Campos - bass guitars, backing vocals
Nick Oshiro - drums
Static-X is a pretty unique-sounding American metal band. I ended up mooching this album off my friend for a flash movie i was making. Then i saw i forgot to ever give it back. So hey? why not write a review for it. Well I popped into the CD player, and these were the first things I noticed:
Wayne Static - He plays some prety heavy guitar riffs that fit well with the song, and i think he does some of the effects. His vocals though, they are really bad at many points, some of his screaming/shouting in songs like "Enemy" can be good depending on your tastes, but to me a lot of the vocals in this album are really bad, and are one of the low points of this album.
Keyboards/Effects - The Keyboards/Effects are some of the things Static-X make good use of frequently in their songs. They compliment the album extremely well and are one of the things that make Static-X more unique then many of the other dime-a-dozen new bands. They are one of the high points of the album.
Drums - While the drums are nothing special, they are pretty good at setting a really heavy scene for the songs, and they always seem like they are "Building Up" to a storm, but they never do. Nick probably isn't the very best, but he seems to have fun with the album.
Bass - The Bass is pretty meh, it's hard to hear much of, and the bassist doesn't do much that is really interesting, this is another low point of the album.

The newest record by Strike Anywhere is not one to miss. In my opinion, it is a sendback to Change Is A Sound era. The musicians talent isn't really anything to write home about. If it ain't broke... don't fix it.

This band is creative in all the wrong ways. The songs are never generic, and can even be compelling occasionally, but they just didn't write anything on this album that I'd want to hear again. Act IV, in my opinion, is one of the most musically colourful releases of 2015. The
orchestral sections are competently composed, and the songs manage to be grandiose and catchy at

I received The Ocean and The Sun for Christmas the year it came out. I thought this album was going to be make-or-break for the band. The songs didn?t really click with me at first as they came off as quite boring and just plodded along weird and unlistenable ideas. However, when I started to listen more to what was going on, It slowly became one of my favorite albums of all time. The Ocean And The Sun is a stupendous and intriguing album. It boasts many different vocal styles, a plethora of moods and emotions, an amazing instrumental delivery, and is quite a cut above the rest lyrically.
The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza Thank You, Jason Dietz2.5
There are definitely some neat guitar riffs to be heard here, and some of the sample choices are
pretty funny. Unfortunately, the production is pretty terrible, and a lot of the material runs
together, even in its relatively short runtime. I assume this record isn't meant to be taken that
seriously. There is definitely some potential here that the band would build upon in the future.

There are a lot of interesting ideas to be found on this new EP, like the really strange noise and spoken word parts in the title track. The first two songs sound like they'd fit right at home on an earlier Used record as well. Unfortunately, Bert's voice just seems pretty shot with it sounding a little flat at times. They are showing potential to create something really great with their next album if they can develop these ideas a little more.

The melodic parts of this album make it a cut above the rest of the heaps of metalcore in its time. The Common Man's Collapse has breakdowns aplenty and is by no means a perfect record. However, it's a perfect record for someone who wants to hear catchy, smart metalcore and not give a damn.

Veil of Maya Matriarch4.0
Veil of Maya's 2015 release, Matriarch, displays a change in vocalist, and with that a change in their sound. The new vocalist is an excellent fit for the band, and the addition of clean vocals adds variety to their music that seemed to be yearning for development after so many years playing in this style. Fans of the band will still love the instrumental side of this band regardless, playing some of their heaviest material since The Common Man's Collapse. Soaring leads and crushing breakdowns are littered throughout the album's runtime. While this is definitely their catchiest release yet, it suffers from multiple tracks sounding similar sometimes. This makes it harder to hold the listeners attention for the entirety of the album. Regardless, Matriarch is a well-crafted piece of music that makes me excited for the future of Veil of Maya's new lineup. 4/5

For starters, I really don't know why I decided to review this album. Browsing the internet, I saw that this collection of compositions was being critically panned all over the place. After I acquired the album in a completely legal fashion without the use of The Pirate Bay, I began to listen to this album and realized I should have just trusted the reception I previously witnessed. After a pleasant and acceptable intro, #willpower mainly deteriorates into a lame collection of hit-single attempts and poor song composition that unfortunately overshadows any of the talent found on the record.

This is a pretty fun technical metalcore (deathcore?) romp. The guitar playing is great and the drumming keeps the urgent exciting mood going most of the time. I'd perhaps recommend Elite to fans of Veil of Maya. However, the vocals can get a little monotone and the songs can get a bit samey if you listen to this all the way through.

Although this is an improvement over the bore that was Genesi[s], you still won't remember much from this EP except for the fact that it is a little faster paced than last time (and a little catchier, too). We've heard all of this before though, and the two acoustic songs at the end sound almost identical to one another. Woe, Is Me ended on a very mediocre note with American Dream.

Wolves at the Gate Back to School3.0
Back to School is a well-performed covers EP, containing songs from renowned Post-Hardcore bands like Thrice and Thursday. While Wolves at the Gate infuses their heavier tendencies into this release, it ends up not sounding much different from the originals. This makes the listener question Back to School's purpose, but it becomes clear that this was purely just for fun.

YG My Krazy Life2.5
Any moments of brilliance here are marred by really poor and samey production and boring songwriting. Awesome guest features from Kendrick Lamar and Drake bring My Krazy Life's stock up somewhat, and the second half of the album is way better than the first.

Young Thug Barter 63.0
Barter 6 has some great production. With energetic trap beats and swirling synths floating around its runtime. There's a number of low-key bangers that will circulate in every fan's playlist for awhile. The grating issue with this album is that while Thug is very catchy, it can get extremely grating to listen to his crooning and strings of ad-libs for multiple songs in succession. This is a catchy party rap album, nothing more, nothing less. 3.2/5
