Blood Incantation Starspawn4.5
There's an ambiance underlying the record that elevates it as a listen. Throughout its short
runtime, it captures the essence of mystery, horror, and the cosmos perfectly. Your mind could
wander all day with the imagery, nostalgia and general feeling that Starspawn provides within its
unrelentingly beautiful and chasmic folds.
Ghoulgotha To Starve the Cross4.5
Death metal isn't supposed to progress, nor is it supposed to remain stagnant. Stagnancy is
unchanging, it's boring. Progress is growth. Death metal isn't supposed to grow; it's supposed to
rot. Much like a corpse will decay and change, for its namesake, death metal needs to retain that
character. I feel like many people will disagree with this position. I don't care. Ghoulgotha
represent the eminent decay of death metal.
Pestilence Malleus Maleficarum5.0
Bordering chaotic thrash metal and devastating death metal, Malleus Maleficarum is Pestilence's first full length and their most unabashedly brutish, heavy and wild album. They'd go on to hone their death metal style on Consuming Impulse, but without the haphazard thrash hooks and Van Drunen's raspy unique shouts, which turned into howling and wobbly growls.
