Space Bacon Nodes
Combine space rock with a down to earth rhythm section, and you have Space
Bacon. Their first EP, Nodes, is an excellent 4-track EP that showcases this
jam/funk/rock/electronic band extremely well. The songs on this EP are produced
perfectly, and
feature sturdy and irresistibly catchy guitar lines, bouncy bass lines, and on-point
drum work. Space Bacon is a pitch perfect rock/jam fusion band that doesn't overstay its
welcome
with meaningless studio jams, and doesn't rely on overly showy instrumentation or out-there
experimentation to get the point across. What remains is a highly accessible jam band
that even those who don't usually listen to the genre will appreciate. Definitely worth the
listen.

So many times, a band past their prime will release dribs and drabs of sessions like these, outtakes, "long lost" b-sides, and most of the time, they aren't worth your time. It's rare to find a concise collection of "vault material" that not only transports you back to how how the band sounded at the time, but also how they developed as the years progressed. All that's to say - keep going back into the vaults boys, we'd love to hear more.

The Longshot The Longshot
A side project of Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, The Longshot's three song EP continues on many of the same musical themes explored in Green Day's most recent music, especially the trilogy of Uno! Dos! Tre!. If you liked some of the songs from those albums, you'll probably enjoy this, though it does come off as a little bit derivative because of the striking similarities to that series of records.

The Vaccines English Graffiti
The Vaccines Combat Sports
Solid album. Closer to English Graffiti in vibe than any of their earlier stuff. Feel like it
has more emotional moments than EG though, probably more of a grower than any of their other
work.
The Vaccines Pick-Up Full of Carnations
Nearly a decade after modestly proclaiming that their third album English Graffiti would change
the musical landscape (spoilers: it didn't), we find the Vaccines regaining their footing after
the inexplicable Back in Love City and the huge loss of Freddie Cowan on guitar.

The best way to describe the sound here is a combination of the washed out vocals of their first
album with the basic chord structures of Combat Sports with a few nicely placed 80s style synths.
You could call this album playing it safe - 10 similar tempo tracks in 31 minutes don't provide
the most dynamic listening experience (shockingly, there are no ballads to be found on here, the
album could really use one).

"Sometimes, I Swear," "Primitive Man" and "Another Nightmare" stand out to me as the highlights on
the first couple listens. This is a good but not outrageously great album, certainly encouraging
for the future of the band and a welcome step in the right direction, but the loss of Cowan's
upfront fiery guitar on the album where Young "rediscovered" that the Vaccines should be a guitar
forward band is a bit of a tragedy.

If you're reading this, it's probably because you've been looking at Jack White's discography and saw that he plays guitar on this album. This isn't the "hidden gem" that you were hoping for, but it is a solid batch of garagey/punky tunes in the vein of Iggy Pop and the Stooges or a less refined/accessible version of Jet if that's what you're into. Check out: "Keep on Trash," and "It Might Be Bad."

Paramore This Is Why
An album that sounds like it was created in the midst of the pandemic in 2020 but released way too
late to sound relevant. If this was a stopgap release made in 2021, I'd have more understanding,
but the fact that this was 6 years in the making is nuts. I've read all sorts of reviews saying
"the front half is great" or "the back half is great" - I truly don't believe anyone thinks this
record is great all the way through for one reason or another, and that the hype will die down
because of a lack of any real catchiness. If I had to choose, I'd keep "Crave," parts of "You
First" and the title track. Back half is quieter but overall higher quality than the dirge of the
front. The weird thing is that the band itself sounds great - I actually think Hayley has lost a
little bit vocally, leaning more on the "quiet" tricks she picked up during her solo career. I
just know they're capable of so much more.

Shit's boring. How many times can we re-use the same musical textures and lyrical rhythms? I actually thought Midnights was interesting because it represented another change for her...this is like a longer Midnights, worse lyrics, less interesting musical things.

I really wanted to like this album, especially since Lush was such a breath of fresh air, but
this never hooked me in past the first track. It especially dragged during the ballads where
she does her trademark "just hitting puberty/broken vocal" kinda thing over and over again
stretching for some emotion. I'm sure there's a lot more meaning deeper in the lyrics, but
the music here is so fabulously dull that I can't stop thinking that this may be just an
overhyped Pitchfork sophomore slump.

Let's be honest, the Fratellis are done putting out albums like Costello Music or even Here We Stand. Seemingly no longer masters of rhythm, lyrics, or even melody, the Fratellis manage to spin 2 decent tracks in a collection of 11, "Starcrossed Lovers" and "I've Been Blind." The rest aren't necessarily insulting to the listener, but mainly consist of plodding, mid-tempo, snyth assisted country-fried clunkers. Shame.
