This is definitely one of the finer prog metal releases of recent times, and certainly of this year so far too. Each song more or less sounds different to the other, and the way in which instrumental performance is co-ordinated in songs like "The Entity", "Life?" and "Rebuild the Ruins" reminds me (in a good way) of Myrath's debut album.

One thing that made made fall instantly in love with this album is its very spiritual energy flowing throughout. You can feel the amount of effort being put into the production of the album and it's simply almost too good to be true. The mixture of evocative, sometimes atmospheric black metal and beautifully integrated eastern influences feels like the perfect musical combination. To be honest, the band's harsher side reminds me of both Borknagar and Burzum, whilst the eastern influences give the band freedom to roam in their own musical world. One of 2013's best extreme metal albums? For me, definitely.

Fields of the Nephilim Elizium
Such a hauntingly beautiful album, and it actually stays with you hours after you've stopped listening to the album itself. It's that memorable. Not just that, but McCoy's voice on here is incredible. Melodic overtones and gothic atmosphere make this one of the albums of the 90's for me.

Its always refreshing for me to hear a Fish album, especially as he is one of my favourite solo musicians. This album has in particular so much variety its almost impossible to note every little thing that makes his music stand out so. The last six songs (contributing to a 25 minute opus called 'Plague of Ghosts') are maybe drawn out a little too long, but not enough to take away from the core values of this promising album by Fish. I sometimes wonder whether marillion or Fish is actually better.

This album is thoroughly brilliant from start to finish. The swathes of Gothic keyboards, progressive song structures, menacing vocal delivery, beautiful guitar work, it's all tightly packed into this 50-minute package-the sound of which is right up my alley. Sure, that may sound fanboyish, but I genuinely love this album having heard it three times already. It simply gets better and better. Highlights of this album could be any song really, but for me personally it's "Letter XIX" and "An Acousmatic Guardian" (Had to look up the definition of "Acousmatic") that really effectively convey this band's best musical talents to the listener.

Steven Wilson The Raven That Refused to Sing
Genuinely thought that this was a novel when I saw the title, but later found out that it was a new album by Steven wilson. I've no idea what my expectations for this are, because every album he's ever been involved in is interesting in some way. I think he was talking about doing a new PT album too, so this year he's being a busy, busy bee. Like every year.

This is about the most blackened piece of music I've heard all year. It sometimes reminds me of early Candlemass and other times of very early MDB, but with a unique and original twist thanks to those well-orchestrated parts throughout. 'Malefica', 'A failed exorcism' and 'Ordeal' alone made me want to check these guys out more. The closer is a little underwhelming for me, but even then there's a sense of grandiosity and epic overtones.

An Autumn For Crippled Children Try Not To Destroy Everything You Love
Beautiful album, very atmospheric, and epic in all the right places. It's certainly lifted my spirits that's for sure, although that's probably not what the band intended when making this album. Definitely one of the better albums I've listened to from this genre for a long, long while.

Very solid, very consistent thrash metal album which will surely turn out to be one of 2015's stronger metal releases. No particular highlights here for me stand out because there's isn't one which is filler material. I do, however, think the album has a very fitting closer, even if a little long. Musicianship is solid, and vocals are nicely versatile, though they do at times remind me of Rob Jukes in his Exodus period.

Very solid album, and particularly raises all the good points of a genre at risk of sounding outdated. The keyboards make songs such as 'At the well of the Nazareth' and 'The source' all the more exciting and evil-sounding to listen to, whereas the bass-heavy 'The transit begins' and 'Shiver' obviously favour heavy guitar sounds a la Pentagram (in the 80s), making for a rather unique sound.

A very different sound compared to what we've heard from BMTH in the not too distant past. In particular the production seems a lot more atmospheric and Sykes' vocals seem to have more of a range than usual. There are a lot of songs on here that I could say are the band's best: 'The house of wolves', 'Empire (let them sing)','Shadow Moses' and 'Crooked young', the latter of which making for a very nice sound using symphonic sounds and consequently giving off a classical feel. If this is the direction the band are heading in, I have no doubt that I will become a bigger fan than ever before.
Broken Hope Omen of Disease
Excellent album. Some very brutal and sometimes technical death metal here, though you have to try hard to find variation in some aspects of the band's sound. The vocals and drum rhythms are more or less the same all the way through, but the guitar and bass work is extremely well-executed, specifically on 'Ghastly', the title track and 'The docking dead'. I didn't realize this band were around for as long as they have been either.

Excellent album, though it took me a while to get into it. I think it's because of the first two songs, which I thought at first were a little too long for their own good, but then the rest of the album automatically impressed me and kept me hooked. With the exception of the brilliant final song, I prefer the two shorter tracks ("Einkehr" and "Verbund") to the lengthier material, but as a whole this is simply a well-written, well-performed black metal release.

The album Elvenking should have made after "The Winter Wake" in my opinion. It features everything that made the band's first three albums so unique whilst still retaining a melodic yet epic atmosphere, helped to become more relevant by intricate folk musicianship. My personal highlights are the amazing "King of the Elves" and "Twilight of Magic", though near enough every song on here is just as good in their own particular way.

I was initially introduced to Enthroned's music via "Carnage in Worlds beyond", so it's fairly unsurprising that this album is musically similar. That's not a bad thing at all however, given how aggressive and powerful the musicianship is. Not only that, but the more complex likes of "Vortex of Confusion" and "Seven Plagues, Seven Wraths" really impressed me. The vocals for me are still weak in comparison but nonetheless suitable for this musical style.

Extreme III Sides to Every Story
From start to finish, this is an undoubtedly ambitious concept album which, if not immediately successful, was for Extreme a career-defining piece of work. Split into three parts, the album explores and covers a lot of musical ground. The first part has the most in common with Extreme's earlier material (but is still very reliable given the band's hard-working musical ethic), the mid-section is experimental and proves Bettencourt is more than just a talented guitarist, and the last three songs verge on progressive rock territory. It's a big album to take in, and will require more than one listen to enhance the whole experience, but is certainly a rewarding listen by the end.

Nice album. I particularly like the harshness of the vocals and the musicianship here often accompanies those vocals in the right sort of way. The mixture of blackened riffs and a southern rock tone throughout makes for an interesting sound, though at times this can wear a little thin if played on a repetitive basis. That said, the album is generally very consistent and in my opinion never quite lets up.

Excellent album. These guys have done a stunning job both musically and conceptually here. Sure, it obviously draws many influences from the likes of Bathory (who doesn't in this sub-genre?), but the way in which atmospheric black metal is fused together with melancholic mood and flourishes of Pagan music simply collaborates for what is an hour of grandiose music. Any song here could be seen as a highlight, but my personal favourites would have to be "From Son to Father" and the epic two-part closer "Alexandros".

This album has a rich, prominent tone rooted deep in gothic music which continually reminds me of Candlemass' 80s era. For that reason I quite like it, and the way in which this tone is carried out consistently from start to finish makes songs like the brilliant 'The Place Behind the Sky' and slow but dramatic closing title track. The band's name may be pretty obvious as to what one would expect (Is "Occultation" even an actual word?), but they more than make up for this with the musicianship.r

A nice slice of sludgy, hypnotic doom. 'Evergreen' is beautiful and 'Woodbine' is powerfully heavy. I really like how the vocals sound so mesmerizing at times too, as on the album opener 'Orchard'.

Decent enough by tech death metal standards but I feel like some of these riffs and solos are forced in rather than flowing with the rest of the instrumentation in a natural way. It's mostly impressive musicianship that's on display here, with vocals a little too hesitant but still relevant for the most part. The first half of the album seems better written than the latter half.

Very interesting album, which is naturally controlled by epic, ambitious atmospheres and a rhythm section which very rarely becomes dull and bland. The vocals however really don't seem to match the quality of the instrumentation, and thus it sounds a little mixed at times. As on 'Sol Invictus' and 'Twelve stars and an azure down', the guitar work is beautiful and the drum/bass work flows very well indeed, but shoddy vocals which prove considerably weaker unfortunately lower the quality a bit. This is however more than made up for with the brilliance of songs such as 'Hersiarch' and excellent closer 'White goddess unveiled', both of which written from the heart and soul.

Pretty good album indeed. I think sometimes the band sound a little too similar to Talanas or Enslaved for my liking, but for the most part they are doing the job just right. Clean vocals are very effective against a constant barrage of progressive black metal structures and sometimes epic atmospheres, though the cleans can be surpassed by the intensity of the growls.

Reminds me quite a lot of 80s era Kiilling Joke (and maybe the latter era of that same band too), but in a good way and which never seems to get the point where this band are basically a copycat. There's a lot of neat little touches here and there in every song-but what particularly stood out to me was the very prominent bass work, and its solid collaboration with the sometimes gritty, sometimes melodious guitar style. To me what drags the album down a bit is how the vocals seem a little "off" at times, especially in the album opener and "Dark Life of Seduction", and "Comedown" just irritates me every time I listen to it. But this is mostly made up for by the eccentricity of songs like "Course Correction" and "Sharp Fangs, Pale Flesh".

This album gets better as it progresses-and I mean that quite literally. I mean, the first half of the album for me is simply average stuff, going through the motions as far as the band's musical capability is concerned, but then songs like "Born Twice" and "The Loss" rip through the stereo, and you're suddenly wondering where all this fight and vigour was with songs as lame as "The Sunset Curse" went. Nonetheless, that's pretty much it. If I'm being completely honest, it's the stale vocal delivery which really annoyed me and was the main reason why I couldn't quite get into the beginning of the album, but it's made up for by the excellence of "Sorcery" and "O, Inverted World". So in that respect, a fairly disjointed, inconsistent album, but one which by the end seems to be a pleasant surprise.

A very pleasant album to listen to, especially for those who love atmospheric black metal/post-rock/ambient, but the one thing which stopped from liking it any more was the fact that most of the songs never really exploded like I expected them to. That said, the highlights of the album itself are definitely in the three-part title track at the end, combining wispy atmosphere and slight psychadelic flourishes into a half-hour opus. That's essentially as ambitious as Dynfari get here.

This album really surprised me, though I didn't quite know what to expect before pressing play. For me the real problem here is how clouded everything sounds, but once you listen to the album a few times I guess you can get used to it. Musically it's pretty full on as far as the extreme metal part of the musicianship is concerned, and the background noises such as screeching violins, tinkling keyboards or orgasmic (?) female moans and wails add extra effect. I only wish the production could be a bit clearer to truly emphasize these little sounds.

Fudge Tunnel Hate songs in E minor
Well, it's nice to discover another band from my city (Nottingham). Listening to this debut album by Fudge Tunnel, I can see a lot of similarities to Clucth's early days and Acid Bath, but this certainly brings the grit and the riff power. I believe the album really picks up during the second half, as the first few songs didn't grab my attention as much. I like the more metallic, extreme side of songs like "Soap and Water" and "Tweezers" and that cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" is pretty ace. Only thing that dragged the overall quality down a bit for me was how the vocals sometimes seem a little too restrained (not as prominent as the instrumentation if I'm honest), but it's generally a really good sludgy piece of music.
Fudge Tunnel Creep Diets
Just as good as the band's debut, but I think this album has a few more hook-laden songs, namely on opener "Grey" and "Grit" amongst others. The band made an official video for "Grey", and it seems to match the gritty nature of the song quite well.

To me this is the band's best album by far, and that's probably because I think it's more concise than Gama Bomb's other albums. Just short enough to be enjoyed, and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Nothing out of the ordinary for this style of thrash either, but then that's exactly what Gama Bomb intended. Maybe.

By far the stand-out highlights of this album are the title track and "Hellrazor", but the album in general does seem to be a little more 'diverse'. Not so much that the band are taking a deliberate turn in the opposite musical direction, but it's somewhat easier to identify the NWOBHM-influenced songs from the punkier, rockier tunes like "Take it from Me" and "It Turns Your Head Around". I actually like the vocals here for the most part, though the nasally delivery on "Hellrazor" is pretty annoying. All in all, another solid 80s output from Girlschool.
Girlschool Hit And Run
All in all on par with the band's debut, though I prefer the vocal delivery of this album and the instrumental performance of Demolition. Nonetheless, there's still some really decent hard rock/metal riffage going on here, specifically in songs like the title track and "The Hunter".

Gorgoroth Antichrist
Another great Gorgoroth album which is at least on par with the band's debut, but the only thing that bothers me is the really short runtime-the album almost feels like it's about to end when in fact it's just started. "Sorg" is nice enough to end things with, but it didn't really strike me as the sort of "album closer", more like just another song to add to the rest here. So yeah, I guess you could say it's anti-climactic, but then "Gorgoroth" and "Possessed (By Satan)" seem to make up for it.

A simplistic, raw black metal record which somehow never fails to be consistent in its delivery. The first two songs are notably the weakest, but from that point onwards the album seems to take a more maturer songwriting ethic into consideration, even improving on the vocals and general musicianship which is certainly rife in songs like "Puhdas" and "Sodan Roihu" amongst others. Whilst it does sometimes prove a little uninspired, the album should please fans of black metal if nobody else.

A very solid album with some outstanding ambitious tracks and some which are by comparison much less effective. That said my main problem with the album is how the vocals half the time feel too forceful as opposed to just seeming natural...but then I guess I should have expected that walking into a hardcore album. Nonetheless, the highlights are practically obvious for me-"In Circles" and "Depression" particularly impressed me.

A lot of promise on show here, especially in regards to the way in which melody and brutal technical musicianship is intertwined. "Lost Pages" has a wonderful ambient section and the solos throughout "Stories through the storms" and "My Cancer" are well executed. I think the main problem here is the band's lack of focus sometimes as structures becomes too clogged up with unnecessary additional dynamics or electronic interludes.

This is a very powerful record as far as instrumentation is concerned, but the half-hearted vocals slightly ruin the experience for me. Nonetheless, most songs here feature a very sound transition between aggressive, more solid metal sounds to quieter albeit just as intense passages. Highlights for me would be "Ao Vori" and "Meo Drekum".

Band has obviously been listening to a lot of 80s metal for inspiration, and there's a lot of proof in each of this album's nine songs. Nothing wrong with that though because instrumentation is very solid and catchy all the way through. The vocalist for me brings the quality down a notch or two, but I think you can get past that by considering how well done the solos are in songs such as the title track and "Sign of the warrior".

Pretty good album, even if every song pretty much follows the same formula. It's essentially an album full of punchy powerful songs and soaring vocals, just like consistent power metal should be. Not sure why it's labelled here as "progressive" power metal (I myself can't see where the progressive part comes in), but it'd definitely consistent as a power metal album. A few weak tracks on here such as 'Follow', 'Ares' and 'Absence of light' disappointed me a little, but that's probably only because they're overshadowed by stronger songs such as excellent opener 'beneath a veil of crying souls' and 'Within a dream'.

Decent, traditional black metal with so-so vocals. The musicianship however is spot on for this sound, and the twisted nature of "Dynamic Underworld" and "A Foot in each Hell" works very well.

Very lush atmosphere, a lot of things going on here-often at the same time. I would prefer it if there were vocals on some of the tracks-particularly the first two and "Belenos"-but I guess that's just asking too much from a band who obviously focus on delivering some of the most interesting post-metal influenced they can conjure. It's just that there were moments throughout the album where I felt a good usage of vocal delivery could elevate the effectiveness of the instrumentation, so that a greater first impression would ensue. Nonetheless, there's some excellent songwriting here, and by far my favourite song of the whole album is "Viesca".

Crossfaith Xeno
Culted Oblique to All Paths
Ideas here are interesting but the main problem is that most of the songs are drawn out for too long. The first half of both 'Brooding Hex' and 'Illuminati' are brilliantly executed but at some point the instrumentation becomes rather stale, and though this does indeed suit the doom sub-genre rather well, there could have been a stronger emphasis on power and surprise than simple repetition. That said, 'March of the wolves' and 'Transmittal' are monolithic in atmosphere.

Honestly found this album a very mixed bag. Some songs I can't stand ("Vassalplasty", "The Odious Tides"), some I really enjoyed ("Irresistible Foe", "Controlled Burn") and others were just really strange to listen to "namely "Progeny of Pain" and "The Eagles Grasp"). I think the main flaw here is inconsistency, because some songs are really so much better than others, to the point where the actually stand out as being such. Nonetheless, it's decent for what it is but not much more. Some nice musical ideas thrown around, but by the end it leaves a little bit of underwhelming feeling, more so for those who expected this to be an excellent album.

Good, but this album is essentially a mixed bag. Some songs are instrumentally brilliant, whereas others simply get lost in themselves far too quickly and as a result have no sense of direction. The vocals are okay, sometimes even brilliant, but too often seem to take away from the focus on the musicianship. It also suffers from the fact that the vocals appear a little too low in the mix, so what you're really hearing is an unbalanced sound. That said, the songwriting here is very consistent and near enough every song manages to regain its excellent musical quality because of that. My personal favourite song would be the instrumental 'A negligible senescence', though only because it focuses on instrumentation.

Even though Evile's core faults are still evident in this album (too close to the overall thrash movement) there is some classic material here, as on the acoustic 'In Memoriam'. A brilliant album for 2011.
Evile Skull
Exodus Force of Habit

Decent enough by Metalcore standards, but the vocals here really distract me from the (sometimes) brilliant heaviness on tracks such as 'Killing in your name' and 'Surface'. At least it's an improvement over the last few rubbish Metalcore albums I've had the pain of listening to.

Not quite as bad as people are making out, but that doesn't change the fact that this album-and band-are over-hyped. Half of the songs are little better than a sub-par Emmure/Slipknot crossover style yet the other half are somewhat experimental and, dare I say it, unique. The dark-tinged "Take it" and "Devil don't Cry" largely eclipse the monotony of songs like "Best Nite of my Life", and closer "State of Nature" succeeds in ending the album on a relative high. A mixed album which will undoubtedly divide fanbases in the near future, but which is also sort of career-defining.

Interesting in parts, but this album just has a 50/50 balance of good psychedelic music and boring ambient sections which frankly left me hovering over the skip button. Maybe with the band's next album they can come up with something truly unique, but the debut album is simply above average at best.

Girlschool Play Dirty
This is basically Girlschool at their most average, and what the band played on those first few great albums wasn't particularly special either (just really solid and well performed), so Play Dirty as a whole simply seems like a bit of a rehash of all the band's flaws. The 80s glam influence is undeniable (particular in regards to the production), but there are some good moments here, notably 'Breaking All the Rules' and the heavier riff moments of 'Burning in the Heat'. Aside from that, this represents the band going through the motions.
Girlschool Nightmare at Maple Cross
A modest improvement over Running Wild, but like Play Dirty, still a very average album. The production is generally the one bad thing which drags this album's overall impression down for me, but there are some solid songs here-namely "Danger Sign" and "Back for More".
Girlschool Take A Bite
The last of the 80s albums from Girlschool, which in all honesty is no better than the previous three records. Just as average, with a couple of decent, solid tunes ("Girls on Top", "Tear It Up") and the same annoying production.

It's average for the most part, certainly, but there are some nice moments to be found here. The solos in "Not alive in my Nightmare" and "Are we so Innocent" are pretty decent, and some songs are obviously better than others. I was expecting more of a prominent latin influence in this album (though I haven't heard any of the band's more recent work), and the monotonous metalcore style is just here to stay, it seems.

Girlschool Running Wild
It started with Play Dirty, the lack of any originality and vigour which made those first three albums so solid, but this seemed to have a full impact on Running Wild. The band at this point sounded really tired, bored with their own musical direction, and that's exactly why songs like "Do You Love Me?" (A Kiss cover but a really poor one nonetheless) and "I Want You Back", proving both lyrically and musically that the band were at a creative low. There are one or two decent tracks here-the title track and "Nowhere to Run" namely-but even they turn out to be average in the grand scheme of things. Certainly Girlschool's worst effort.
