If you are an indie alt rock fan and this album sounds unimpressive to your virgin ears, just keep listening. Some albums are like packs of cigarettes; you're knocked off your feet the first time around, but once you've had a little too much a little too often, the buzz is gone. This album has never been like that. It's a fine wine that get's more magnificent the longer you've been listening to it. It's one of the most nostalgic records I know of, and on many road trips I've had this playing on the car stereo so I could be brought back to those moments during future listens. It's absurd and accessible in all the right places, and by far Pavement's most important album.

The most underrated RATM album by far. If you love 90s hip-hop influences with your metal, you will fucking flip for this album. In my opinion, it's truly their best work, but that might just be because it appeals to my personal taste the most. Song wise, Battle of LA and the debut are more well-structured but not as energetic and fist-thrusting as this album is. This is Rage's most hip hop-oriented record, so rap fans will prefer it.

This album is a permanent marking point in my life for future nostalgia. With such odd originality and contagious hooks, this album completely defeats his last effort in terms of song-writing, although lyrically Mescudi isn't much improved from his previous work. If he had more memorable lyrics, this would be a 5.

It's like every band I've ever fallen in love with decided to collaborate and make a brain-exploding metal album. I hear fucking Radiohead influences adjacent to Alice In Chains song-writing. I'm almost positive Josh Homme had at least an indirect hand in making this album....Just listen to "Curl Of The Burl" and "Thickening". Probably Deftones/Tool and a countless number of bands were used as inspiration. "Octopus Has No Friends" makes me think of Blink-182 and Smash Mouth with some jam-band type riff thrown in... Yeah what the fuck. Everything just sounds so familiar yet there's so much variety, which is great, but I knocked off half a point for some lack of originality. I suppose all of the music we listen to/create has a direct connection to our influences, but it's just way more noticeable to me with this album because I love all of its influences. I'm still racking my brain for a list of bands this sounds like, at least in moments, and I'm pretty sure I'll have at least a dozen pretty soon.

At times it sounds as if someone attacked and abducted Stevie Wonder and forced him to make a punk record. I kind of wish it wasn't so lo-fi that it had to be recorded in mono, but I understand the retro-sounding aesthetic of the music partly relies on it. Misfit fans will likely enjoy this one

I can't quite tell if this LP is a classic by any means, but its damn sure to be on repeat for the next month, so only time will tell. In comparison to other Deftones records, it's difficult to immediately spot too many displays of innovation in their songwriting or production, but I think the band has crafted a top 3 in the scope of their entire discography, nonetheless. GOOD SHIT. |

I gave Treats a 5, and I still stand by that rating. But this album is a disappointment for lacking the infectious first-listen vibes and not making me want to quickly weave through traffic as it plays on the car stereo. I still like this album a good bit, I just think they are putting their sound to use in the wrong places when they could be making incredible songs like they were before. |

Lyrics aside, do you guys not hear some of these hooks? Wiz is a talented chorus-man. I'd say he's right up there with Cudi for being able to work magic over an instrumental. If you're just going to be a whiny-ass rap purist who thinks lyrics determine 80% of an albums quality, then just leave this alone. The music is mostly solid and well produced, the hooks are memorable; what more do you want from a mainstream radio rap album? I don't listen to Fleet Foxes expecting brutal fucking death metal and then say "DIS IS SHITTY AS FUCKBALLZ WHERE R DA YELLINGS AND DOUBLE KICK DRUMS AND HEAVY RIFFAGE? 1/5!!! WORST THING EVR!!" You people have skewed logic, yo.
Wiz Khalifa Kush & Orange Juice
I've listened to this mixtape more than a dozen times, probably a couple dozen would be a better estimation...I never really got to appreciate it until I finally smoked a few bowls and threw it on without "We're Done" and all of the skits included in the playlist. Made it so much more enjoyable, and I realized how great these beats are by themselves.

Although Hexum eased on the lame crooning from the last album that I assume was directed towards his wife in the Pussycat Dolls, this EP-length album still feels too pop for my liking. Hexum is really hindering the band, and honestly there isn't any hope for these guys as they enter their 40s. They can still put on a great live performance.

Tiny Victories Those Of Us Still Alive
Wale Ambition
The album starts strong but gets thrown off by the excessively soft love-related songs. Wale is way better when he raps his social commentary or when he's just spittin mad ignorant shit. 3 or 4 of the songs directed to females could have been done without. Those R&B features are pretty fucking irritating, man...
Weezer Raditude
Weezer Hurley
Wiz Khalifa Deal or No Deal
Wiz Khalifa O.N.I.F.C.
Yelawolf Radioactive
This is actually a pretty big let-down. I expected more tracks like "Hard White" or singles
like "No Hands" and "Gangster of Love". He backtracked to his classic rock/country
influences (heard on earlier mixtapes), which results in some pretty gag-worthy moments.
This whole thing is composed of half filler with the glorious "Throw It Up" tossed in the
middle. That song alone saves the album from being just average. |

good god...cudi's beats could've been made by a 9th grader with fruity loops. someone needs to get him raway from his shoddy laptop production and put him strictly in front of the mic. can't comprehend how rpeople are really digging this shit given how bad it is compared to his first 2 albums

It's not that the songwriting or music in general is weak; there's this high pitched frequency present throughout the vocal parts (probably because of some filter) that I can hear because I'm 19. Older people won't be able to hear the tone but it's like the goddamn mosquito sound and it bugs the shit out of my ears. Bad production move.

Tyga Careless World: Rise of the Last King
With this album, Tyga is trying to make his own Take Care, and he pretty much
succeeds because that album also kind of sucks except this is more mediocre. He even
clearly asked his mom to call and leave a corny insincere "I love you and I'm proud of you"
message so he could put the recording at the end of "Black Crowns". The more tolerable songs
are frontloaded in the beginning, with decent beats for Tyga to sound like a throat cancer
patient with an artificial larynx over. I'd say "Muthafucka Up" is the only song worth
keeping around on a playlist for its beat alone, and that's saying a lot considering it also
has Nicki Minaj aka Ghetto Frankenstein's Bride rapping alongside Tyga for a feature. Here
is a sample of Tyga's "fresh" lyricism from that song for you to think about a moment:
"Niggas softer than baby hair/why you actin tough, heard you work at Build-A-Bear". Guys. I
think Tyga is getting 4th graders to ghostwrite for him. Singles "Faded" and the much
loathed "Rack City" are simplistic and irritating at best, so this album is a good
indication that YMCMB is surely the downfall of rap. To make matters worse, this frisbee
will probably do pretty well on iTunes and Billboard Charts because white kids suck. |
