Corinne Bailey Rae The Love EP
In an age of online romances and speed dating, Corinne Bailey Rae's latest release - a collection of covers unified under a singular "love" theme - seems to be a bit of an anachronism. A grandiose artistic statement it is not, yet Rae's brazen interpretations do manage to turn out some surprisingly pleasant results. Her rehash of Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" is particularly infectious, while the deep, sensual interpretation of "Low Red Moon" goes a long way towards recalling the stunning vistas of a wintry desert at midnight. Indeed, the only real weakness on this compilation is the live performance of "Que Sera Sera", whose 13 minute length makes listening to it a bit of a chore. Although Lennon was probably right when he said that love couldn't possibly have been left behind in the Roaring Sixties, Rae's latest EP does provide strong evidence that it may have taken on a different form since then.

| Solid pop album from a boy band that never really had all that much going for it. Nothing amazing, and the second half of the album really drags (except for the excellent closing number Best In Me). Album was a mild hit when it came out, if I recall correctly. | Blue's sophomore effort is as inoffensive as their debut, yet manages to produce quite a few solid numbers that comfortably cement this record as the 4 x Platinum juggernaut that it is in the UK. Particularly of note is the collaboration with Elton John on "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" - although nowhere near as poignant as the original, the fact that the man himself is willing to be part of this 2003 rehash goes a long way to illustrate that the boys must be doing something right. |

Well, if there's one thing that the band did do very well for this release it's got to be their choice of singles: buoyed by the amazing synth energy atop Here We Are Juggernaut and the phenomenal rock-riffing on World of Lines I splurged on the Limited Deluxe Edition version of this album, expecting more of the same...I was sorely disappointed. The album is extremely front-loaded (the final four or five songs are the worst that Coheed & Cambria have produced as a group), and there's barely a truly remarkable moment on this cohesive - but ultimately uninspired - record. It's by far and away the worst Coheed record around. Only get it to complete your collection, or if the idea of a couple of stylish prog rock songs stacked alongside acceptable filler appeals to you.

Blue Guilty
Blue's final release is sadly rather hard to love - even for folks who find them a guilty (haha - I see what you did there) pleasure. To put it bluntly, the album is barely worth checking out beyond the four tracks that were released to radio (Guilty, Signed, Bubblin', and Breathe Easy). The Webster's Dictionary definition of the word "filler" will lead you to this album, whose lackluster quality ends up a.) doing no justice to the boys' singing talents and b.) ending all hope of the UK four-piece signing off with a bang.

Pink Floyd A Momentary Lapse of Reason
It doesn't sound a thing like the Waters-led years, but it does have its moments (few and far between though they are) - chief among them are On The Turning Away, Learning To Fly, and Sorrow. Terminal Frost is also pretty decent (I also feel that A New Machine's eternal, somber and pensive synth voices work well as an "introduction" and an "ending" to Terminal Frost).rThat said, I find that Gilmour isn't quite talented in writing lyrics for songs - Roger Waters had a point when he said Gilmour's lyrics were very "third-rate". So, despite all the polished performances he (Gilmour) puts in with the electric guitar it's hard for his tracks not to suffer when they're given near-banal lyrics like "The dogs of war don't negotiate/The dogs of war won't capitulate". I'd recommend it for Floyd completists and fans of David Gilmour's works. The casual listener looking for a random decent album might also find a thing or two to like in here.

Fifteen year-old me hated it, and that seriously says a LOT, especially considering that my musical diet at that time was a full course of Britney Spears, a side of Michelle Branch, and lots of N'Sync and Backstreet Boys to wash the whole thing down. Even for a mindless pop album, this one's a mess: too much filler, poor-to-mediocre lyrics, and - above all - too few hooks. Avoid.
