This album is definitely back-heavy, and gets better and better with the last 3 songs. It also definitely cant's
be touched by the new album unfortunately. A Nightmare To Remember has some great parts such as the
middle section. They beat the introductory riff and gothic shit to death throughout the song for far too long
though, and Portnoy's vocal section always elicits a face-palm. A Rite Of Passage is the weakest and lamest
song on the album, and Wither is an okay (if not very tame and generic) ballad. The Shattered Fortress is a
retread of many of the suite's motifs and doesn't bring much that is new and interesting to the table, but I
forgive it because it is still pretty epic and succeeds in the nostalgia department. The Best Of Times is a
great song and gets points for the inherent emotional quality of the subject matter. The Count of Tuscany is
an epic end to the album, with some of the best songwriting, riffs, transitions, instrumental sections and
melodies the band has produced in a long while. I really dig the Rush and King Crimson vibes from the
second half of this album. |

| Pretty sick album that shows a lot of potential. Chris Baretto is an insanely talented vocalist and is the source of most of the album's enjoyability. A number of songs are longer than they ought to be, and as a result the album is too long as a whole. Many songs have their creative and memorable moments but then stagnate too much in less interesting metalcor-ish breakdowns or dent riffage. If they duplicated the overall quality this effort and cut the fat, they would have something truly great. |

One of the key things that allowed me to warm up to the sometimes abrasive/annoying vocals of Rody
Walker were all the damn catchy and memorable vocal lines and the frequency with which new and fresh
sing-alongable melodies were presented.
These stick-in-your-head moments permeate nearly every song of Kezia and Fortress, and are devastatingly
absent in Scurrilous, which leaves their third effort with little redeeming value for me. |

| I can tell this album will grow on me with time. The clean vocal delivery is shaky and timid, which is kind of disappointing to me at the moment. I find the more comfortable-range growls and higher shrieks to be the most palatable here. The deep growls (such as those used in the opening vocals of the title track) don't do it for me because they don't feel as genuine in the midst of such genuine music. One of the things I really like is the layout of the album, with the three dense and long songs separated by the two short, soft pieces! It makes a lot of sense and helps the cohesiveness of the album. |

I just wish Mikael could have at least made an attempt to compose smooth and musical transitions between
sections. For example, "I Feel The Dark" has a ton of abrupt and awkward lurches between vastly different
sections. This kind of writing technique is common in progressive music, and has a place in Opeth's music,
but this album contains lazy amounts of crossfade transitions between unrelated musical ideas. That said,
on a first listen there is a lot to digest and there are already some identifiably solid moments. |

| The very first time I heard the Autotheist suite I went "Wait, this is Devin Townsend riffage... okay now an attempt at Devin Townsend vocals... oh shit now it's a latter Opeth mellotron interlude? Ooh that is some tasty guitar tone... Is that a Mikael Akerfeldt guest solo?rTo be honest, "Devin Townsend mixed with Opeth" would at first sound like a potential incredible thing... but not when it is so blatantly derivative and separated/exposed (here is the Devin section, and now the Opeth section etc). This album is pretty underwhelming. |

The formula of rhythmic chuggy riffs with Johannes' growls, followed by open chords or harmonized guitars
and Sabine's clean singing (repeat) gets tiresome. I understand that isn't outside the norm for the style of
music, but it doesn't make it any less predictable or weary.
Loser's Ballet sounds like a Dimmu Borgir impersonation and doesn't much fit with the metalcore/melodic
death metal sound of the rest of the album. Lastly, I am rarely interested in lyrics but they are quite bad in
a readily apparent and consistent fashion here. "Oh how I wish that I could die, You faggot you ruined the
code of honor "... seriously come on.
Otherwise, it is a collection of decently harmless songs (with beautiful singing from Sabine of course). |

| Someday this will likely become a 3 for me, but no more. To me this is an awkward transition phase for Katatonia where they hadn't quite found their stride with the new direction. Nixing the harsh vocals left Renske having to rely on his weak clean vocal delivery. He sounds timid and unsure of himself as he struggles to hit notes quietly, which is different than sounding melancholic. rLater releases show him projecting and singingly more confidently and intensely while still being melancholic and soft. He never belts it, really, but at this point his vocal abilities weren't there yet and this album suffers for it for me.rThe songwriting and the riffs, while good, just doesn't seem the be up to the solid and memorable level of later releases. |

I haven't even finished the first song so I cannot comment on the content, but my god the
production/recording quality is shit. It sounds like they botched all the guitar recordings and just tried to
cover up the unintentional clipping fuzz and distortion. |

At best, a few songs sound like they could cut it as a half-way decent Misery Signals tracks. The rest are
wrought with very generic breakdowns and often skirt around bro-core garbage territory. These guys
need to choose who they want their audience to be, either bro moshers or people who want 2nd-tier Misery
Signals knockoffs, and stick with it. |

| It's too bad the songs and songwriting is so uninteresting and mediocre, because just about everything else is really awesome. There is a lot of potential in this band and their sound if they take it in the right direction, drop some of the bullshit metalcore trope crap, and start writing better songs. |
