Black Emperor may be the greatest post rock group of all time, producing album after album of epic, intriguing and unique post rock and this album is no exception. I like to refer to Godspeed as 'the classical musicians of post-rock' as they produce epic after epic of some of the most sprawling and sometimes unpredictable music ive ever heard. Having said that, the one minor complaint i have is sometimes they take it a little too far and are a little too pretentious where an idea is dragged on a bit too far or they come up with something completely outlandish which makes me think how in the hell do they come up with this stuff or what their thinking was behind it. Oddly enough however, thats part of the appeal with GSY!BE which makes them one of if not the most interesting groups ive ever heard. Whilst they may not be perfect, with albums such as this and what i consider to be the best EP ever made Slow Riot being some of the best post rock albums you can listen to. Theres no doubt that Godspeed have cemented themselves as one of the best and most influential post rock groups ever formed, and my personal favourite.Godspeed You! Almost 10 years later im sit here with a very different taste of music, being a metalhead and prog rock lover and a hater of pretty much anything rap, and yet RATM are still one of the most original sounding bands ive heard, and one of the best. Considering i cant stand rap, Zack de la Rocha continues to impress me, his politically charged rapping isnt just catchy, its one of the reasons which make RATM very unique, the other reason is quite obvious, Tom Morello. His Funky soloing and riffing has the reminiscence of metal, hard rock, punk and funk all in one, his solo's are particularly eye striking. Overall in the era of rap-rock groups such as linkin park, ICP and Limp Bizkit only one really stands tall, one is the original, one is the best. I give you Rage against the machine, by far one of the best bands of the 90's.Rosetta The Galilean SatellitesRosetta Wake/LiftRush HemispheresRush Clockwork AngelsSacramentum Far Away from the SunSatyricon Dark Medieval TimesThis is quite simply put, one of the most essential black metal albums out there. But what makes this album better than the likes of mono, godspeed, sigur ros and explosions in the sky? Quite simply put: this album doesnt drag, EVER.rFull of lusicious melodys, high crescendos, haunting violins and some of the best build ups ive ever heard in post rock, not one single instrument or melody which is out of place or doesnt feel right. Every single second of this album is worth while. Add that and then you have the single greatest moment ive ever heard in post rock around the 10 min mark of 'we flood empty lakes', a climax which never fails to make my spine tingle, my heart pound and make my legs feel weak in pure extascy, emotion and joy and then you have an album which may not be a pioneer or the most original post rock album out there but an album which is the cream of the crop in post rock.4.0 excellentAddaura Burning for the AncientAdversarial All Idols Fall Before the HammerAgalloch Of Stone, Wind, and PillorAgalloch Ashes Against The GrainAgalloch The WhiteAlcest Les Voyages De L AmeSo what do ya know....Alcest made an album which sounds like Alcest.Amia Venera Landscape The Long ProcessionComing in Late in 2010, Amia Venera Landscape's debut The Long Procession is definitely something special. Its very easy to compare this albums sound to other bands and genres in parts and certainly is not short of influences, however this album to me is simply genreless. Whilst this album is a bit too long (albeit, the ambient passages) and is lacking a little in cohesion, Amia Venera Landscape have a unique sound which is not too commonly replicated in a debut. With The Long Procession being a lot to take in, i wouldnt be surprised if this grew on me more with several more listens. Top 10 of 2010.Amon Amarth With Oden On Our SideAmon Amarth always prove that you dont have to be nessecarily technical and complex to make great music, this album is Brutal, melodic, extremely catchy and makes u sing along for days! a must have for melodic death metal fans like me.Amon Amarth Twilight Of The Thunder GodAmon Amarth continue doing what they do best, nothing really to add, theres nothing really nothing new except the fantastic music we have come to expect. 'Across the Dark' shows Insomnium expanding their sound and whilst its comfortably familiar, it sounds fresh and new. The epic leads, serene atmosphere, beautifully executed acoustics and crushing vocals are still present, Insomnium also have taken a more lead way to emotionally driven piano pieces and a very well placed violin piece at the beginning of the closer 'Weighted down with sorrow'. The clean vocals being the most talked about aspect of the album is surpringsly well executed and well placed with the tremendously upbeat chorus of 'Where the last wave broke' being a highlight of a once again extremely atmospheric, epic, serene and emotional album. 'The Lay of Autumn' is possibly the most progressive song Insomnium have done with the inclusion of clean vocals and interchanging between acoustics and hard driven riffs. Finally 'Against the stream' is possibly the best song to date of this year with some amazing riff work and the most melodic and fast paced since their debut. The second half of the song may rightly be compared to Last Statement and is one of the most beautiful outros to a song ive heard in ages. Octavarium has a very weird mixture of songs. The Root of all Evil and the Answer Lies Within are very Average tracks at best, Thankfully These Walls picks the album up and is a very good track. This leads on to by far the worst track on the album I walk beside you which sounds like a horrible tribute to Muse, downright awful. Panic Attack then picks up from where These Walls was good and produces a great track to the album. But its the last 2 songs which bumps up the rating. Sacrificed Sons is one the most emotionally driven DT songs ever done about Terrorism and War, its an exceptional song which gives the album some lease of life. The climax song Octavarium is an absolutely amazing closing track and possibly the best DT song ive heard. Its not short of influences like Pink Floyd and Rush however its defo still DT. The solo by Petrucci at the end is immense, filled with so much emotion and passion and proves Petrucci is not all about speed and technical ability, he still remains one of my favourite guitarists out there. Its just a shame the rest of the album doesnt live up to the final 2 tracks.Dream Theater A Dramatic Turn of EventsAlbum isnt really a dramatic turn of events so to speak. The traditional black metal tremolo-picking riffs are still there and the production is still in the vain Vikernes' earlier work. However Belus is an album which shows the signs of a Burzum that has evolved and moved on with the times. The album as a whole is very much riff based and has distinct lack of ambience from the previous releases, whilst that takes out the fact that sometimes in the past Vikernes went a bit overboard with it, it does take out a unique factor which made Burzum so prominent. The Longer songs on this album tend to drag on too long especially the 11 min 'Glemselens Elv'. Vikernes doesn't seem to have the ability like he did on Hvis Lyset Tar Oss to produce a song over 10 mins with only 3 or 4 riffs used at a time to really work. Despite this however there are positives to take out this album, the amount of melody is very surprising and un-burzum like but comes across as a breath of fresh air and something new and inspiring to the Burzum sound. The focus and engagement of riffs has certaintly allowed Vikernes to come up with some new riffs, a couple i never thought he would be capable of producing and implementing in an album to make it work. The harsh vocals do seem to lose some of that unique edge, but are solid nonetheless. Overall Vikernes has nothing to be ashamed of, he said he was gonna produce a black metal album and a Burzum album of 2010 and he certaintly did. A solid and a bit surprising album, but still one in the shadows of his previous work.Camel CamelCoheed and Cambria The Second Stage Turbine BladeThis album proves that coheed in their pop-punk/post hardcore direction does not work. It is way too light and proves claudio's vocals to be annoying on this album as well as underdeveloped. Overrated, however this does show a sign of things to come for the development of Coheed's sound.Coheed and Cambria Year of the Black RainbowCynic Traced in AirDark Tranquillity We Are The VoidDeerhunter Halcyon DigestDestroyer KaputtDissection ReinkaosDream Theater Six Degrees of Inner TurbulenceDrudkh Eternal Turn of the WheelEisley The ValleyEminem RecoveryEvery Time I Die Ex LivesEvoken Antithesis of LightExplosions in the Sky How Strange, InnocenceFallujah The Harvest WombsFang Island Fang IslandFlourishing The Sum of All FossilsFlyleaf FlyleafForest Like a Blaze Above the AshesGnostic Engineering the RuleGorod A Perfect AbsolutionImmolation Kingdom of ConspiracyImmortal Sons of Northern DarknessIncantation Primordial DominationJames Blake James BlakeJob for a Cowboy Ruinationwell its an improvement on the borefest that was genesis and the downright horrible Doom. Yet despite the heavy Meshuggah influence and chugging, Periphery expand beyond that, way beyond that with futuristic electronic beats and atmosphere, capitivating intertwined melodies and some of the best clean sections you will hear all year. It is true that Periphery wear some of their influences on their sleeve but they do not go into the realms of a carbon copy, using their influences in a sophiscated way, creating an album which has the feeling of familiarity but also the notion of innovation and uniqueness. Periphery, hopefully have a long and bright future ahead of them.Peste Noire L'Ordure a l'etat PurPorcupine Tree SignifyPorcupine Tree DeadwingPorcupine Tree Up the DownstairPorcupine Tree The Sky Moves SidewaysPulling Teeth FuneraryRise Against EndgameScar Symmetry Dark Matter DimensionsThe departure of Christian Alvestam brought about questions about Scar Symmetry's future. 2009 sees that they do have the potential to be better without Christian, however a year after Holographic Universe, Dark Matter Dimensions feels like a rushed affair. Some songwriting elements especially with the clean verses are in need of serious repair and ruins some aspects of most of the songs. However some solid growls, clean choruses and solos in the most part save this album from being a complete disaster. 'The Iconcolast' particular shows that Scar Symmetry have the potential to take their sound to the next level. One must feel if they took more time working on their songwriting, focused the solos more on the emotions of the song like their past albums instead of the technical wankfest in this album and worked on the clean singing verses that this could have been a serious success, there are some truly outstanding and memorable moments in this album if one has the patience to listen in full . However what we are left with is a band looking to fufil the potential they have created themselves after the departure of their original vocalist. Maybe the next album is where they pull everything together.Sigur Ros BrennisteinnSkillet ComatoseSlayer World Painted BloodSlipknot SlipknotSlipknot Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)Something Corporate Leaving Through The WindowSteven Wilson InsurgentesStorm Corrosion Storm CorrosionStructures All of the AboveSuffocation Blood OathTalk Talk Laughing StockThe Absence Riders of the PlagueThe Chariot One WingThe Dear Hunter RedThe Decemberists The TainThe Gaslight Anthem The 59 SoundThis or the Apocalypse Dead YearsThomas Giles PulseThree Days Grace One-XTouche Amore Parting The Sea Between Brightness And MeTriumvirat Illusions On A Double DimpleWaxahatchee Cerulean Salt2.5 averageAfter the Burial In DreamsIts a shame to see a band with much potential fall by the way side and that is the case with After the Burial. Gone are the inventive leads, solos and progressive leanings once written in rareform. Instead ATB have embraced the meshuggah tendecies which were tasteful in rareform which have become the forefront of In Dreams. Unfortunately whilst their songwriting has definitely become more consistent, they fail to build on their new direction and become lost in a sea of mediocre and boring meshuggah-esque chugging, polyrythms and juns. ATB could of made this work, whilst the vocals are still as kick ass as ever, they fail to deliver any long lasting memorable moments like presented in rareform: in short, theres nothing that stands out as anything but average and the uniqueness they once had in rareform is almost non-existent. And don't get me started on the breakdowns...not only are they generic as hell, they are bad...bad placement, bad execution, bad everything, they make no impact and are laughable, it would be better to take then out altogether.Anathema JudgementAngels and Airwaves I-EmpireAnnotations Of An Autopsy II: The Reign of DarknessAugust Burns Red MessengersAvenged Sevenfold Sounding the Seventh TrumpetBaroness Blue RecordBlut Aus Nord 777 - Sect(s)Breaking Benjamin Dear Agonybreaking benjamin rehash the same old shit they always ever did... evidence that mainstream rock is more watered down than ever.Bullet For My Valentine The PoisonBullet For My Valentine Scream, Aim, FireCeremony Violence ViolenceChildren of Bodom Relentless Reckless ForeverCormorant MetazoaCradle of Filth Bitter Suites to SuccubiCult of Luna VertikalCynic FocusDecapitated Carnival Is ForeverDethklok Dethalbum IIDevil Sold His Soul A Fragile HopeDimmu Borgir Death Cult ArmageddonDismember The God That Never WasDivine Heresy Bringer of PlaguesDream Theater Systematic ChaosEnslaved VertebraeGreen Day American IdiotGrimes VisionsHigh on Fire De Vermis MysteriisIn Flames Reroute to RemainIn Flames Soundtrack to Your EscapeIselia Life From Dead LimbsJob for a Cowboy DemonocracyMetallica LoadMnemic Sons Of The SystemMono Hymn To The Immortal WindNeutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the SeaNightwish Dark Passion PlayNile IthyphallicOpeth HeritagePorcupine Tree Stupid DreamProtest the Hero Scurrilousfor the most part, a huge pile of meh. However whilst i respect that, i do not get what is so special about this album. Whilst this album does share notable characteristics with modern post rock, whatever promising moments there are in this album are washed away by a sea of mediocrity, overdrawn and boring repetitiveness not to mention a horribly annoying voice. The fact that this helped spawn some of the best post rock bands around is the only reason why this album holds any resemblence in my opinion. They could of exploited the synth and keyboards to add more atmosphere but it adds nothing to the music. Dissappointing in some ways but not in others seeing the reputation they have at the moment. The Devil Wears Prada Dead Throneill admit the new TWDP has a few nice ideas and the shouting vocals are a nice variation and change but other than that its still another average TWDP album. A great example of this is DEP's latest which actually turns out to be a success and imo their best and most complete work. This change of sound however from Architects absolutely fails not only to improve the sound of the band in general but fails to succeed in what it wants to achieve. In essence, this album sounds like Architects trying to be a post-hardcore band, rather than a band actually becoming one. This new direction definitely does not suit this band one bit and although their old technical metal style was not particularly breath-taking, they would definitely be better off reinventing that sound rather than trying to take on a completely new sound which does not work for them.
