Gospel The Moon is A Dead World
Whereas As the Roots Undo is a masterpiece in the sense that it is just saturated in raw emotion, The Moon is a Dead World takes pride in the fact that it is literally perfect in every conception of the word. The intricate and progressive intrumentation is unsurpassed in this genre, and the album's tenacity and cohesiveness make this an incredible musical experience.

Worship Dooom
Arguably one of the best doom albums ever released, Worship's Dooom has been in cultivation since the untimely suicide of one half of the duo, 'Fukked Up Mad Max' Varnier. The Doommonger (Daniel Pharos) continued on with what they together had begun, and has constructed an album that is the epitome of sorrow, of anguish, and of death.

Patti Smith Horses
Considered the 'godmother' of punk rock, Patti Smith's 1975 release of Horses was a defining point in the punk rock explosion of the 70s. No where near as abrasive as the punk acts that would follow it due to its heavy grounding in rock music, Smith's talent at writing catchy and enjoyable songs is unparalleled. Her vicious undertones give the album another sense of appeal, and it's easy to see how this album influenced an entire generation.

The Carrier No Love Can Save Me
No Love Can Save Me may be only three songs, but each of them is literally brimming with energy, leaving the EP as a ten minute journey through the very best that emotional hardcore can offer. Each song feels almost perfect; the production is crisp and clean, the instrumentation?s clarity not being diminished in moments of chaos. Vocalist Anthony is one of the better performers you will hear from the genre; his screams are typical of the hardcore sound but fit almost perfectly with the direction of the music, be it disarray or melody that the band is aiming for. It?s a remarkably short listen, but its force is not lessened in any way by its length. A great precursor to the band?s follow up full length.

Ehnahre The Man Closing Up
An experimental death/doom album that exudes a dark and torturous atmosphere, Ehnahres The Man Closing Up is a fine example of how the often stale genre can prove to be exciting. The heavier parts of the record are simply fantastic, and the way they meld in and out of claustrophobic ambience is very well executed. Nevertheless, one sometimes feels that the experimental side of the album has gotten out of hand playing silence for several minutes in the aim of creating atmosphere just doesnt bode well for an albums longevity.

Although claims of the 'next big thing' may be somewhat exaggerated, there's no doubt that Lisa Mitchell's debut full length comprises of everything that is good about her chirpy and lovable brand of pop folk. The subtlety of the pop aesthetic has just the right amount of weight to make it a worthy listen as a complete record, and the progression from her excellent Welcome to the Afternoon EP is fantastic.

Mournful Gust The Frankness Eve
Although conforming with typical death/doom expectations, Ukraine's Mournful Gust are at the forefront of the genre. Their first album since their debut in 2000, The Frankness Eve is a limitless supply of great death/doom. Thick and throaty gutturals, fantastic singing, and a constant hint at Eastern European music throughout the various melodies contained in the album, this is one of the better death/doom albums you'll hear. If you enjoy Inborn Suffering, Mourning Beloveth, DOOM:VS, Morgion or Hanging Garden, this is an album not to be missed.

I found this album a lot more accessible than the first Necrophagist album, mainly due to the fact it had proper instruments, rather than drum and bass samples (don't quote me on that, but I do know there were samples). It just sounded as if the whole thing was written on Guitar Pro or something. That is why I like this album a lot more, I find it much more accessible. On the whole, a very good album. But I do agree with a comment for the review, the technical work may be amazing but in terms of song-writing Necrophagist still have a way to go.

Nettlethrone Dissonant Progression
Nettlethrone are a Turkish death metal band, and Dissonant Progression is their debut album. Borrowing heavily from newer acts such as The Black Dahlia Murder and combining this with the style of melodic death introduced by European bands like At the Gates, Nettlethrone manage to shape their own sound and identity. A mixture of melody and brutality sums up Dissonant Progression, and while the band conforms to most modern death metal trends, they do not fall into the mire that is deathcore. Tracks such as 'Preaching The Crisis Discipline' are exhilarating and really give the album a fine edge. Although very short, this was perhaps a wise decision on behalf of the band; dragging out an already very common style would not have bode well for the overall effect of the album. Acoustic interludes also crop up amongst the tracks, however it was unfortunate that neither the acoustic nor the normal tracks had any influence of traditional Turkish music; a Middle-Eastern flavour to some of these tracks would have been fantastic. Nonetheless, a solid and enjoyable melodic death album.

A spindly, and at first seemingly disconnected album, Fall of Troy's Doppelganger is an intricate and superbly crafted album that takes pride in it's less than subtle changes of pace and tempo, which make for a chaotic and disorderly listen. But in a good way. The beauty of the album is that it still retains melody, accessibility, and sheer heaviness throughout its 11 songs, without submitting to order, or predictability.

Vespers Descent Reality Dysfunction
Although being a relatively small contingent, the local metal scene of Perth, Western Australia, has produced some rather appealing albums, Pathogen's Bloodline for example. Vespers Descent are of a similar camp to Pathogen and others, such as Malignant Monster, but differ in that they can be likened far more to more international and popular death metal bands. Their first album, 2005's Visions in Verse, was reasonably successful, and coupled with the band's tightly executed live act, created a name for the band amongst the city's small metal community. They return in 2008 with a simple, yet ferociously good EP, Reality Dysfunction. With a slathering of good riffing, all glazed with a delicate touch of melody, Reality Dysfunction is 4 songs that definitely worth hearing. The vocals on the EP are very good, at a moderate depth and constantly decipherable. The band show off their influences with a cover of At the Gates' 'Blinded by Fear', and to be honest do an as good as, if not better, job of it than At the Gates did in 1995. To finish off the EP, the band give us a warm and melancholic acoustic outro in 'Eclipse', which was a very nice touch. Definitely a band to keep your eye on.

Gauge Means Nothing The Absent Trail of an Echo...
Although incorporating some unusual and interesting arrangements, Gauge Means Nothing's EP is a rather mixed bag. The inclusion of a female vocalist who resembles something out of a J-pop song is amusing at first, but quickly deteriorates into something terribly annoying. Instances where her voice seems to 'work' are quite good, but these are very rare. Her high pitched whining during sections of 'My Glasses Reflect An Untrue View On My Eyes' are simply grating on the ears. An element of progression can be found within the music, and on the whole the album is musically very appealing. The longer tracks, 'Pilgrim' and '(Surely) Dyes Black' are sublime in showing off the band's ability at putting together a decent composition. A higher score would have been warranted had it not been for the hit or miss female vocals, and the very bad male cleans. If you can stand J-pop, this might be the emo album for you.

Lene Marlin Twist the Truth
Twist the Truth does well to fill its mellow rock mold, and Marlin truly has a spectacular voice, but as a collection of songs the albums slow pace definitely detracts from its appeal. Tracks like the moving Here We Are and Have I Ever Told You stand out from among the somewhat unmemorable other takes, and its purely on the strength of the few that the album manages to remain enjoyable. A little more excitement and vigour in her music would definitely be a positive step for Marlin as a songwriter.

Mourning Beloveth A Murderous Circus
Although being Mourning Beloveth's weakest record, A Murderous Circus still retains that melodic touch that has become a signature for the band. However, the songs have been dragged out a fair bit when compared to their other albums, and does leave the impression that A Murderous Circus is needlessly bloated. Frank Brennan's clean vocals are quite varied, to the extent that it just feels like he's trying to be different. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it was good to see that he refined himself further for his vocal performance on A Disease for the Ages. Moore's gutturals, as per usual, are fantastic. A Murderous Circus represents perhaps a lag in Mourning Beloveth's stellar career, but this is not to say it is a bad album. Nevertheless, this should be the last one you pick up.

Agalloch Ashes Against the Grain
While opener 'Limbs' is an incredibly solid track, Ashes Against the Grain falters in its necessity to hold the listener's attention. Second track 'Falling Snow' is the perfect example of this particular weakness; the track does not have the mysterious aura that normally comes with Agalloch's music, and is left as a rather contrived effort alongside the much better previous track. 'Fire Above, Ice Below' sits in between the aforementioned tracks in terms of quality, but its similarity to the 'She Painted Fire Across the Skyline' trilogy from Pale Folklore, especially in its clean sections, leaves one thinking whether Agalloch have more than the one trick up their sleeves. Nevertheless, this track and the following 'Not Unlike the Waves' are good songs without a critical comparison; it is in the album's attempt at replicating an epic three part song as done in Pale Folklore which ultimately brings the album down. The three parts are somewhat bland, and do not have the cohesiveness that one would expect from a talented and mature band such as Agalloch. The pinnacle of the album's failure is that it does not offer anything, other than the odd song or two, which would lead me to prefer it over any of Agalloch's other albums; a crucial failure, in my opinion, seeing as how little the band's sound has progressed over their discography.

Bilocate Sudden Death Syndrome
It's hard not to feel that Bilocate are doing the right thing with their music; there is a certain amount of intricacy that hangs over them, largely due to the subtle Middle-Eastern influences that poke their way around the composition (a natural result, seeing as the band is from Jordan). However, Bilocate is not able to capitalise upon Sudden Death Syndrome's unique musical standpoint and this unfortunately leaves the album as a rather bland and tiresome piece of music to get through. Being death/doom, slower tempos are plentiful, but Bilocate do not extend any of their climaxes to the point where they leave any sort of impression, marking their sophomore effort as largely unmemorable. The album opens with a 17 minute track, and one can hear everything the band has to offer within these 17 minutes. Even so, sticking out for the full length of the song is no easy task; the band all too often wallows in synthy-ambience driven passages that just detract from its death/doom appeal. Had they been few and far between, perhaps some more excitement could be generated, but in general one's just left waiting for something (anything) stimulating to happen while listening to Sudden Death Syndrome.

Isis Wavering Radiant
Isis has done to post metal what Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky have been doing to post rock; in other words, Wavering Radiant is the final stagnation of the genre, where old ideas are re-used without any progression or advancement. The majority of Wavering Radiant is a tedious exercise in texturing, where the listener is left wallowing in various soundscapes listening vainly for something interesting to happen. Several moments definitely were attention-grabbing, but for the most part the record is a snooze.

The Vasco Era Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside
After the brilliant Miles EP, I was expecting a lot from this hyped up Melbournian trio. I was very disappointed. No longer was Sid as insanely good as he was on the EP, his performance seems less spontaneous and perhaps a little conservative in hopes of being more appealing. Gone was the forceful aggression I had previously associated with The Vasco Era; all that this album has is a mixture of soft moments with fuzzy, dirty, dull guitar tunes. To be honest, there weren't any memorable moments whatsoever on the CD. Here's hoping they'll pull their act together for any future releases.

Overrated sputnik black/folk metal album #264, rivaling Wolves in the Throne Room in terms of blandness, Mourning Dawn in forced atmosphere and Wyrd in mediocrity. Black Moss is the only track that stands out with respect to compositional endeavor, while the rest of the album melts away into dull riffs and monotonous vocals.
Wolves in the Throne Room Black Cascade
It's unfortunate that with such a strong premise behind them, Wolves in the Throne still managed to make what is essentially a dull and uninteresting record with The Black Cascade. The promise that they showed on their debut Diadem of 12 Stars began to dissipate immediately with their next record, and their recently released EP Malevolent Grain, along with the album in question, were the final steps in their descent into mediocrity. The Black Cascade is far more of a straight black metal album than the bands previous efforts, and even where their initial atmospherics werent all that great, their absence is sorely noted; the four tracks on the record are nothing but bland tremolo riffing going through various progressions, both tedious and emotionless. There is nothing that really distinguishes any of the songs, and they go past at an extraordinarily slow pace. Ultimately, its the sort of album that you just cant wait to finish and forget.

Jeff Buckley Grace
Everyone makes a big fuss over Jeff Buckley. He is probably one of the most overrated musicians in history. So many people make the excuse 'oh, if he hadn't died, who knows what great music he could have made!'. It's a shame he did die, but all we should judge him on is what he has made, not what he could have made.
I found Grace to be an incredibly boring album, and it agitates me to see so people crooning over it's supposed greatness. Hallelujah is probably the only decent song on the album (and not even his), the rest of the songs are just mediocre.
I'll admit, Buckley has a decent voice, but he's just one of many. His voice, and his musical talents, aren't extraordinary in any shape or form, and I highly disagree with any notions of it being a 'classic' album. It's an average effort from an average musician.

Obscura Cosmogenesis
Blatant Necrophagist and Cynic worship with a little added melody and a supposed level of progression leaves Cosmogenesis as not only a mess of an album, but puts Obscura in a very unstable position, one in which they try their very best to imitate all their influences and come off as nothing but a poor clone of numerous bands. The fact that they aren't anywhere near as technical as the bands they try to replicate throws them onto thin ice, and the thieving bastards shouldn't think that they can get away with stealing Cynic's robotic vocals without anybody noticing. On top of that, the gutturals are nothing short of irritating. Funnily enough, the single track worth listening to is the instrumental, Orbital Elements, if only for its sufficiency in imitation and its lack of vocals.

The Faceless Planetary Duality
Although maintaining a smidgen of integrity with Akeldema, The Faceless have basically thrown away any notion of being appealing or original with Planetary Duality. It would be unwise to label them as completely untalented because they are very apt at playing their instruments, but this doesn't make up for their obvious lack of talent in writing a good song. Not a single memorable track can be found amongst the countless weedle-dee-dees, chugga chugs and chugga-pause-chuggaweedle-pause-weedleweedlechugs. To add to its own woes, the drumming is ridiculous, and not in the good sense. One can derive something of an impression from the analogy of drilling multiple holes into your own skull. And the robot vocals? Pretty sure Cynic did that far better, 15 years ago. Average songwriting, average vocals, average everything, and the technicality doesn't make up for it.

From the usual boring riffs, boring breakdowns, to the uninspired 'melody', the album reeks copycat. The final straw for me was the complete rip-off of At the Gates' Blinded by Fear on the intro riff of the song Sleepless Nights and City Lights. Butcher does well as a vocalist, his range is quite impressive, but his talent is brought down by the rest of the bland and characterless dribble.
Mors Principium Est The Unborn
Watered down, fuzzy, and absolutely generic, Mors Principium Est's The Unborn epitomises all that is wrong with modern melodic death.
My Chemical Romance Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
Queens Of The Stone Age Era Vulgaris
Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy Themes
Under the guise of melancholic and doom-inspired, Silent Stream of Godless Elegy's Themes creates the illusion that it will be something dark, sincere and very involving. Themes, unfortunately, is none of these things. Comprised of poor vocals, cringe-worthy melodies, and terrible musical choices, the album is a typical example of the general mediocrity that surrounds the whole folk metal genre, as well as all of its offshoots (folk/doom, folk/black). An album to avoid.

I Killed The Prom Queen When Goodbye Means Forever
Sorry for going against the review that was already up, but I had to say something.
A very generic album from a very generic band is the best way to sum up When Goodbye Means Forever by I Killed the Prom Queen.
I own the more recent Music for the Recently Deceased, and I admit that I did listen to it a few times. It has a little attraction in it, mainly due to the diversity of the vocalist. That brings us back the When Goodbye Means Forever. Is there any variation whatsoever in the vocals? It's either the same sounding growls, or quite uninviting clean vocals. The vocals really put me off this album.
Secondly, the songs. When I first got my hands on a copy of the cd, I listened to it about twice before putting it down and not listening to it again.
It seems that listening to this album is like listening to one song that goes for just over 40 minutes. Straight to the point, every song sounds like the one before. Every breakdown sounds repeated, even the lyrics are repeated over and over again, and this makes it one very tedious album to listen to.
The one highlight of the album, which I keep in my top rated section on the off chance I feel like listening to it, is Pointed to My Heart. The song overall is quite poor, but that one melodic tune that it contains stopped me from giving this album a 1.
I do not recommend this album. If you do have the urge for some Australian hardcore, Parkway Drive (although being similar stuff) is much better. The vocalist for the last IKTPQ album is much better than the one on When Goodbye Means Forever, which makes this album obselete.
