Against Me! Reinventing Axl Rose
Only rivaled by London Calling as the greatest album ever in my eyes. 'Reinventing Axl Rose', Against Me!'s first set of songs with a full band, is one of the most original and passionate albums from any band. The six songs that first appeared on either 'Crime' or the 'Acoustic EP' translate electric perfectly and the rest are some of best songs the band has written, filled with energy and emotion. It would be impossible to pinpoint a specific highlight here, but the moving acoustic 8 Full Hours of Sleep is lyrically one of the bands finest moments. Tom Gabel's lyrics are at his best with inspiring songs about friendship, political beliefs and the solidarity of a show. No, Against Me! have not topped this and will not, but I can listen to these eleven songs over and over again and it doesn't even matter.
Attack in Black (Years) By One Thousand Fingertips
Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks
Built To Spill There's Nothing Wrong with Love
GZA Liquid Swords
Modest Mouse The Moon & Antarctica
Propagandhi Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes
Almost sounding like a different band as oppose to their first two albums; Louder, heavier, faster and angrier, on TETA Propagandhi loses much of the satirical tone in place of some of heavier political themes but make the transision smoothly to say the least. Their thrash influences shine more than ever with some of their heaviest riffs yet not to mention some outstanding guitar solos (hear Purina Hall of Fame, Back To The Motor League). Intelligent, thought out socially aware and left lyrics and some subtle humor in classic Propagandhi fasion, this is the pinnacle of political punk. Simply put, just flat out awesome, filler-free, a modern punk classic.

Bedouin Soundclash Sounding A Mosaic
Bedouin Soundclash's sophomore album (though many would guess its their first) 'Sounding A Mosaic' is just a near perfect album from an underrated band. Though it's reggae at its core, 2tone, soul, drum & bass, ska and punk influences shine through complete with Jay's passionate, fragile and indeed unique vocals making for a truly refreshing sound. Here the Canadian trio make an album posessing soulful, emotional vocals, soothing and vibrant basslines and basic yet precise drumming. But there is so much more to it; whether it be the acoustic strumming intro to Jeb Rand, guest vocalist Vernon Maytone on Money Worries, or dub remixes that close the album. Not to mention the lyrics that show the bands intelligence of the music, social issues, and ability to tell detailed and interesting stories.
Billy Bragg Back to Basics
Simply one of the best 'one man and his guitar approach' albums I've heard. "Back To Basics" compiles most of Billy Bragg's early work onto one convienient album. Strongly opinionated and politically outspoken, Bragg's lyrics are the focal point of his music as he sings about his far left views and anything socially unjust in his eyes with intelect and meaning but can also churn out poetic love songs, including The Man in the Iron Mask, one of his finest tunes. And his raw, unpolished acoustic guitar is also unique and excellent. Other highlights include: To Have and To Have Not, St. Swithin's Day and The Milkman Of Human Kindness.

Jawbreaker Dear You
Though not as raw as their previous releases, Jawbreaker's major label debut and final album ranks as one of the finest from the decade in my eyes. Blake's deeply personal and poetic lyrics are at his best and what initially drew me into Dear You. Most tracks are slower tempo but tracks like 'Bad Scene Everyone's Fault' and 'Save Your Generation' sound like Jawbreaker of old albeit slightly more refined. A classic album full of introspective, relatable lyrics and memorable songs for a fitting end to an incredible and sometimes overlooked band's career.

Highlights: Chemistry, Jet Black, Accident Prone, Fireman, Sluttering (May 4th)
Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros Streetcore
Minutemen Double Nickels On the Dime
Modest Mouse The Lonesome Crowded West
Modest Mouse This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To..

Propagandhi How to Clean Everything
Propagandhi's debut certainly sounds like no other album they've put out. Not as techical instrumentally, and the poppier (yet full of attitiude) of the four albums they have, 'How To Clean Everything' is probably the most satirical and most comparable album to labelmates NOFX. But this is a near classic punk album. Not a sub par song here with anthems like Anti-Manifesto and Middle Finger Response, the classic anti-ska ska song, Ska Sucks, the reggae-ish Haillie Sellasse, ...',not to mention the hilarious closing cover song with a slightly altered title. Essential punk rock.
Propagandhi Potemkin City Limits
Rancid ...And Out Come The Wolves
Shotgun Jimmie The Onlys
Social Distortion Prison Bound
Prison Bound, Social D's second album, came after a five year hiatus from their debut that is 1983's Mommy's Little Monster. It is evident that in those 5 years a lot happened to the band, but significantly frontman Mike Ness, that would change Social D's style. Their debut album was a straight forward punk classic with not much diversity. Prison Bound, however, shows a different side to the band. It features more of a rockabilly tone taking influence from the likes of Johnny Cash, The Stones, and Hank Williams but the punk is still strong and vibrant. This newer sound would increase to the next album, self titled, and then reach its peak on 1992's Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell. But Prison Bound offers the perfect balence bewteen the two styles. It is clear that the band hasn't lost its ability to play fast punk rock shown in songs such as It's The Law and Indulgence. It is also noteable that the title track and Lost Child are some of the band's finest songs, and indeed emotional lyrically. Prison Bound is a solid punk album with every track having something to offer, making it one of the finest punk albums of the 80s.

The Tragically Hip Yer Favourites
The Tragically Hip have always been loyal to their fans. Never really straying away from their Canadian themed rock and roll for nearly two decades now, playing even the smaller cities on tour, and now, even letting their fans pick 'their favorites' in an online poll for an upcoming anthology, aptly titled 'Yer Favorites'. In 2005, the same year they were inducted into the Candian Music Hall of Fame, The Hip released their first retrospective collection of songs that spans over their first 10 studio albums dating from 1987 to 2005 including two new songs ('No Threat', 'The New Maybe'). The two disc, 36 track compilation is everything a diehard Hip fan or a newcomer can want. It contains the essential radio staples such as the semi acoustic ballad about the small Ontarian town 'Bobcaygeon', the bluesy rocker 'Little Bones', the mellow 'Ahead By A Century', and the hockey tale 'Fifty-Mission Cap' to name a few. But every greatest hits has the ones everyone's heard. What makes this better to newcomers are the lesser known gems such as the title track to the 1992 hit album 'Fully Completely', the calm, soothing acoustic lullabye 'Fiddler's Green' and the mid-tempo rocker 'So Hard Done By'. This is one of the few compilations I can hardly say has flaws but the ommision of songs such as 'Pigeon Camera' and 'Thompson Girl' are felt but don't hurt it drastically. 'Yer Favorites' captures a great many of songs, moods, atmospheres and styles that showcase why The Hip have stayed on top of Canada for years and years. And considering it's not very expensive, the only way this can be pointless is if you own every one of the bands albums. Now this is what 'Best Of' albums should be like.

Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros Global A Go-Go
Joe Strummer's second of three albums with his last band The Mescaleros is a very interesting listen and unlike anything he has ever done before, even his debut with the band two years earlier. Joe showed previously with The Clash his interest in experimenting with various types of music and trying new styles, but some stuff found on Global A Go-Go would see something different and more eccentric, yet organized and comprehendable. Global A Go-Go shows best Strummer's facination and ability to play world music, as well as folk, rock and reggae, among other styles too as well as his lyrical material with subjects of events all around the world, politics and personal stories. Musically lies an array of instruments that range from guitar of all sorts, bass, bongo drums, violins, to piano, keyboards and organs. From the intriging opening bass line of Johnny Appleseed to the epic seventeen minute closer Minstrel Boy, it's one of the most diverse and exciting albums I've heard. Global A Go-Go may not be the most accesible album to get into, but once you do, you will realize what a superb and intelligent album it is, lyrically and musically.

Social Distortion Mommy's Little Monster
Social Distortion are a band still going today, but their debut goes back more than twenty years ago, 1983's Mommy's Little Monster. This album shows Social D in their rawest and most punk form musically, as there is little to no rockabilly influences present that would later be a big part of their next three albums. From the album opener, the stunning "The Creeps" to the epic closer "Moral Threat", it is essential to any fan of punk. There are no weak tracks, but there are some that really standout, aside from the album opener and closer, are the title track, "Hour of Darkness" and "Another State of Mind". Social Distortion's Mommy's Little Monster is a superb punk album; posessing excellent lyrics from frontman Mike Ness, fast and memorable guitar riffs and all of the above.

The Clash Live: From Here to Eternity
It took a while, but an official live Clash album was finally released in 1999, and, in short, it was worth the wait. Live: From Here to Eternity is comprised of songs recorded at different venues in London (Victoria Park, Music Machine, The Lyceum, Lewisham Odeon), New York City (Bonds, Shea Stadium) and Boston (The Orpheum) between 1978 and 1982. The songs are arranged based on when they were released rather than when they were played live chronilogically. Complete Control opens the album with high adrenaline and proves to be far better than the studio version; no doubt one of the albums highlights. London's Burning and What's My Name (a questionable addition) are chosen to represent the band in their early recordings circa '78 and posess a raw feel. Capitol Radio and City of the Dead are both lesser known tracks but hold up just as well as others. Guns of Brixton, Armagidion Time and Hammersmith Palais are added to show the bands hevay reggae influence, the latter performed especially good. Should I Stay... and Train in Vain show the poppier side of the band, and the latter has the most improvising musically on the album with Mick's wandering solos towards the end (lyrically would be Straight to Hell). Career Opportunities is played much slower than the original by the band past their prime in '82 and its a minor disappointment. The album's standout, the 7 minute epic Straight To Hell shows Strummer at his finest closing the album on a lasting impression. Here To Eternity is essential for a fan of The Clash and is a strong record of a mostly good selection of tracks, however one from Give Em Enough Rope wouldn't have hurt.

The Offspring The Offspring
When listening to The Offspring's self titled debut album, it is almost hard to tell that this is the same band that would make albums like Americana and Conspiracy Of One. This album sounds like no other in the band's discography, even their sophomore album Ignition. The Offspring's punk rock roots shine here and there hardly the amount of pop that would dominate later albums. The band whips through eleven songs with fast guitar riffs and raw vocals with attitiude taking cues from veteran Californian punk bands like TSOL and Agent Orange making some of their best music in songs such as Jennifer Lost The War, Beheaded, Blackball, and Tehran. The lyrics here would also be different from later work, with a more political overtone. If you want to see The Offspring as a punk band intead of their joke songs like Pretty Fly, Original Prankster and Hit That that they will sadly be remembered for by some, check out their debut album.

The Tragically Hip Road Apples
The Tragically Hip Day For Night
'Day For Night' is the follow up album to the incredibly successful 'Fully Completely'. With their past few albums, The Hip established themselves as a premier rock band in Canada. 'Day For Night' continues in similar styles as its predecessors, however the tempo is slightly slower with a very atmospheric feel, which the album cover suggests. Grace Too, the album opener, gives a first glimpse of the slightly new turn with its mid tempo and distortion surrounding as oppose to previous album openers such as Courage and Little Bones (from 'Fully Completely' and 'Road Apples' respectively). Other tracks such as Yawning or Snarling and Thugs offer the slower, weary overall feel of 'Day For Night', however this should not sound bad at all. But with The Hip there is sure to be those pounding, up tempo rock staples. An Inch An Hour, Inevabilty Of Death and Impossibilium all fill that void. The album also spawned hits such as Nautical Disaster and Scared, both obvious highlights with the latter being one of the bands best acoustic tunes. 'Day For Night' is one of the Hip's best releases and is essential in their collection of some of Canada's best rock in recent times.
The Weakerthans Fallow
The Weakerthans may have gone on to make better albums since their debut in 1997, but Fallow is still some great, unique music from the Canadian band. John K Samson's first album after leaving Propagandhi is full of his signature witty, poetic lyrics and light, radiant voice through poppy riffs and catchy, upbeat songs (Letter Of Resignation), more punky songs (Confessions Of A Futon-Revolutionist) and at times slower, mellow tunes (None of the Above) that drifts away a little from his punk rock past, but succeeds at it.

Sloan A Sides Win: Singles 1992-2005
A Sides Win is a well put together compilation of the greatest hits of Sloan, one of Canada's most well known rock bands. The album spans from the early days of Underwelmed from their first EP in 1991 to their 7th studio album with The Rest Of My Life. It also contains two previously unreleased tracks including the single All Used Up. Recomended for newer fans wanting to get a grasp of some of the bands better and more accessible work.

The Clash Sandinista!
The Clash Combat Rock
Although it doesn't rank with their first few albums in terms of quality, Combat Rock was infact the album that made them big in America and the first album of theirs to reach gold status. However, it was the beginning of the end for The Clash as soon afterwards Topper Heardon would be ejected from the band and then Mick Jones later on. 12 songs here is a huge step down from the 36 of its predecessor Sandinista! however is a lot easier to digest. Although their are only 12 songs, The Clash, being themselves, don't stick to one montonous sound or style. They maintain their traditional punk rock (little mind you) and reggae roots but also play folk and funk. Combat Rock is also best known for containing two of The Clash's most successful songs, Should I Stay or Should I Go and Rock The Casbah, both highlights. Other songs like the anthemic Know Your Rights, Strummer's chilling Straight To Hell, and Car Jamming remain some of the band's best work. Combat Rock may not be the easiest album to get into at first, but is excellent and was a milestone for the band and the last true Clash album.

Built To Spill Ancient Melodies of the Future
The only sub-par entry in the Built to Spill catalogue, Ancient Melodies of the Future seems to lack what makes all their other albums so enjoyable; the songs just aren't quite as epic, catchy or memorable. There are some bright spots however in 'Strange', 'You Are' and 'The Weather'. Not a terrible album, just average especially for the band's standards.

Soundtrack Detroit Rock City
A somewhat dissapointing soundtrack to a great movie. And it's not actually the song selection that brings this down, its the artist selection. One of the reasons why Detriot Rock City is a good movie is its classic rock soundtrack that that captures classic rock era circa 1978. But for the soundtrack they took a great many of these well known songs such as AC/DC's Highway To Hell, Def Leppard's 20th Centruy Boy, Kiss' Strutter and replaced with them with versions by Marylin Manson, Drain STH, and The Donnas. Mind you, Everclear and Pantera do a good enough job on their covers but its not enough to save this. Some of the movies best songs such as Bowie's Rebel Rebel, Thin Lizzy's Jailbreak and Halen's Runnin With The Devil redeem this but overall an average score. Fun movie though.

The Offspring Splinter
Splinter consists of twelve tracks, varying from the punk of their old days, silly pop songs of recent to even odder songs like the album closer, the 40's style When You're In Prison (one of the many pointless, joke, filler ect songs). Songs like The Noose and the very short Da Hui let you know that The Offspring still have that basic punk rock of early days and both stand as highlights on the record. But others like the extremely poppy and electronic-ish single Hit That and joke ska song The Worst Hangover Ever just add to the albums already great amount of filler . The album opens up strongly enough with Neocon, but before you know it, its over, which seems like the album itself. On the positive side, Splinter does contain some of the band's best to date, like the powerful and emotional hard rock song Race Against Myself as well The Noose. To sum it up, Splinter is among the bottom of the Offspring's discography. If the album was longer and had less filler then maybe that wouldn't be.

The Clash Cut The Crap
This is not The Clash. After some major conflicts between the band following the release of Combat Rock the group started to deteriorate, resulting in the loss of guitarist Mick Jones and drummer Topper Headon. Cut The Crap would be the bands final album or rather the first and last of the new reformed Clash. Cut The Crap is watered down with no real energy the band was known for and Mick's absence is felt in the song writing department. The sound is way over produced and the excessive use of electronics and drum machines makes for a monotonous disco-punk sound, and the frequent use of the crowd chanting chorus' doesn't help either. However, there is a gem here in This Is England, the last great Clash song. Three Card Trick is listenable as well, but Cut The Crap is only for die hard collectors; a somewhat sad ending to one of the best bands there ever was.
