Funebre Cranial Torment |
Although it is Children of the Scorn that often receives accolades from so-called aficionados of death metal scene, this listener believes that Funebre captured its spirit and essence on the sadly overlooked demo, Cranial Torment. Within thirty seconds of the opening title track, the stage is set and the mood is established. Trolls looking for firewood in the Finnish highlands in 1270 AD come across untrue travelers, who bring tales of Christianity and sex after marriage. The trolls, understandably furious, engage in horrendous yet noble acts of cranial torment on the unsuspecting travelers who wish to shove their pathetic ways down the trolls' throats. This is an image frequently conjured up by this demo every time it is placed in the cassette player. All throughout Cranial Torment we are told vivid tales of morbidity and hopeless death, nihilism meets Pagan rebirth in Hell. The vocals are brilliant, reminiscent of cold warriors chanting for the blood of virgin whores. Many death metal is like an American burger - fine every now and then but it will cause diabetes and death. The coldness and hopeless despair charged by brutal spirits that is found here within these tracks is closer to a rare steak, primitive and forcing us to confront our animalistic roots. |

It is this demo in which Overkill embody the spirit of metal. Never since have they sounded so youthful, enthusiastic, full of fire and gritty passion. Blitz screeches like fuck, with galloping guitar reminiscent of the finest Maiden and Priest tracks, and not to mention the bass has a thumping fuck sound. Raw as it should be. Recorded the way good is. Check it out. |
