Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique |
Interviewer: Nathanael Hornblower, you've been working with the Beasties for the last three years. What can you tell us about their new record, "Paul's Boutique"? Nathanael Hornblower: Vell, I can tell you that it has been a remarkable experience. Ze boys have brought a whole new skill set to zis record. I have verked vith many artists, and none have impressed me like ze Beastie Boys have. Interviewer: Can you elaborate? Nathanael Hornblower: Zey are fragmented, allusive, aggressive, and inspired. Zey dredge all of musical history for samples (zey bite from John Williams, ze Beatles, and Idris Muhammad, for Gott's sake!), namedrop scientists, writers (after all, zey got more rhymes zan JDs got Salingers), and buy drinks from Orange Julius. Zis is a postmodern crisis of consciousness, a dick-measuring contest von by pop-culture knowledge, a rap battle fought vith a TV Guide in one hand and a syllabus in ze other. Fuck concepts, fuck tradition, zis is innovation. Interviewer: Well...um...we're certainly looking forward to it. Nathanael Hornblower: Yes, ve are looking forward to the release. I hope all ze Swiss girls come to ze party. |

When I was 14, I was primarily listening to Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Boston. There's nothing really wrong with these bands, but they all sort of bely tendency toward "Dad-Rock", a tendency that came from...well, my dad. This album changed that. From the opening crash of the cymbals in "Bone Machine", I knew I was listening to something Dad would never get into. This album single-handedly started me down the path to music nerd-dom. Fuck you, Dad. |

Wire Pink Flag |
A conversation with my friend Austin. Me: Dude, so have you heard Wire? Austin: No, what's it like? Me: So, it's punk, but it's not punk. It's like post-punk before post-punk was a thing. Wikipedia calls it art-punk. I don't really know how to describe it. Like, short, weird, catchy-as-hell melodic punk tunes. You've just got to listen to it. Austin: ... |

Weezer Pinkerton |
I'm embarrassed to like this album. It's ugly, creepy, and frequently despicable. This is an album for dudes who believe in "The Friend Zone". I mean, Christ, how am I supposed to explain a song like "Across the Sea"? It's an album that begs you to hate it, but I suppose that's the point. How often do we get to hear something that yells at the listener, with capital-H honesty, "I'm beyond fucked-up, lonely, and angry, but so are you, or you wouldn't be listening to this again at 1 AM on a Wednesday night. Let's pretend we're 15, put on Pinkerton, and dance the rage away." |
