This is a good example of metalcore done wrong. This album is very bland, very boring, and below average metalcore. Retribution was a step in the right direction but I don't know what happened with this. Shadows Fall need to look at their metalcore brethren like Oh, Sleeper, Underoath, and August Burns Red and realize they need to step their game up about 5 notches.

Another great album by a great band so a great is what this album shall receive. Although some may complain at the movement to a more "mainstream" sound due to more prominent clean vocals, I feel it does not affect the total outcome of the album. The clean choruses actually do nothing but help the songs. There is still a big use of the trash riffs that they are known for, so the band isn't changing too much. If anything it's a gradual change, and in my opinion it's for the better.

I still haven't decided if I like this or Retribution more as an album, but the band now seems comfortable and confident in their songwriting, which they manage to keep varied without sounding scattered. This album also displays the best vocal performance the band has done.

This is Shadows Fall's best album to date...As of now my favorite song is Save Your Soul.

Shadows Fall have returned, and not much has changed since 2009's Retribution. The melodies and thrash riffs are still present, and the production is fantastic due to Adam D's contributions. Still though, the band is moving further and further into commercial territory with vocalist Brian Fair's prominent usage of clean vocals combined with his signature bark, which might continue to alienate listeners.
