After a breakup period of six years, seminal brutal death metal outfit Suffocation reformed with Souls To Deny, which also welcomes drummer Mike Smith back to the fold. Predictably, he does extremely well here in his typically style. The songwriting here is a couple of leagues below that of Effigy Of The Forgotten or Breeding The Spawn, but it's solid throughout the first half and turns up a notch in the second half, ending on a massive haymaker combo of "Immortally Condemned" and "Tomes Of Acrimony". The style is their mix of brutal death and technical death metal, but with much less of the slam death metal they incorporated on earlier works and only isolated sections of groove. Though it isn't anywhere near their material from the 90's, Souls To Deny is still a good brutal death metal album and a must-listen for fans of Suffocation.
