A very pretty record from Elliott Smith, perhaps his prettiest and most accessible material with a strong 60's power pop influence that's much welcome.

With Roman Candle, Either/Or, and Elliott Smith, Smith demonstrated his mastery of soulful stripped-down pieces, but with Figure 8 we see him growing as a musician. While the songwriting remains very much Elliott Smith-esque, the vivacious energy of the music presents an utter disparity from the rest of Smith's albums. Elliott's sincerity and sadness still radiate from his fifth full-length record, but you can't help but feel like the light is going to break through.

The saddest album I have ever heard, but also one of the most beautiful. Figure 8 expands on the baroque pop sound explored on XO and the results are brilliant. Can't Make a Sound is particularly moving.

This is probably Elliott's most popular album, but popularity aside, I think that this is one of his best. One thing that I love about this album is it feels like a complete album, not just a group of songs that were recorded and put together onto a CD. This album shows his dark, depressing side with songs like Everything Means Nothing To Me and Everything Reminds Me Of Her, and it also shows his more upbeat side with songs like L.A. and Stupidity Tries. This album is truely amazing and will definitely leave some sort of impact on every listener.

Man, this was disappointing. It's not that this album is bad?it's not. However, compared to his other projects, this is not even in the same realm of excellence. Roman Candle and Either/Or are acoustic masterpieces, and the thin, fragile vocals fit perfectly together with the spiderwebby guitar work. Here, as Smith expands his sonic palette and pop tendencies, the weight of his storytelling and the cohesion of his album structure suffer greatly.

"Figure 8" is the definitive work of Elliott Smith's career. I will explain why: From his acoustic beginning, to his own production in all the instruments like in "Either/Or", he was creating his identity until arriving at a point where he got together everything that he launched sublimely, creating thus a great masterpiece. Along with a band to support their genius, in addition to building perfect songs, he fit the songs perfectly into the album, as in the case of the passage from "Everything Reminds Me of Her" to "LA".
