What a weird, haphazard relationship St. Vincent shares with her music. She has the impulses of lesser artists, extending song lengths past their logical stopping points (check out that title track; there's like three false endings) but with the skill of some major players, some of which wouldn't even touch half of what makes up Strange Mercy. Annie Clark has built her own ballpark in a genre that usually supports the minor leagues, and for the time being seems to be only playing against herself. Not quite a home run, Strange Mercy suggests that Clark's next step up to the plate will gift us the classic we're already itching to praise.

I really don't care for a lot of this type of poppy stuff, and I also wasn't too huge on Actor, I thought it was 'ok'. This however is a huge step up for Annie Clark. It keeps all the great things about Actor like the charm and the fun melodies but makes the actual music a lot more varied and interesting. It gets a little stranger and a tad darker than where her work went before, and the result is an incredibly fun artsy pop album with plenty of great compositions and melodies. Only huge problem is when its not incredibly fun its incredibly boring. Inconsistency with these tracks is kinda killing me, I love some of them but just wanna turn some of them off. Oh but her lyrics on here are truly awesome. This style still won't ever be my favorite, but Clark has finally made something I enjoy, most of the time. I won't go back to this in full often, simply because a lot of it just doesn't appeal to me completely, but the best stuff on here is incredibly catchy and bright. Just wish it had more than just 3 or 4 tracks of that.

A very lovable and unique indie-pop album with a definitive avant-garde edge. This album is definitely out there, no doubt. It serves up dreamy pop melodies (Sweet Mercy), buzzy, even spastic solos (Northern Lights), eerie modified vocals not unlike something you would hear from The Knife (Cheerleader), quirky electronics (Surgeon), and Danny Elfman-style orchestral moments (Cruel), sometimes all over the course of one song. But the album is still entirely approachable and human thanks to Annie Clark's velvety vocals and tons of kickass melodies that anchor all of the oddities. Easily one of the most infectious and endearing albums of the year.

More personal, yet her most layered, buried, and fuzzed-out effort yet. The harmony on most songs is so much more gratifying than the already satisfying music she's created so far, and her lyric phrasing is a bit more unique this time around.
