Twelve re-recordings of punk rock classics re-worked with a brand new, semi-acoustic take...it sounds like a train wreck at first, to be honest. Well, in short, it kicks ass. Damnesia makes use of the texture of acoustic guitars coupled with Derek Grant's minimalistic drumming, while Matt Skiba's more matured, emotionally executed vocals are noticeably stronger than that of This Addiciton (though I'm not sure whether the same could be said for Dan Andriano). While the three brand new tracks may not be eye-catchers at first, they are actually extremely enjoyable, particularly the band's cover of "I Held Her In My Arms" by the Violent Femmes. In addition, the electric instrumentation, most notably the electric guitar parts featured on "Mercy Me" and "Radio", provide yet another layer of texture to the album in order to further increase what is already quite a fresh sound. In conclusion, Damnesia will surely be a hit for Alkaline Trio fans, who will likely enjoy these particularly interesting re-recordings of some of the band's very best works, while others who are only just discovering the Trio will surely be intrigued (at the very least) by the record.

Fun acoustic re-works of some of the Alkaline Trio's most beloved tracks. The instrumentation is tasteful, the performances are wonderful, and the production is never overblown. This music is, for the most part, very simple, and it doesn't all hit the mark, but there's lots of great stuff ("This Could Be Love," "Private Eye," "You've Got So Far to Go").
