You won't find anything on here to rival the catchiness of 'Atlas' or the kind of concrete jungle vibe of 'Leyendecker'. And there's certainly nothing on here to topple the greatest moment in music ever; you know, THAT part in 'Tonto'. What you will find however are three band members, all masters in their respective fields, shedding some of the accessibility of their debut album and combining it with the slow progression of their early EPs. A little less technical, (which results in the album having a little more warmth to it) and a little more methodical, Gloss Drop is a worthy follow up. It's just not as energetic as I want it to be. It's a lot more cohesive than Mirrored though, but that's really only because it lacks any true defining moment, nothing really sticks its neck out to be noticed. Which sadly, does hold the album back

A smart and sensible follow-up considering the circumstances, where technicality isn't lost, and neither is the talent. This different Battles doesn't live within the shadow of its predecessor; it inverts Mirrored, twisting the intent of both pop and prog-rock genre affectations until they become both formless and air-tight. What's left often feels aloof, but Gloss Drop is more nuanced than its predecessor. Awe comes from the full effect of any given song, or run of them (once "Wall Streeet" locks down around :39, shit gets real for a while). Sit down and give Gloss Drop its intended cinematic listen and you might find an album worthy of Mirrored-size scrutiny. Or a really great pop album. Still debating.

Two minutes longer than Mirrored, when it feels 20 minutes shorter. Mirrored, while technically impressive, was overly repetitive and often pretty boring. Gloss Drop seems like it's from a different band - technical without testing my patience and catchy without feeling "sugary" (despite the album cover). I'd go as far as to call this THE Summer album of 2011.

The sounds. The fucking sounds on this record. I have no idea what setting or pre-recorded material Ian loaded onto his keyboards, but whatever they were it sounds so fucking fantastic. Not only that, but this record has some of the most prominent and tastey sounding bass playing I have ever heard. The way the riffs groove in and out of your brain while bizarrely crunchy synth work blasts away is simply awe-inspiring. Save for a few moments that lack the extra oomph ("Futura", "Wall Street" and "Toddler"), this album is pure greatness. Favored tracks: "Ice Cream", "Inchworm", "My Machines", "Sweetie & Shag", "Rolls Bayce" and "Sundome"

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I dont know what i was thinking when i gave it a 4.5. This album is perfect. It's daring, it's different, and it's catchy as fuck.

Eccentricity and monotony coalesce perfectly to create one hell of a boring, at times downright annoying album. The only thing which saves the album from a lower rating is the technical proficiency of the bassist and drummer; they keep things interesting from time to time.

See Deviant's sound-off because it sums this up perfectly, at least in my opinion. Atlas and Tonto were arguably the two best tracks on Mirrored and they just aren't matched on Gloss Drop... however, this record is still a lot of fun, as you'd expect from a band like Battles.
