hEy KiD, EveR HeRD oF tHe SmIThS? Ye it's jangly indie pop, but it's especially, unabashedly, typically British. From the football reference as the album title to the Thatcher comments sprinkling the whole record, it's just very very rosbif. Whether or not the leftist approach pleases you or not, the tunes are solid enough for the politics not to be the record's major discussion point - at least I hope so. So yeah, it's tuneful, but without never really surpassing the status of "nice 80s jangle", paling next to that era's greats. And FYI: bassist Norman Cook later became Fatboy Slim. Now that's fucking cool.

Fun serviceable UK 80s rock you've heard plenty of. If you fancy this style and period, then this band and album should already be familiar to you. And if you don't, you can still probably find a few decent songs here that are sure to fill your playlists of the likes of the Smiths, Belle and Sebastian, Oasis and Stone Roses or whatever.

Sunny-faced societal grudges and xtra-effortless singalong jangly pep give them a dorky+fervid edge against the ambiguous R.E.M.s and sad-sack-poetry Smiths of the world, expressions of rich vs. poor dilemmas and attempts at inciting upheavals are more articulate and venomous than most anarcho-punx can muster, as are the two impassioned-piano-balladry tracks (one of which is a "Lean On Me" cover of all things). And nearly 30 years later, the grouses still hold up, some have even seemed to gain significance - take the man that just can't choose a side; who "strokes his twenty beards" and "only drinks real ale".
