Manufactured-quirk gothic schmaltz americana bullshit. A couple agreeable tunes, but it's like, ok, we get it, you like Bukowski. So fucking obvious in its mood, no wonder alternative kids ate it up.

The rusty and raucous sound of Swordfishtrombones makes it one of the most singular listening I've ever had. There is no artist who can claim he has a similar musical approach. Furthermore, Tom Waits isn't just a genius storyteller, only him can create such a surrealistic atmosphere in his stories and unbelievable characters. Swordfishtrombones is disconcerting, nervous, unique.

With Swordfishtrombones, Tom Waits ends his "bar pillar and pseudo-jazz" era. Songs are shorter, lyrics are more cryptic and the rich sax/piano/guitar instrumentations that rhythmed his previous records are now replaced by a tornado of brasses. Musically, this draws near Waits' voice: it's raucous and metallic shit that moans its way to the most bizarre territories of cabaret music, midway between Beefheart and Brecht and Weill. Cabaret music never was my cuppa, but while I do find of the instrumentals to be meandering a tad too much, I dig this. Not vibin' hard, but diggin'.

With this album I'm definitely getting more of an "...Interesting..." feeling than the "Wow, this is confusingly beautiful" feeling that I got with Rain Dogs. A solid album; definitely not for everybody, but nonetheless impressive. 3.8/5
