Debut EP that's also pre-transition into unrelentingly assaultive troglodytic-steel mill-industrial. They actually had (dare I say) some bounce, Gira's intimidation was turning up on the lyric sheet more than in his vocal performance, and it's generally cast from more of a usual dark-post-punk mold. The Swans-spore was clearly laid: bass plod, guitar-for-dissonance, other stuff-for-dissonance, derangement-basement motif, etc.

Before Swans was the brutal, uncompromising noise rock band they'd become in the mid-80's, they were a band heavily influenced by the no wave scene and bassy post-punk in general. This, their debut EP, shows Swans in a state that few other songs made by the band in the 80's can replicate. There is little to no brutality on display here, Michael Gira's vocals are surely not as disgusting and disturbing as they would eventually become, and there isn't much in the way of industrial sounds either. That said, it is still Swans, which of course means excellently crafted, repetitive song structures and hateful, scathing lyrics. The bass on the record is quite fantastic, and the sparse, looping guitar works well. In all, an ominous and intriguing start from one of the darkest bands in existence.

The original Swans: melody, decent production, and less anger are present here. Seems interesting considering what was to come.
