Coming right out of nowhere with its retro kitsch appeal Plastic Beach doesn't immediately hit as hard as Demon Days did, but with huge dollops of dirty 80's synth and addictive underlying bass Plastic Beach will slowly work its magic on you. Destined to be an underrated album of the year

Sometimes at night, I believe I will spend my hours dancing on my couch in tighty whities listening to this album. That's how silly, fun, and explosive it is.

The band takes more of an influence cue from De La Soul this time around, instead of the dark, weird world that was Demon Days the virtual group opens up to the lighter side of things, and it manages to be an upbeat catchy listen with tons of tunes that'll be stuck in your head for days.

A slightly boring album from a band that is clearly capable of making great albums. Too many guest spots and not enough infectious grooves or melodies to really have any staying power whatsoever. That said, it does have its moments in Empire Ants, Superfast Jellyfish, and To Binge.

Sloppy, rough, and abstract, Plastic Beach comes thundering down from the hype sky. (Non-)concept cartoon band Gorillaz' recent effort is muddled and unfocused at times, and at others, fun and creative. Influences hail from genres such as dub, electronic, alternative rock, punk, and hip-hop. However, the album succeeds best with Albarn heading the vocals. The second half of the album is much better than the first. Standout tracks are "Rhinestone Eyes," "Some Kind of Nature," "Superfast Jellyfish" and "On Melancholy Hill," but needless filler, and boring tracks limit this album's awesome upside.

Gorillaz finally got crushed under the weight of it's guest stars. The album lacks cohesion and suffers from mediocrity. I miss the good old fun, Gorillaz was designed as an escape where Damon can hide behind the cartoon band, but it seems like after two albums, this has become a full-fledged gig. Rather than try out whatever he couldn't do as a group, he's just created another one. But this time, they've got bloated members like Lou Reed.

There's something intangible linking these songs together and with the exception of a couple, they're all individually brilliant for seemingly unrelated reasons. My only real disappointment was how excited I was about Sweepstakes (Mos Def/Hypnotic Brass Ensemble) on paper, but it turned out to be one of the weaker tracks.

The gorillaz are consistently wierd as well as unique and undeniably catchy. Really there is no band that sounds and feels like the gorillaz. Plastic Beach continues this trend, it has a guest artist on practically every song and it keeps everything fresh and new while still holding the gorillaz style that makes them so liked among their fanbase.

interesting. for me, the record doesn't really flow - it tends to peak and then rapidly decrease in quality. It's good he's removed the "cartoon band" persona though; this is serious music, and in my opinion "gorillaz" should now be seen as a musical collective led by Damon Albarn.
However - the album is still a let down.

The diversity present on Plastic Beach, combined with its cohesiveness, makes for a ridiculously infectious album that is undoubtedly the greatest achievement in the Gorillaz catalog. With nary a weak moment, Plastic Beach flows from start to finish delivering one catchy beat after another along with a series of interesting rhythyms.

While it doesn't hit you directly with impactful tunes like previous efforts, this grower of a Gorillaz album swirls and swoons to the winds of the beach, with groovy beats and psychadelia. "Empire Ants" is beautiful and could be considered in the upper echelon of Gorillaz songs. Oh and cartoons.

cool album. There was a review that seemed to argue the Gorillaz are less defined because of all the guest vocals.....but i think it sort of builds a community for their own 'plastic beach' world
empire ants and rhinestone eyes are just dope tracks....but I question whether I can keep listening to the whole album over and over

I knew that the gorillaz wouldnt come out with a total fail,, even if it is in this crisis mode that it is. I don"t understand why they had so many featured guests on the album... they couldve done fine with just being the gorillaz alone. Really digging "rhinestone eyes"

You know this happens every time. Every new phase spoils me. It takes a really long time to get used to the changes, and then once I do, it's all about whatever phase it's in now. All other Gorillaz is ruined for me until this phase is over, more than likely. Doesn't help that it's a great summer album.

Predictably crazy and jagged around the edges, with just the kind of brilliant instrumentation and guest stars you'd expect Albarn to cook up. But for all its craftsmanship it's still a muddled, jumbled mess of an album, one more in love with the idea itself than in the songs, which too often meander about with no real meaning, aim, or (most importantly) hooks. Bring Blur back please.

This album is absolutely incredible. What seemingly came out of nowhere could turn into one of my favorite albums this year. Not quite on par with Demon Days but still an excellent listen with some great guest stars. "White Flag" is a favorite.
