Mike Patton has become one of modern music's most notorious cult figures, seemingly for little more than making at least three times as much music as everyone else, no matter how terrible most of it is (see also: Merzbow). Patton does at least have one thing going for him, though - he was part of the band that made Angel Dust. Hard rock generally doesn't have the greatest expressive range, but the depiction of sheer insanity here is incredible. Sure, it's helped by the fact that the band aren't even close to being on the same page (Patton and the keyboard player want to be spooky, the bassist and drummer want to be funky, and the guitarist just wants to make as much filthy noise as possible), but even so, songs like "Everything's Ruined", "Land Of Sunshine", and "Smaller And Smaller" are powerful, gritty, ugly snapshots of a mind (both collective and individual) being torn apart. Beautiful, in an insane sort of way. 3 Bumps | Bump

Unbelievable. I remember listening this album in high school and feeling like I was possessed. The other half of the time, it scared the crap out of me. Seeing the song Caffeine performed on MTV in the early 90s was unbelievable. The band just seemed so disturbing, and the audience just stood around captivated and confused. Lots of depth to this album, it grows on you, it has a wide variety of different types of songs, and it just moves you. Everything you need for a classic. 1 Bumps | Bump

Possibly the best metal album of the 90s (only Pantera could offer any serious competition in that regard), Angel Dust is a triumph of randomness: a combination of sarcasm, every genre you could think of, and Mike Patton's astonishing vocal range into one idiosyncratic whole. Choosing highlights would be impossible: from Patton's sudden operatic tenor on "Land of Sunshine" to the Chinese-sounding instrumentation of "A Small Victory" to the all out metal assault of "Crack Hitler" and "Jizzlobber," the entire package is flawless. Out of the countless albums Patton has lent his voice to, this is unquestionably at the top of the heap. Funky bass, riffy guitars, frenzied keyboards, killer drumming, and off-the-wall vocals and lyrics make this an album for the ages. 1 Bumps | Bump

The band is all over the map no doubt. Gothic keyboards, Pop and slap bass, and vocals that change within a second. But the glue that holds it all together is this fact: this band had talent, and knew how to use it. 1 Bumps | Bump

The combination of styles and sounds heard on this album shouldn't work, but for some reason they do, and it sounds fantastic. This album is weird, loud, OTT and unique, and I can't find much to fault about it. Bump
