3.5 great | FamousAtticus | October 26th 20 | "This Addiction" grew on me. At first I was disappointed by this release. Not that I hated it, I just expected more from the Trio. As time passed, I gave it more listens and fell in lust with it. It really is a great release. Lyrics are on point, arrangement and production is solid. I still don't care for "Pissing Vinegar" (think its one of Matt's worst songs) but the other tracks carry that one weak spot on their backs. My favorite tracks (in no order) off the album are: The American Scream, Lead Poisoning (trumpets!), Dead On The Floor, Fine, This Addiction and Draculina.

3.0 good | JWT155 | November 27th 10 | Alkaline Trio’s 7th LP, This Addiction, is a continuation of their decline into very generic mainstream rock. The album has some catchy tunes but overall is very forgettable and sadly points towards the end of quality material from the band.

2.0 poor | punkrockaddicted | June 12th 10 | The moment I started listening to this album, I was quite disappointed.
Besides, Piss and vinegar is a song from Against Me!'s New Wave. Coincidence or plagium???
Seriously, I don't like the songs in this cd a bit. I don't know why so many people like it so much. This is a fail.

3.0 good | zen5729 | February 26th 10 | This Addiction is a bit too homogeneous to be considered a real triumph, but it's still a palate-pleasing performance from these pop-punk purveyors. If you're compiling a soundtrack for your Warped Tour road trip, a catchy jam or two from this disc would fit in comfortably, but after thirteen tracks, it wears a little thin as a whole. Matt Skiba's trademark dark but upbeat ruminations shouldn't disappoint the Alkaline Trio faithful.

3.5 great | eatthemeek | February 24th 10 | The Alkaline Trio will forever be one of my all time favorite punk (ish) bands. But this is almost 100% due to their pre-Good Mourning career. Not to say that they haven't produced good songs on their more recent albums...but they have just not been the same since . To me going back to their "punk roots" for This Addiction sort of sounds like they threw Crimson & Agony and Irony in a pot, and sprinkled some "punk" on top. But even so they will always have a special place in my heart!

2.5 average | bobafe6604 | February 21st 10 | Although still better than most, "This Addiction" is just more 'Trio -- essentially the same shit that these guys have put out, except this time less-catchy and memorable. This is where the whole 'punk rock' aesthetic comes back to bite you, when the 'tried-and-true' formula gives way to 'no new ideas' and 'stale'/'boring' songwriting. AK3 will always be known for their lyrical content and singing prowess, and thankfully that remains intact on this record. Also, the drumming and bass shine while the lame guitar work takes backstage - yet again. The production is clean and tight but can not save what essentially has been done better before by the same band. Sorry guys - this is a fan-only release.

3.5 great | LMP21 | February 2nd 10 | www.lexingtonmusicpress.com - Alkaline Trio have come quite a way since Goddamnit. With every passing record, the band has moved further away from their roots to a more radio friendly sound. Now, seven albums in, the band has decided to go back in time. While This Addiction is like the recent Agony And Irony in some cases, it also feels a lot more like the band's earlier work. Songs like “Lead Poisoning” and “The American Scream” may just be enough to restore the love of long time fans. After all, it's hard to deny the catchy rhythms and honest lyrics this installment has to offer. The title track easily becomes stuck in your head after just one listen, and “Off The Map” brings to mind the days of “Fuck You Aurora” and “Maybe I'll Catch Fire”. “Draculina” would of done well on the soundtrack of Jennifer's Body, while “Piss And Vinegar” showcases the attitude and song writing that made this band famous. This isn't to say there aren't disappointments along this ride. The band could do better if they got rid of the synths (“Eating Me Alive”) and kept the beats up at all times (“Dead On The Floor”), but these really are minor flaws in an otherwise enjoyable experience. Think of this album as a culmination of every sound Alkaline Trio has experimented with over their fifteen years as a band. This Addiction may not be the spectacular hit their debut was, but it sure as hell beats the pants off such past releases as Crimson and Good Mourning. (www.epitaph.com)
