It's astonishing that Nick Drake was able to make an album like Five Leaves Left when he was barely twenty years old. There's nothing youthful about this album at all. Rather, it sounds like a very old man thinking back on his youth with terrible regret. The album is often compared to Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, but it lacks that album's intensity and yearning; Drake's music has gone beyond both moods into quiet, wistful resignation. Five Leaves Left aches with loss, and when I listen to it I get the sense that Drake's death at 26 was of a kind of psychic old age-a fatal antidepressant overdose that signified the simple exhaustion of his old, defeated soul.

It's hard to choose what Nick Drake's opus is. It's always between "Five Leaves Left" and "Pink Moon", but they are both so close, it's hard to pick a favorite. Since I've been listening to Drake, I have gone back and forth between having this at a 5, and "Pink Moon" at a 5. Currently, "Five Leaves Left", is my favorite from Drake, and my favorite folk record of all time. While "Pink Moon" is the more haunting and emotional experience, "Five Leaves Left" features Nick's true genius; the sophistication of arrangements, the smooth and beautiful vocal melodies, the lack of a bad track. Highlights include the dazzling "River Man", the gorgeous "Cello Song", the epic "Three Hours", and the morning ballad "Saturday Sun". This is a perfect album in my eyes, and it features Drake at his most controlled. "Pink Moon" rivals this, but cannot edge this out. Easily my favorite folk album, and easily light years ahead of it?s time.

I suspect this is probably my favourite Nick Drake album. Although Pink Moon runs it close. It's very difficult to pin down the attributes of a genius but this man certainly had many of them. It's a shame he never knew the admiration that future generations would heap on his work.

Although most consider Pink Moon to be Nick Drake's magnum opus, Five Leaves Left improves upon everything his original album had to offer. The string melodies and distant piano keys all tie together to create one hell of a sound-scape.

Ahead of its time, delicate and an outright powerful record, Nick Drake surrounds his quaint fingerpicking with piano tinkering and gorgeously arranged sections that enhance the music that much further. Songs such as River Man and Day Is Done will haunt you for many moons to pass. As the vocals linger and sting with such conviction and emotion, you cannot help but wonder exactly how this phenomenal performer went so unnoticed in life.
