I would say that my two favorite, almost mutually exclusive, characteristics in an album or band would be 1. innovative and 2. raw. You can't really have both in the same place. Mixing Radiohead's Kid A and Modest Mouse's The Lonesome Crowded West would be like mixing ice cream with shitaki mushrooms: awkward. This album is mostly the second but it is, at times, innovative. Like, for example, the intro of "Y Control." Listen to it. Nick Zinner really knows how to use his guitar to his benifit. The screeching of "Tick" and the bleeps in "Rich" are very impressive. However, the thrill doesn't last long. At only 37 minutes, this album flies by.
Ah, my favorite indie album [so far]. As soon as I picked this up in the stores and listened to it; I couldn't stop. I cannot find one bad song on this album, and that's saying something for anyone who knows me. This album should be heard by all rock fans; any type of rock. Each track leaves you wanting more, and leaves you singing..or sometimes screaming along. One of my favorite albums.
