Really great writing and amazing production. Like damn, that guitar, really an album i can relate with. Clearly a new favorite even if its an one hit wonder band 4,6/5

A punk version of stripped folk. It sometimes sound like 2000s avant-folk, don't know if the band's paternity is recognized (or not). Anyway, this is voluntarily amateur, and I bet this aspect had at least some influence on the indie scene. All tracks aren't all on the same level though, some being bombastic jams ("Blister in the Sun", "Kiss Off", "Prove My Love"), others being ok and kinda dreary. That's what I thought upon my first listen. During the second one, I was more hooked. Gotta spend more time with this and maybe I'll end up shouting all lyrics with teenage angst. Maybe.

I came to this after hearing the astounding Hallowed Ground. By comparison, this is dull and dreary. Limp and at times outright annoying acoustic fare.

If there were ever a soundtrack to being a horny, angsty, pissed off, stoned teenager, this record would be it. Musically, it's full of addicting bass, sparse drumming and guitars, and an emotional vocal performance. It's generally in the style of folk punk, which works excellently as the band channels both the youthful passion of punk and the beautiful wisdom of folk. The lyrics are probably the best part about the whole record, and I say this as someone who doesn't put a massive amount of stock into lyrics. They are humorous, nostalgic, witty, and yet tantalizingly simple. "I'm high as a kite, and I just might, stop to check you out" or "Why can't I get just one screw? Believe me, I'd know what to do, but something won't let me make love to you." So many bands since 1983 that write about teenage angst and experiences secretly wish they could write lyrics that good. What they don't understand is that Violent Femmes caught lightning in a bottle with this record, one that influenced several genres en route to becoming an undeniable cult classic.

This is so great. Violent Femmes are so quirky. They have an awesomesound made of rockabilly, folk and punk. True orginals!

Violent Femmes' debut album has some great songs, and some even better individual moments ("oh my my my my my mo my mum..."), and I really have a lot of affection for the album. The tunes are catchy as hell, with the exception of the rather dreary "Confessions", and the band achieves some remarkable power slamming on acoustic instruments. After a few songs, though, it starts to get repetitive, and it's just too uneven to be a really great album.

A low key, college rock band with an interesting sound. If you can get past the whiny vocal delivery coupled with that peculiar voice the singer has, you can sit back and enjoy the simple, folky instrumentation in the songs.
