After spending some quality time with the album today, I've changed my mind a bit. Through-and-through it doesn't touch the mid-90's stuff, but Coaster is definitely the best record NOFX has done since Pump Up The Valuum. While it's their most mid-tempo, poppy outing yet, the songs are all overwhelmingly good, minus a few clunkers ("Creeping Out Sara", "The Quitter"). "Eddie, Bruce & Paul" might just be the best song the band has done since the SLATFATS days (musically, not counting The Decline), the variety of music is excellent, and the songwriting is what Wolves In Wolves' Clothing and War On Errorism should have been. The true star of the record is El Hefe, who proves his name by laying down some REALLY excellent solos and leads all over the place and it's about time Fat Mike let his skills really shine. It's no Punk In Drublic or SLATFATS, but Coaster is a more than worthy addition to NOFX's catalogue.

NoFX being NoFX: what else can I want? Here we can enjoy the songs about politics (we called it America), religions (blasphemy, best god in show), casualities (the quitter). Brilliant lyrics! Acid, humorous, such a great experience. It's so fuckin' good see that what he's singing's so fuckin close to me, to my thoughts about the subjects. I do have to exalt the work of Smelly: damn, what a drummer! The Best! NoFX since 1998 in my life and playlist until forever.

There are a couple of great tracks-- "Eddie, Bruce, and Paul," which is one of the best songs I've heard by the band, and "I Am an Alcoholic," a fun, chilled-out number with some fantastic female vocals and an equally fantastic trumpet solo-- but by-and-large Coaster ranges from mediocre to bad. The aforementioned great songs save this record from the scrap heap, as does the good production.

While I was listening to the record for the first time, My Orphan Year came on and after hearing the first line I paid attention to every single word of the song. IMO this is one of NOFX's most brilliant songs. It's very open and emotional.
The other stand out tracks are Eddie, Bruce and Paul and Best God in Show. Apart from these three songs nothing really stood out for me which is why I only gave the record a 3/5.
