like the cover a dichotomy between sunny bangers and sloggy midgoods. still weballergy, san sebastian, and wolf & raven are some of the best tracks theyve ever done and in existence

Some complain that power metal lacks depth,
however this music proves that the genre can
be sophisticaded, and still emotionally
powerful and catchy.
Probably Sonata's most progressive album of
the classic era, this will keep you in a
constant state of bliss, which is what this
kind of metal is about, rather than being
brutal.

Sonata Arctica take the necessary steps to create a proper follow-up in Silence, which has a few breathtaking numbers to really pull its listeners in. This is what can best be described as a charismatically characteristic album, representing the best of a symphonic/power metal band. Inherent shortcomings are a given, but try telling that to a fan of said genres when the music is this catchy and effective.

This album is much better than their debut Ecliptica. The synthesizers feel better placed,
even if they do sound a bit cheesy still. Kakko's vocals fit the songs more for the most
part. The production has improved. Their songwriting has some form of variation now, whereas
with the first album every song felt structured together like bricks. The problem still
remains with the cheesiness. The keyboards at times feel awkwardly placed, the voice samples
at the beginning of one song just seems totally out of place for the genre, and there are
too many sickeningly sweet ballads. I would give this a 3.5 for sure if they worked those
things out. Lastly, this thing is way too long. It does not really deserve a length over 40
minutes, but they drag the affair out to over an hour.
