This whole album makes no sense, and for several reasons. The songwriting seems to have no sense of direction whatsoever, randomly hopping back and forth between a crawling pace and blasting away at warp speed. Solos fly in and out seemingly whenever they want, and it's tough to follow everything happening with such a murky production job. The atmosphere here is oppressive and overwhelming in a good way, but it turns sour at certain points because of the aimless songwriting. The songs also jarringly just stop out of nowhere, and it all just feels like there's very little control here. With two of these guys also performing in Portal, who are masters at making sure such insane songwriting doesn't go off the rails, you'd think those skills would've translated here. Blight Upon Martyred Sentience has some really great moments during the first half of the record that keep things interesting, and the atmosphere is truly impressive in these moments. Still, it could've been so much better had the songwriting just been tightened up a few screws. Perhaps this could end up being a grower, but for now it's just a bit disappointing.
